A Fire Destroyed A Large Acres Of Land In Malewana Reserve

A large acres of land have been destroyed due to a huge fire erupted in the Malewana Mountain reserve at Malewanayaya road in Wellawaya area since this morning(17).


The fire which is spreading rapidly due to the dry weather  and strong winds Prevails in the area had so far destroyed a number of endangered species in the reserve it has been reported.

Wellawaya Police believes a Hunter may have lit the fire.

A House In Hatton Had Been Severely Damaged After A Tree Had Fallen On To A House

A house at Gnananandagama in Watawala-Hatton area had been severely damaged including the House roof due to a huge tree fallen on to the House this morning(17)as a result of the strong winds blown across the area.

However two elderly females and two children who were there at the time of the incident have escape unharmed it has been reported.

The tree had fallen on to a room of the house and no one was there in the room at the time of the incident.

Engineering Faculty Of Peradeniya University Had Been Closed

Authorities have closed the Engineering Faculty of the Peradeniya University today(17)until further notice due to the problem arisen when giving examination candidacy to the Faculty students as they were not able to fullfill 80 percent attendance rate.

Due to this situation all the students at Engineering Faculty hostels have been asked to vacate their premises by 2 p.m today.

Meanwhile according to the University-s Student Unions the reason behind the not fullfilling of  80 percent Attendance rate is due to the closure of Universities as a result of  two month old strike of non academic staff.

Four Foreign Nationals Have Been Arrested While Atrempting To Smuggle US Dollar Notes

Four Chinese and Nepali Nationals have been arrested by the Airport Customs Officers while attempting to smuggle around  Rs.20.75 million worth US Dollars notes illegally  out of the country at the Katunayake, Bandaranaike International Airport this morning(17).


The four suspects have been arrested while attempting to smuggle the US Dollars notes to Mumbai,India it has been revealed.

The money recovered in possession of the suspects had  earned through playing Casino games here according to Customs.

Three Persons Have Been Sentenced To Death Over A Murder In 1996

Colombo High Court Judge Vikum Kaluarachchi had today(17)sentenced three persons to death over killing of a person on 02nd of November 1996 by attacking him with a sharp knife at Pannipitiya area.

The three suspects who are residents of Pannipitiya area had been also sentenced seven and half years rigorous imprisonment over critically injuring the wife of the deceased by attacking with a knifem

A Body Of A University Student Fallen From Asupini Falls Had Been Recovered

A body of an Undergraduate attached to the University of Kelaniya who had fallen from Asupini falls at Aranayake area on 14th of July ,had been recovered this evening(17)from the
lower section of the falls.

The body was recovered with the help of Navy divers and residents of the area it has been revealed.

The deceased had fallen from the top of the fall while viewing it.
