Two Sri Lankans Arrested At Katunayake Air Port With Rs.Millions Worth Foreign Currency

The Air Port Custom Officers have arrested two Sri Lankans at the Katunayake Bandaranaike International Air Port early this morning who attempted to leave the country to Sinagpore carrying Rs.7.18 million worth foreign currency  .

Euros,US Dollars and Swiss Francs were found in their pocession according to the Custom Officers.

The Air Port Custom Officers are conducting further investigations on the incident.

TNA Parliamentary Group Has Unanimously Approved A Proposal Stating The Opposition Leader Post Should Handover To TNA Leader

The Tamil National Alliance(TNA) has today(01)  unanimously approved a proposal stating the Opposition Leader Post of the Parliament should be handedover to the leader of TNA ,R Sambanshan.The Parliamentary Group of TNA meet at the Parliament has approved the said proposal.

As the section of  main party belonging to the opposition UPFA ,the Sri Lanka Freedom Party(SLFP) has decided to join the unitary government formed by the governing United National Party(UNP) ,TNA will remain as the main opposition party in the parliament with 16  seats the Party sources have said.

Steps Will Be Taken to Sharing The Benefits Of Country's Development To Every Corner Of The Society "-President Sirisene

"During next five yaers Steps will be taken to extend the development of the nation to every corner of the society , to minimize  the deficiency of sharing the income and to uplift the per capita income of persons" Presdient Maithripala Sirisene has said today(01) at the Parliament.

Making a special statement at the inaugural session of the 08th Parliament which convened today President Sirisne has also stressed that the newly formed unitery government comprising the governing United National Party(UNP) and opposition Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) will bring back the intelectuals who left the country in recent years due to professional problems."A Special authority will be set up to welcome them and to take their service for the development programmes here" he has said.

While assuring that his government will implement a non aligned Foreign Policy President Sirisene has said that to develop the country without any difficulty forming an unitary government comprisng the two main parties is must.This would create a new political culture in the country and we should work together as one family to form the unitary government which will address the problems faced by the country".

"You Parliamentariens should take a firm decison on whether to keep the executive presidency created under the 1978 constitution or not.My government will give priority to build the country withing next five years and will use the Policy Propaganda's of other parties too for this process ".

"In the past we heard that the west is trying to take revange from some war heroes of the country.But our government has already reverse that situation and  able to win the international community .

"One of the top priorities of the new government will be  combatting  fraud and to secure state resources.Therefore if anyone is trying to misuse the state resources that person will be severely punished without considering their status" President has further said.

Karu Jayasuriya Has Been Elected As New Speaker Of The Parliament- Several Other Appointments Were Also Made

The National List MP of the governing United National Party(UNP) Karu Jayasuriya has been  unanimously elected as the new speaker of  08 th Parliament which convened it's inaugural session this morning.MP elected through  United Peoples Freedom Alliance(UPFA) Thilanga Sumathipala has been unanimously elected as new deputy speaker of the Parliament.


The Kandy District MP of UNP  Lakshman Kiriella has been selected as new leader of the house while MP Gayanthha Karunathilake has been selected as chief government whip and MP S Adaikalanathan as deputy chairman of committees.

President Maithripala Sirisene had yesterday (31)agreed to allow the Opposition MP's in Parliament to appoint the most suitable candidate for the post of Opposition Leader according to the MP Elect National Freedom Front Leader Wimal Weerawansha.

Innaugural Session Of The 08th Parliament Scheduled To Be Convened Tomorrow(01)

The inaugural  session of the 08th parliament  is scheduled to be convened tomorrow(01) at 9 a.m. with participation of  225 MP'S including 196 newly elected MP'S and 29 selected National List MP'S .


The first duty of the new parliament is to appoint a new speaker and a secret ballot is due to be held in this regard according to political  sources. The governing United National Party(UNP) has nominated the name of it's deputy leader MP Karu Jayasuriya as party's candidate for the speaker's post and a nominee from Sri Lanka Freedom Party(SLFP) is scheduled to be elected as Deputy Speaker the sources  have said.


After the electing of new speaker the newly elected MP'S are due  to be sworn in before him.The rest of the Parliament's schedule for tomorrow will be  included the electing of Deputy Speaker and deputy chairman of selection committee.


After the conclusion of the schedule the speaker is due to postpone  the Parliamentary Session until  evening and at 3 p.m President Maithripala Sirisene is due to make a special statement to the Parliament.

Three Died Due To The Lorry They Traveled In Had Fallen Into A Precipice At Kalutara

Three Persons died yesterday (29) night when the Lorry they traveled in had fallen into a Precipice in Pahala Naragala Area at Horana-Matugama Road(In Kalutara District) according to the Police.

The Three Persons including the Lorry Driver and Two Females succumbed to their injuries after admission to the Horana Hospital.

The Lorry which carried the deceased had veered off the road and fallen into the Precipice when the Lorry Driver had tried to prevent his vehicle
colliding with a Trishaw arrived from the opposite direction the Police have said.

The Police have arrested the Trishaw Driver in connection with the accident.

TNA Is Demanding The Opposition Leader Post As A Section Of Main Opposition UPFA Decided To Join The National Government

The Tamil National Alliance(TNA) is strongly demanding the Opposition Leader Post of the Newly Elected Parliament if a section of main opposition United Peoples Freedom Alliance(UPFA) joining a National Government with governing United National Party (UNP).

The main opposition UPFA has secured 95 seats in the new parliament and TNA has secured 16 seats .However a section of UPFA has decided to join the National Government  with governing UNP and a another section has decided to stay in the Opposition according to Political Sources.

Meanwhile all parties belonging to UPFA are due to meet with UPFA Chairman and President Maithripala Sirisene tomorrow(31) morning  to discuss on the situation arisen regarding the opposition leader post and on the newly formed National Government..

The new Cabinet of the government is scheduled to be sworn in before President Sirisene and Prime Minister Ranil Wikramasinghe on this Tuesday.

Sun Will Be Heading Over Of Sri Lanka From 28th Of August To 07th Of September-Met Department

The Meteorology  Department has said today(30) that the Sun is going to be directly heading over the latitudes of Sri Lanka during   28th of August to 07th of September.Due to this very hot and sunny weather will prevails in the cities where Sun is overheading  the department has stated.

The nearest towns which the Sun was over head today were Tallaimannar,Periyanmadu and Pierillupaikkadavai at 12.12 noon the Met Department has said.

Around 20 Persons Were Injured And Hospitalized Due To A Private Bus-Lorry Collision

Around 20 persons were injured and hospitalized when a Private Bus had collided with a Lorry at Dambulle -Kakirawa Road today according to the Police.

The Injured were admitted to the Dambulle Hospital.The accident was occurred when the Private Bus travelling to Dambulle had collided with a Lorry which was parked on  side of the road at Mirisgoniyawa Junction  this  morning  the Police have said.

Former Eastern Province Commander And MP Karuna Amman Has Stated Former LTTE Leader Prabhakaren Had Committed Suicide

The former Eastern Province Commander of the LTTE Terrorist Group and former MP Vinayagamurthi Muralideran alias Karuna Amman has said today (30) during an interview with an Indian Television Channel  the former LTTE Leader Velupillai Prabhakaren had committed suicide by shooting himself with a firearm.

Responding to a question raised by a reporter Karuna Amman has said  the former LTTE Leader had always carried a firearm with him and he was shooting himself with it from the right hand .

He also stated that if the LTTE has fought a guerrilla   battle it will never lost the battle.

Prabhakaran's wife and daughter were killed due to a shell fire during the final phase of the was Karuna Amman who was appointed as the one of the deputy chairmans of Sri Lanka Freedom Party(SLFP) by former president Mahinda Rajapakshe has said.

Soon after the former president Rajapakshe has lost the Presidential Election on 08th of January this year  Karuna has tried to be united with newly elected President Maithripala Sirisene ,but failed as the President's associates have opposed his presence in the government.Karuna has recently told the local media that he is considering to form a new party of his own to contest in future elections.

No Problem In The Drinking Water Supply To Colombo -National Water Supply And Drainage Board

"There's no problem in the drinking water that supplying to   Colombo and Suburb Areas and therefor the residents in those areas should not get panic on the drinking water supply" The  National  Water Supply And Drainage Board has said today(29).

Due to the water in  Kelaniya River contaminated with Oil the Water Board has suspended the drinking water supply to three municipal council areas in Colombo yesterday(28) for two hours.However the Water Board has managed to bring back the  water supply to normalcy after two hours the board has stressed.

The Water Board will not supply oil contaminated water for the public and there for no need to panic on the situation the Board has further said.

A Batch Of 115 Sri Lankan Domestic Workers Returned The Island From Qatar And Kuwait

A batch of 115 Sri Lankans who worked as House Maids in Qatar and Kuwait has  returned the Island today(29) due to the domestic harrasment they have faced in the hands of their employers.

The Batch comprising with 73 females and 42 males has been returned the country through four Middle Eastern Flights early this morning.The returnees have told the officials here that the Sri Lankan Embassy Staff in Qatar and Kuwait didn't help them to over come their problems,

Meanwhile a batch of 56 Sri Lankan Females worked as House Maids in Saudi Arabia has  returned the country yesterday(28) with courtesy from Foreign Employment Bureau in Sri Lanka.

The Using Of Polythene And Importation And Production Of Asbestos To Be Banned From Next Year --President Sirisene.

President  Maithripala Sirisene has said today(29) that he will introduce  strict laws from next year to avoid using of Polythene and Asbestos which are known as major threats to the people's health and environment.

Under this the use of Polythene will be banned from 01st of January 2016 and the importing and production  of Asbestos will be totally banned from 01st of January 2018 the President has said.

President Sirisene has revealed that he wants to stop using Polythene and to avoid importing and production of Asbestos when he was the Health Minister but has failed to implement them.

The President has made these remarks during a ceremony held today (29) at President's House to hand over of certificates to the school children in Kandy District under the Environmental Service Programme

Sri Lanka To Set Up A New Guinness Book Of World Record Today(29) By Serving Tea For 35,000 Guests

Sri Lankan Tourist Board ,Tea Board and Sri Lankan Air Lines are jointly  planning to set a new kind of guineas book of world record by plucking  3000 kilo grammes of tender tea leaves   within two hour period  through 500 tea plucker's and serving Tea for 35,000 guests in a single day .

Under this 3000 kilo grammes of tender tea leaves plucked yesterday (28) by 500 tea plucker's attach to Kelani Valley Tea Estate  and powdered  them at a tea factory in Nuwara Eliya.

The new Guinness book of world record  will be set up after serving the Tea made by this powdered tea to 35,000 estimated people who are due to attend today's world famous Esala Perahara (Po session) at Kandy.
