A Stock Of Explosives Had Been Recovered In Mannar

Mannar Police have recovered a stock
of explosives believes to be made by LTTE including A Hand Grenade ,A Motor Bullet  and  four cannon gun Bullets  near the runway in Thalladi,Mannar yesterday (18).

The stock of Explosives had been recovered during a search mission carried out under a court order obtained from Mannar Magistrate Court .

The Bomb Disposal Squad of the Special  Police Task Force Personal is due to defuse the stock of Explosives recovered .

Soft Drink Companies Have Requested Concessions -But Government Is Giving Priority To Protect People From Diseases -Health Minister

Soft Drink Companies have requested concessions from the Government  for their products during the National Economic Council meeting held recently according to Minister Of Health ,Nutrition and Indeginous Medicine Dr.Rajitha Senaratne .

Addressing a function held at Meerigama, Health Mimister has said that Government has given priority to protect people from non communicable diseases caused due to things like  Soft Drinks marketed by these companies not to provide concessions to the companies .

These Soft Drink Companies are spreading non communicable diseases among consumers by selling Soft Drinks with higher sugar content  and due to this Government need to spend a large  amount of money to treat persons with non communicable diseases he has said.

These Companies should act fairly in their businesses  and their  purpose should be to serve the people Minister has stressed.

Ministry of Health has recently introduced traffic light system for soft drinks and under this system  the labels of Soft Drinks should display the sugar content of the Soft Drinks .

Government has also introduced a tax system to be imposed on Soft Drinks through the Annual Budget. 

Boards Of Directors And Heads Of Three Financial Institutes Are Still Functioning Even After Presidents Announcement On Dissolving Boards Of Directors Of The Institutions

Although President Maithripala
Sirisena has announced the dissolvement of Boards Of Directors of Board Of Investment  (BOI) ,People's Bank and Bank Of Ceylon with effect from midnight on last Thursday,(17) Boards Of Directors and heads of these institutions not have resigned or removed from their posts up to now it has been reported.

The Board Of Investment is belongs to the Ministry of Development Strategies and International Trade and People's Bank and Bank Of Ceylon belongs to Ministry of Public Enterprises and Kandy City Development and the respective Ministers of these Ministries ,Malik Samarawikrama and Lakshman Kiriella have not even requested the Board of Directors and heads of these Institutions to resign from their posts according to reports.

The Respective Mimisters have appointed the Boards of Directors and Heads of these Three financial Institutions.On the other hand  President has no power to dissolve Boards Of Directors of these Institutions as stated sources have said.

Also as President has stated no complaints have been received by the higher authorities on misuse of State Funds in these institutions.

Meanwhile governing United National Party is due to discuss on the sudden announcement made by President Sirisena over the dissolvement of Boards Of Directors of three financial institutions. 




Attorney General To File A Revised Petition At Court Of Appeal Against The Court Verdict Given To MP Johnston Fernando And Two Others

Attorney General is due to file  a

revised petition at Court of Appeal challenging the verdict given by Kurunagala  High Court (17)by acquitting the former Trade Minister MP Johnston Fernando and three others from all charges against them according to Attorney General's Department .

Kurunagala High Court has yesterday acquitted of  all charges levelled against former Trade Mimister Johnston Fernando  ,His private Secretary Mohommad Zakir and former Laksathosa Chairman Nalin Fernando over purchasing more than Rs.3.8 million worth goods from Sathosa Kurunagala Branch without paying money to distribute among supporteRs of MP Fernando  during North Western Provincial Council Election held under previous regime .

Former DIG Nalaka De Silva Had Been Questioned Around Eight And Half Hours By The CID

The former Deputy Inspector General
Of Police (DIG) attached to the Terrorism Investigations Division, Nalaka De Silva had been questioned around eight and half hours by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID)officials today (18) over the charges levelled against him on conspiring to assasinate President Maithripala Sirisena and former Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapakshe.

The former DIG Nalaka De Silva had appeared before the CID Headquarters  this morning as per the request made by CID.He is due to reappear before the CID Tomorrow  (19)morning .

The working Director of Anti Corruption Force Namal Kumara has complainEd on the Assassination Plot by producing an audio tape of a  conversation held  between him and former DIG Silva on the plot. 

A Person Was Killed And Five Others Injured Due To Lorry- Tractor Collision

A Person Was Killed and five others
have been injured and hospitalized after the Tractor and a Lorry they were travelling in colliding with each other at Puliyankulam, in Vavuniya this morning(18).

The six injured persons one critically have been admitted to Vavuniya Hospital for treatment where the critically injured person had succumbed to his injuries .

The Tractor contains paddy cutting  machine was parked at the road when a Lorry arrived in rare side of the Tractor and colliding with it, it has been reported.

Police are investigating on the incident .





Prime Minister To Leave India On A Two Day Official Tour

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil
Wikramasinghe is due to leave for India this evening (18)on a two day official visit .

During his visit Prime Minister Wikramasinghe is due to hold talks with his counterpart Indian Prime Minister Narendra Singh Modi on this Saturday (20) .Prime Minister is also due to meet  several higher Indian officials including  Minister Of External Affairs Shushma Swaraj .

During the talks with Indian heads Prime Minister Wikramasinghe is due to discuss on several matters interested to both countries including India aided projects in Sri Lanka and Chinese influence in the region.

SLFP Organizer In Kegalle Arrested With Three Illegal Firearms In Possession

Police Special Task Force Personal have
arrested the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP ) organizer in Kegalle District Imithiaz Cader with three illegal firearms in his possession at his house in Bolahalla ,Kegalle this morning (18).

Accordingly Police have taken in to custody a T-56 firearm,Repeater Firearm and MP-5 firearm with bullets in the possession of the suspect during a raid carried out in his house.

The suspect along with the firearms taken in to cudtody ate due to be handed over to the Organized Crimes Prevention Unit for further investigations.

A 37 Year Old Drug Smuggler Was Arrested With A Haul Of Heroin In Possession

Police officers attached to Colombo
Crimes Division have arrested a 37 year old Drug Smuggler Sameera Rasanga Gunasekare allias "Hybrid Sudda" with 1.100 Kilo Grammes of Heroin in his possession at Padukka area this morning  (18).

Police Officers have also taken in to custody Rs.750,000  in cash and two Motor Cars in possession of the suspect who has been identified as an assistant of Imprisoned Dematagoda Chaminda who is currently serving a death row with three others over the killing of former MP Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra.

The suspect is a resident of Angoda,Himbutana area .The estimated value of the haul of Heroin taken in to custody in his possession is around Rs.13 million.

Colombo Crimes Division is due to produce the suspect before the court to obtain detention order to question him further .

A Person Has Died After Colliding With A Train

A 48 year old person has died after
colliding with a Train whilest walking along the Rail Track at Fairfield Gardens in Borella last night (17).

The critically injured person had succumbed to his injuries after admission to Colombo ,National Hospital .

The deceased was identified as a resident in Borella.





A Police Constable Has Died After His Motorcycle Colliding With A Wild Elephant

A 32 year old Police Constable attached
to the Modara Police Station has died after the Motorcycle he was riding in colliding with a Wild Elephant on last Tuesday (16)near the Gnanakkulam Bridge at Kandy-Jaffna A-9 Road .

The critically injured Police Constable who waa travelling from his Motorcycle from Anuradhapura to Kekirawa  when colliding with a Wild Elephant crossing   the road, had succumbed to his injuries after admission to Maradankadawala Hospital.

The Deceased was a resident of Ula galla,Thirappane area.

Colombo High Court Had Sentenced A Former Accupuncture Doctor A Two Year Rigorous Imprisonment Over Sexually Assaulting A Female Patient

JanakI Rajarathna  has yesterday (17)sentenced a former Doctor attached to the Accupuncture Center of Kalubowila(South Colombo ) Teaching Hospital D.P Jayaratne a two year rigorous imprisonment suspended for 25 years over sexually assaulting of a female who came to receive Acupuncture Treatment to the center.

The incident had taken place on 07th of May or a near by date in 2006.

The former Accupuncture Doctor D.P. Jayaratne had been sentenced to two year rigorous imprisonment after he had accepted charges against him through his lawyer .

The Accused doctor was ordered to payRs.200,000 as compansation to the victim and a fine of Rs.25,000. Imposed on him by the Judge.

Attorney General Had Filed indictments at Court against the former Accupuncture doctor.

National Police Commission Has Interdicted DIG Nalaka De Silva Yesterday

National Police Commission has
interdicted the Deputy Inspector General Of Police (DIG)Nalaka De Silva last afternoon (16)as per the recommendation of Law and Order Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara.

DIG Nalaka De Silva who is charged over conspiring to assasinate President Maithripala Sirisena and former Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapakshe by the working director of Anti Corruption Force Namal Kumara, has avoided   appear before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID)to give a statement regarding the charges.

The recommendation of the interdiction of DIG Nalaka De Silva had been sent to the National Police Commission by the secretary of Ministry of Law and Order Padmasiri Jayamanna.

Earlier DIG  had been sent on compulsory leave by the National Police Commission as per the instructions of Law and Order Minister. 

Cabinet Spokesman Has Denied Reports Published That There Was A Cabinet Paper Submitted To The CABINET On Handing Over Eastern Port Terminal To India

Co-Cabinet Spokesman ,Health Minister Dr.Rajitha Senaratne has  denied that there was a Cabinet Paper submitted to the Cabinet by Minister of Port  and Shipping Mahinda Samarisinghe to handover the Eastern Terminal of Colombo Harbor to India on lease .

There was no such Cabinet Paper submitted to the Cabinet in this regard so far Dr.Senaratne has said during the Cabinet briefing held at Government Information Department today (17).

However some reports appeared in media have  stated today that there was a Cabinet Paper submitted regarding handing over of the Eastern terminal attached to Colombo Harbor to India on lease and President has strongly opposed to it during the Cabinet meeting held last night (16).

President has also indicated the importance of maintaining Eastern Terminal of Colombo Harbor under Sri Lanka  Ports Authority during the meeting the reports have said.

President Has Dissolved The Director Boards Of Three State Financial Institutions

President Maithripala Sirisena has
dissolved the Board Of Directors of three State Owned Financial Institutions, namely The Board Of Investment  (BOI)Bank Of Ceylon and People's Bank with effect from midnight tonight  (17) over an allegation levelled against the Boards on misuse of funds in these institutions .

A proper investigation will be conducted on the allegations levelled  against Board Of Directors of these three state institutions the Presidential Media Division has announced.




Former Minister MP Johnston Fernando And Two Others Acquitted From All Charges

Former Trade Minister and MP
Johnston Fernando and two others arrested and remanded over involving in a financial fraud at CWE  (Sathosa)branch in Kurunagala ,have been acquitted from all charges levelled against them  today (27)by the Kurunagala High Court Judge Menaka Jayasundara.

Accordingly the three suspects MP Johnston Fernando ,His private Secretary Mohommad Zakir and former Laksathosa Chairman Nalin Fernando have been acquitted from all charges levelled against them on purchasing goods worth more than Rs. 3.8 million from a CWE Kurunagala branch without paying money in 2013 ,due to the poor and contradictory evidence produced against the suspects by complainants it has been revealed. 

The Police Financial Crimes Investigations Division (FCID)has filed charges against the suspects.

The Bail Application filed by the suspects has been rejected by the Court of Appeal recently.

Meanwhile former President MP Mahinda Rajapakshe and his son MP Namal Rajapakshe had met the released MP Johnston Fernando at his residence in Kurunagala according to reports.

Funeral Of Late Singer Visharada Amara Ranathunge To Be Held At Borella Cemetery

The funeral of the late popular singer Professor Visharada Amara Ranathunge who had passed away on Monday Night (15)at the Colombo National Hospital is due to be held at Borella Cemetery tomorrow afternoon (18).

The Body of the deceased singer is scheduled to be taken to University Of Visual and Performing Arts at 2 p.m tomorrow it has been announced.

The Late singer  who was also a Music Teacher  ,was 79 years old at the time of her death.

A Section Of A Ratnapura-Embilipitiya Main Road Had Sunk

A section of the Ratnapura-Embilipitiya
main road had sunk from left side at Thiriwanaketiya area today (17)as a result of Heavy showers prevailed in the area it has been reported.

Due to the sunken area of the road transport activities of the road had been restricted to one lane and the sunken area has been covered with Road barricades according to authorities.

As a result people and Motorists are being faced enormous difficulties  it has been revealed.

The Road Development Authority has meanwhile taken steps to build a temporary Alternative Entry road to the Ratnapura -Embilipitiya main road from right hand side of the road .


A 40 Year Old Person Was Killed Due To A Wild Elephant Attack

A 40 year old person was killed due to a

Wild Elephant attack at Eriyawala area in Somawathiya, Polonnaruwa this morning (17)whilest he was walking towards  Somawathiya Temple  from Sungawila area.

The deceased who was a resident of Hali-Ela ,Badulla was walking towards Somawathiya Temple from Sungawila area to worship the Temple at the time of the incident .

Wild Life officers have appealed from the  worshippers not to walk towards Somawathiya Religious Land from Sungawila area due to the Wild Elephant threat .

Three Persons Have Been Arrested Whilest Attempting To Fly Algeria Through Fraudulent Visas

Criminal Investigations Department 
(CID)officials attached to Katunayake Airport have arrested three Persons attempting to fly Algeria through Fraudulent visas today  (16)at the Katunayake ,Bandaranaike International Airport .

CID officials had also arrested another two persons who had assisted the suspects .

The suspects who are residents of Wattala,Point of Pedro and Mannar areas are due to be produced before the Negambo Magistrate Court.

An Australian Passport Holder Was Arrested With A Stock Of Gold Jewelry

An officers attached to the Narcotic
Control unit of the Airport Customs had today (16)arrested a 30 year old former Sri Lankan national now holds an Australian Passport attempting to smuggle a stock of Gold Jewelry weighing 1.206 Kilo Grammes to the country illegally .

The suspect who had arrived in from Singapore has hidden the stock of Gold Jewelry which wrapped in four parcels inside his cloths it has been revealed .

The stock of Gold Jewelry recovered in possession of the suspect is worth around Rs.6.63 million .

The Australian Passport holder was arrested with the stock of Gold Jewelry while he was leaving the Airport through Green Channel .

Airport Customs are conducting an investigations over the incident. 

President Instructed The Finance Ministry To Submit A Report On Goods That Can Be Restricted Importing To Sri Lanka

President Maithripala Sirisena has
today (16)instructed the Ministry of Finance to search and submit a report within a week's time on the goods that can be restricted from importing  to Sri Lank as a step to face country "s  economic Challanges at present  .

President has instructed on this during a meeting of National Economic Council held at President's office today .

During the meeting it was widely discussed on how to face economic Challanges caused as a result of strengthening the US Dollar in an International Market .

A large number of unnecessary goods are being reported as imported to Sri Lanka at present caused waste of foreign reserves it has been revealed.

Due to this situation National Economic Council has suggested to restrict importing these unnecessary goods and encouraged local producers to produce them here in.view of saving  unnecessary spendings .




Two Drug Smugglers Have Been Sentenced To Death

Colombo High Court has today
(16)sentenced two Drug Smugglers who had been arrested and remanded over packetting Heroin at Mirihana ,Nugegoda in 2008 ,to death .

The Colombo High Court Judge Vikum Kaluarachchi had imposed the death sentence on the two suspects who are 37 years old after found guilty on packetting 122 Grammes of Heroin .


Transport Activities In Nawalapitiya-Gampola Main Road Disrupted Due To A Falling Of A Tree Branch And Power Line On To A Lorry

Transport activities of Nawalapitiya -
Gampola main road had been disrupted since this evening (16) afrer a branch of a Huge Tree and high voltage power line had fallen on to a Lorry parked near the main road it has been reported.

The incident occurred as a result of the heavy showers prevailed in Nawalapitiya area this noon.

No one was injured as a result of the incident ,However power supply to the Nawalapitiya -Warakawa area is being halted due to it.

Due to the removal of Fallen tree branch and power line ,transport activities of the Nawalapitiya road had been restricted to one lane for a one hour period this evening.

Female Consultant Physician Arrested And Remanded Over The Killing Of A Police Inspector During A Vehicle Collision Has Been Further Remanded

Kumara has today (16) further remanded the 39 year old  female  Consultant physician Kavinga who had been arrested and remanded over the killing of a Police Inspector when her vehicle collided with the vehicle the Police Inspector was travelling at Boralesgamuwa on 30 th of September, until 30 th of October.

However the suspected female Physician attached to Ratnapura General Hospital who is  being warded  in Kalubowila Teaching Hospital since her arrest although not received any injuries due to the Accident, had not appeared before the Nugegoda Magistrate Court today for the hearing of the court case against her.

She was not able to attend court hearing as she  had been taken to the Medical Research Institute in Borella for a Medical examination Prisons Officers had informed the court .

Meanwhile Nugegoda Chief Magistrate has refused to grant bail to the Female Physician as the Police had objected to it .

Another Soil Mound Above Castlereigh Reservoir Is Under Landslide Threat

Another Soil Mound along with two houses located above the Castlereigh Reservoir at Newweligama ,Norwood area are being  faced with a Landslide threat according to National Building Research Organization  (NBRO).

Residents of the two houses under Landslide threat had been evacuated from the houses and moved to their relatives houses according to reports.

Due to this situation authorities are now working to make recomm endations  to build an alternative road above the Landslide threat area after the Landslide threats are over  , to facilitate transport activities there .

Reconstruction work has already begun to develop an alternative road that  run across a Tea Estate above the Landslide area for the use of light vehicles.

The Hatton -Bagawanrhalawa-Balangoda-Maskeliya road which closed down temporarily due to the Landslide threat remains closed .

First Professor Of The Local Music Industry Professor ,Visharada Amara Ranathunge Has Passed Away

The first female Professor of the Local Sinhala Music industry Popular songstress  Dr. Visharada Amara Ranathunge has passed away last night (15)while receiving treatment for an illness  at Intensive Care Unit of the Colombo National Hospital.

She was 79 years old at the time of her death.

The late Professor ,Visharada Amara Ranathunge who is  the wife of Popular classical singer Dr .Visharada Dayaratna Ranathunge had sung many popular classics including "Sapumal suwandak se",Chamara Pawan Sala","Eye Ra Oba","Radha Krishna", "Maha Ra Yame","Palu Pale" ,"Pem Sililare", Sulochana", "Sala lihiniyo" ,"Senpathiyan gana",songs.

Her funeral is scheduled to be taken place on this Thursday in Colombo.

"May she attain Supreme bliss of Nibbana".

"Ava " Group Leader Was Arrested Whilest Distributing Diaspora Money

Jaffna had arrested a 29 year old  leader of the Sword gang operating in Jaffna peninsula "Ava" group last Saturday  (13)who had distributed money sent by the Foreign Diaspora members among Ava group members at Chunnakam area .

The suspect was arrested whilest travelling in a Motorcycle by  carrying a sword it has been revealed.

The Mobile Phone recovered in his possession carries vital information on Ava group members according to Police.

Meanwhile Police have launched a special raid in Jaffna Peninsula to arrest Ava group members .
