"One Hundred Seven Cities In Sri Lanka Now Completely Stopped Selling Cigarettes "-PHI Union

The Public Health Inspectors(PHI) Union had informed the Health Minister Dr.Rajitha Senaratne that the number of Cities in the country that  completely stopped selling Cigarettes to the public is 107.

This includes 22 cities in Jaffna District, 16 Cities in Matara District and 17 Cities  in Kurunagala District.


Due to the various steps taken against Cigarettes including the increasing of the tax percentage imposed on Cigarettes to 90 percent, Covering 80 percent area of the Surface in Cigarette Pack with warning massages ,Introduction of No Smoking Zones and limited the area near schools that selling Cigarettes the number of Cities stopped selling Cigarettes is on the increase the PHI Union has stated.

Meanwhile Health Minister is expecting the number of Cities that stopped selling Cigarettes to be exceeded  200 by the year 2019.

Five Youth Were Arrested With Kerala Cannabis In Possession

Five youths had arrested by the
 Officials attached to the Excise Office in Hatton with 13 Grammes Of Kerala Cannabis in their possession at Kotagala and Thalawakale areas on last Monday (20).

The youth who are residents of Lindula and Thalawakale areas are due to be produced before the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate Court.

Cabinet Had Rejected A Proposal On Making A Minimum Age Limit Of Driving A Three Wheeler To 35 Years

Cabinet has yesterday (21)rejected a
proposal submitted by the Minister Of Transport Nimal Siripala De Silva to the Cabinet on making the minimum age limit of driving A Three Wheeler to 35 years .

Cabinet had rejected the proposal after several Minister's including Minister of Finance Mangala Samaraweera and Prrsident Maithripala Sirisena had spoken against the proposal during the Cabinet Meeting held at Presidential Secretariat .

Due to opposition of other Ministers Transport Minister has later withdrawn the proposal.

Meanwhile Minister Of Finance Mangala Samaraweera has announced that the Government will regulate the Three Wheelers in the country.

Three Persons Arrested With 14 Tonnes Of Illegal Beedi Wrappings

Sri Lanka Customs had arrested three
Persons who had illegally smuggled 14 tonnes of "Beedi" wrappings to the country on the pretext of importing goods yesterday (21).

Customs officers had taken in to custody the "Beedi" Wrappings during a search operation carried out on a container at Thotalanga container yard.

The estimated value of the Beedi Wrappings taken in to custody is around Rs.1.3 million.

A Group Of An Unidentified Persons Had Robbed A Bank At Gandara

A group of an unidentified persons
arrived in at a private bank in Parawahara ,Gandara this evening (21)by two motorcycles  had robbed around Rs.300,000 from the bank and fled away according to the Police .

The suspects who had arrived in the Bank while covering their faces with full face helmets and equipped with a gun shot and injured a female who was at the Bank during the robbery.The injured female had been admitted to the Matara General Hospital for treatment .

Gandara Police are investigating on the incident.


Three Police Officers Arrested Over Planning A Robbery Later Released On Bail

Special Police Task Force Personal have
arrested three Police Officers including a Police Inspector and two Police Constables attached to the Anti Corruption  Unit of The Panadura Police division over planning a robbery at Kalutara this morning  (21)and  later in the evening announced that they were arrested mistakenly .

The Three Police  Officers were arrested mistakenly on the facts based on  the incident Police Media Spokesman 'S office Has announced.

During the inquiry conducted by the Organized  Crimes Investigations  unit it has been proved that the three officers were arrested mistakenly .

Due to this situation the Three officers have been released on bail after been produced before Kalutara Magistrate Court this evening.

However another Four persons arrested over planning a robbery were also produced before the kalutara court this evening and three of them had been remanded until 23 rd of this month and one was released on bail.

A Large Extent Of Land Belonging To A Reserve At Habarana Had Destroyed Due To A Fire

A large extent  of land belonging to  the
Habarana  -Galoya forest reserve had been destroyed due to a sudden fire erupted at the reserve today (21)according to the Wild Life Department.

The officers attached to Wild Life Department ,Fire Brigade of Polonnaruwa Municipal Council and Army Had doused the fire it has been revealed

The cause of the fire has not yet been revealed.

A Person Was Killed Due To A Wild Elephant Attack

A 55 year old person was killed due to a
Wild Elephant attack at Himidurawa 10 Ela village in Uhana,Ampara last night (20) according to reports.

The Deceased had ran away several meters after seen the Elephant coming towards him ,However the Elephant had run after him and attacked and killed him on the wall of Himidurawa reservoir it has been revealed.

The deceased was a resident of the Himidurawa village and the Elephant caused his death was responsible for another death in the village recently the villagers have stated.

They have stated that the lives of other people at the village too in danger due to the Wild Elephant.

Justice Minister Has Opened First Out Of The Three Special High Courts Decided To Open To Solve Large Scale Financial Crimes

Minister of Justice and Prison Reforms
Thalatha Atukorale had today (21)opened the first Special Tribunal High Court out of the three Special High Courts decided to be set up to hear cases regarding Misuse of State Funds and large scale financial frauds in front of the Sri Lanka Law Collage at Colombo Hulftsdorf .

The first case  of this court will be heard on 24 th of August regarding financial fraud case filed against the former Presidents chief of staff Gemini Senarat and three others.

Government has decided to establish three Special Tribunal High Courts after amending the Judicial Organization act to solve large scale financial crimes already delaying to be solved.



Riot Police Had Fired Tear Gas And Water Cannons Twice To Disperse A Group Of University Students While Attempting To March Towards UGC

Riot Police have fired tear gas and
water cannons twice to disperse a group of University students attached to the South Eastern University and Inter-  University Students Federation (IUSF) who had attempted to march towards the University Grants Commission  (UGC) building at Ward Place and gathered in front of the stage where a "Satyagraha" campaign staged by University students in Town Hall.

On the  first instsnce Riot Police have fired the Tear Gas and Water Cannons towards the Group of University Students who had began a protest march from University Of Aesthetic Studies in Colombo this afternoon ,when they have attempted to enter the Ward Place to March towards UGC Building .The Ward Place was closed temporarily for traffic at that time and the motorists have been advised to use an alternative routes.

Three Student protesters and a Buddhist Monk Tampitiye Sugathananda thero who is a convener of the Inter University Bhikku Students Federation, had been injured and admitted to the Colombo National. Hospital for treatment due to the firing of Tear Gas.

Due to this situation a heavy traffic was reported from Town Hall at that time.

Afterwards the Protesting University Students gathered in front of the stage near Colombo Municipal Council where a Satyagraha campaign is being held by demanding the solutions to the students problems at Technical faculty of the South Eastern University mainly regarding the abolishing of studentship of a group of students there.

Then Riot Police had second time Fired Tear Gas and Water cannons  towards the stage there to disperse the group of University Students gathered there.

The student protesters had staged the protest march to oppose the delaying of providing solutions for the problems of the University Students .
