Twelve Out Of Every One Hundred Thousand Sri Lankan Children Under 16 Years Of Age Dying Due To Accidents-Dr.Jayaratne

In Sri Lanka 12 out of  every 100,000 Children under 16 years of age  are dying due to  accidents according to the Consultant Community Physician Dr.Kapila Jayaratne  .Around 90% of these deaths have  occurred due to blocking of respiratory system he has said.

The deaths among st  Sri Lankan Children of under 16 years due to the blocking of Respiratory System are on the increase Dr.Jayaratne has stressed.The majority of those died due to the accidents are boys it has been revealed.

Addressing a Media Seminar on "Preventing Accidents Among Children" held at  Health Education Bureau today(11) Dr.Jayaratne has said that Accidents are identified as the fourth major cause  for the deaths amongs t children under 5 years of age.

Two Former Prime Ministers Have Been Appointed As Senior Presidential Advisers

Two former prime ministers Ratnasiri Wikramanayake and D.M Jayaratne have been appointed as the Senior Advisers to  President Maithripala Sirisene on Political Affairs with immediate effect.

The two veteran politicians have  received  letters of appointment of their posts from the President yesterday(10) evening.

Air Marshal Kolitha Gunathilake Has Been Appointed As New Chief Of Defense Satff

Air Marshal Kolitha Gunathilake has been appointed as the new chief of Defense Staff with effect from 16th of June according to the Air Force .

Air Marshal Gunathilake who is also the current commander of the Sri Lanka Air Force will replace the current Chief Of Defense Staff General Jagath Jaysuriya.

Consumer Affairs Authority Has Detained 27,000 Kilo Grammes of spoiled Red Rice From Colombo

The Consumer Affairs Authority Officers have found 27,000 Kilo Grammes of Red Rice spoiled by Worms and Weevils from a  store in Paliyagoda Area today(10).This stock of spoiled rice was imported by a Colombo Businessman to feed animals  and it was prepared to issue to the local market   for human consumption at  the time Consumer Affairs Authority Officers have raided the store it has been reported.  

  The stock of spoiled red rice was packed in 25 gramme bags and prepared to issue to the local market according to the officers of the Consumer Affairs Authority.The authority had recorded a  statement from the store keeper of the store where the spoiled rice stock was stored and planning to take legal action against the businessman who imported this rice stock.

Former Minister MP Basil Rajapakshe Was Remanded Further Until 18th Of June

The imprisoned former Economic Development Minister MP Basil Rajapakshe was again remanded further until 18th of June t by the Kaduwela Magistrate after he was produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate Court today(10).The other three former officers of his ministry who were also in remand for the same allegation leveled against former Minister Rajapakshe were also remanded until 18th of June by the Magistrate.

The Former Minister and three of his former officers were arrested by the police financial crimes investigations division on 22nd of April over misusing state funds belonging to the Divi Naguma Programme.

Around 80 Estate Workers Have Hospitalized After Consuming Agrochemical Contained Tea

Around 80 Estate Workers in Piranmalai Area at Haputale(Hill Country)were hospitalized this morning due to poisoning of Tea they have consumed according to the Police.The Tea the ill workers have consumed had prepared by heating the water flowing from the hills Police have said.

It has been suspected that Agrochemicals spraying for cultivations in the hills that might  contained in the water which used to prepare the Tea.The Estate Workers who fell sick after consuming Tea have been admitted to the Diaythalawa and Haputale Hopsitals.

Four Opposition MP'S Appointed As Deputy Ministers

Four Parliamentarians representing main opposition Sri Lanka Freedom Party(SLFP) have taken oaths today (10) as deputy ministers before President Maithripala Sirisena .MP'S Sanath Jayasuriya,Eric Weerawardene,Thilanga Sumathipala and Wijaya Dahanayake were sworn in as new deputy ministers.

Last week President has appointed five SLFP MP's as new Ministers.

Community Physicians Are Advising The Public To Use Natural Flavoring Spices To Taste Food Without Using Salt

As the High Blood Pressure is on the increase among st both youth and elderly  people in Sri Lanka the Community Physicians are advising the public that without using salt which is key to increase blood pressure  to taste food add  natural flavoring spices like Cinnamon,Curry Leaves and Cardomom to taste the food.

By using these natural flavoring spices not only the taste the goodness of the food to will improve they have said.

Due to Higher Salt Intake in the Sri Lankan Society high blood pressure among st Sri Lankans are on increase and as a result  non communicable diseases like Heart Diseases,Diabetes and Stroke too are on the
increase it has been reported.

Non Of The Body Massage Centers Using The Name Ayurveda Have Registered At Ayurveda Medical Council-Ayurveda Commissioner

The Sri Lanka Ayurvedic Medical Council has not registered any of the thousands of  Body Massage Centers situated throughout the country  which are  using the name "Ayurveda"  according to the Medical Council.Using the  "Ayrveda" Name for body massage centers is illegal as non of the recognized Ayurvedic Practitioners in the country have given advice to such centers  the Ayurvedic Medical Council has said.

Even These body massage centers with the name Ayurveda are misguiding both locals and foreigners by stating that the Body Massage is linked with Ayurveda which is not the Council has stressed.

Only 146 normal body massage centers without the name Ayurveda which  are functioning in hotels were registered at the Medical Council it has been revealed.

According to the Ayurveda Commissioner P.S.K.R Weerakoon  Ayurvedic Medical Council with the help of  Police are raiding those body massage centers using the name Ayurveda illegally .

Many of these body massage centers which are not registered at the Ayurveda Medical Council are functioning as brothels  according to sources.

Sri Lankan Couple Arrested At The Air Port With Over Rs.1 Million Worth Gemstones And Gold Jewelry

A Sri Lankan Couple who tried to smuggle over Rs. 1 million worth Gems and Gold Jewelry out of the country has been arrested by Sri Lankan Customs at the Katinayake Bandaranaike International Air Port this morning.

The Couple, Businessman and his wife reside in Ratnapura District has been arrested after the custom officers were detected the stock of gemstones and gold jewelry concealed inside a wallet within i one of their luggage's it has been revealed. The suspects were arrived Katunayake Air Port to board  a flight to Beijing.,China in order to participate a Trade Fair there.

The Sri Lankan Custom Officers have been confiscated the stock of gemstones and gold jewelry.

Cabinet Approved The New Proposal On 20th Amendment

The Cabinet has today(08) approved the 20th Amendment to the Constitution which was forward by the Prime Minister Ranil Wikramasinha .The Amendment has proposed to elect 125 MP'S to the Parliament from first past the post system ,75 MP'S from Proportional Representation System and 25 MP'S from the National List.

After discussed on  content of the 20th Amendment Cabinet has approved the Amendment.The government is due to prepare the draft bill of  new proposal and submit to the Cabinet again in four days time according to sources.

Former President's Son MP Namal Asked To Appear Before CID

The eldest son of the former president Mahinda Rajapakshe ,MP Namal Rajapakshe has been asked to appear before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to record a statement  on 12th of June for an allegation leveled against him according to reports.However according to the MP Rajapakshe he is not aware the allegation leveled against him.

Colombo High Court Postponed The Hearing Of Fomer Minister Rajapakshe's Bail Application

The Colombo High Court has today(08) postponed the hearing of Bail Application filed by the imprisoned former economic development minister Basil Rajapakshe until 15th of June.The Colombo High Court Judge Sarojani Kusala had ordered to postpone the hearing when the bail application of former minister has taken up today for hearing.

The former minister Rajapakshe who is also the younger brother of former president Mahinda Rajapakshe was remanded by the Kaduwela Magistrate Court over the allegation leveled against him on misusing millions of state funds belonging to the Divi Naguma Programme launched by his ministry.He is now warded in Merchant Ward at Colombo National Hospital for Cardiac Treatment.

Sri Lankan Sprinter K.L.A Nimali has won the Bronze Medal in 800 Meters Women's Final  worked out this evening in the 21 st Asian Athletic Championships currently underway in Wuhan City of  China.It's the first medal Sri Lanka has won in the championships so far.

Nine Police OIC'S Including OIC Of Police Financial Crimes Investigations Division Were Transferred

Nine Police OIC'S (Officers In Charge) including the OIC of Police Financial Crimes Investigations Division(FCID) have been transferred with effect from today(07) according to the Police Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekere.The transferring of the OIC in Police Financial Crimes Investigations Division drew attention to many as the the Division carried out large scale financial corruptions occurred during the previous government.

The Division it self arrested several politicians in the previous government including the former Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapakshe for alleged financial crimes.

The main opposition United Peoples Freedom Alliance(UPFA) has criticized the division heavily during last couple of weeks and charged the FCID was established under the recommendation of Prime Minister Ranil Wikramasinha to hunting  down politicians of the previous government.The special Police Unit was established by a sub committee appointed by the Prime Minister Ranil Wikaramasinha,


Four Killed And Thirteen Injured Due To A Van They Were Traveled In Fell Down A Precipice

Four Persons were killed and 13 others were injured as the Van they were traveled in veered off the Road and fell down a Precipice at Semuwatte Area In Matale District(Hill Country)this afternoon according to the Police.Two Women and Two men were killed due to this accident.

The injured were admitted to the Kandy Teaching  Hospital for the treatment.

Nutritional Problems Increased The Overweight,Obesity And Thinness Among Sri Lankans Males And Females

Due to the Nutritional Problems ,Overweight,Obesity and Thinness  among st the Sri Lankan males and females  belonging to the age group 18-59 are on increase according to the latest nutrition survey.

The latest survey results have shown that the overweight among st Sri Lankan Males and Females of the 18-59 age group is 22% and 24.6% receptively and obesity is 4.2% and 6.9% among st males and females of the said age group.The Thinness among st males belonging to  the said age group in Sri Lanka  is 16.2% the survey has revealed.

Only 81 MP'S Have Signed The No Confidence Motion Against Premier- Finance Minister Karunanayake

Although some opposition MP'S who were handed over the no confidence motion to the speaker  against prime minister Ranil Wikramasinha have stated that around 112 MP'S have signed the motion only 81 MP'S have put their signatures on that motion according to Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake.

The finance minister has said at a function held in the official residence of Prime Minister ,The Temple Trees today(06) that according to the reliable sources majority of MP'S in the parliament have not signed the motion.The Minister has challenged the opposition to present the no confidence motion to the parliament soon.

Meanwhile an opposition MP ,Bandula Gunawardene has said today during a press briefing held in Colombo that around 120 MP'S have agreed to signed the no confidence motion.

Four Persons Were Killed Due To A Passenger Bus -Three Wheeler Collision At Eheliyagoda

Around four persons were killed due to a  Passenger Bus - Three Wheeler Collision at Ehaliyagoda in Ratnapura-Colombo Main Road this morning according to the Police.The Passenger Bus was collided with the Three Wheeler during a traffic at the road it has been reported.

Three Passengers who were inside the Three Wheeler and the Driver were killed due to this accident.

A Sri Lankan Who Tried To Smuggle Rs.7.8 Million Worth Gold Was Arrested At The Air Port

A Sri Lankan National who tried to smuggle Gold worth Rs.7.8 million to the country by concealed in his trousers  was arrested yesterday(05) at Katunayake,Bandaranaike International Air Port according to Sri Lanka Customs.

The 49 year old smuggler who is a resident in Colombo Suburbs had arrived from Sarjah with a stock of gold weighing 1 Kilo Grammes and 562 grammes concealed in his trousers and strapped to legs the custom officers have said.

Government Reduced The Commodity Levy Imposed On Imported Potatoes And Big Anions

The special commodity levy imposed on imported potatoes and big anions has been reduced with effect from midnight tonight according to the Ministry Of Finance.

According to the reduction the levy imposed on imported potatoes has been reduced by Rs.25 per kilo gramme ,from Rs.55 to Rs.30 and the levy imposed on imported big anions has been reduced by Rs.20 per kilo gramme  ,from Rs.30 to Rs.10 .

The government has last month increased the commodity levy imposed on imported potatoes and big anions from Rs.15 and Rs.20 per kilo gramme respectively.

A No Confidance Motion Was Handed Over Against The Prime Minister

A no confidence motion against Prime Minister Ranuil Wikramasinha signed by 112 MP'S was handed over to the speaker chamal Rajapakshe last night by a group of Parliamentarians representing the main opposition United Peoples Freedom Alliance(UPFA).To hand over the motion to the speaker a group of UPFA Parliamentariens have visited Hambanthota (Southern Province)last night it has been reported.

The no confidence motion is due to be received by the secretary general of parliament dhammika dissanayake today with approval of the speaker according to opposition MP'S.

33 Bus And Train Stations Were Given Free WIF Fi

Under the government's programme of providing free Internet WI FI Facility to the public around 33 Bus and Train Stations throughout the country have been given Free Internet WI FI Facility up to now according to the Information And  Communication Technology Agency  (ICTA).

These bus and train stations with Free WI FI Facility are situated in cities like Colombo,Jaffn etc.

Former Housing Minister's Wife Shashi Weerasinha Was Questioned Over An Alleged Property Transaction

The Former Minister Wimal Weerawanshe's wife  Shashi Weerawanshe was questioned today(04) by the Police Financial Crimes Investigations Division (FCID)over an alleged property transaction.

She was scheduled to be appeared before the FCID on 26th of May to give a statement regarding an allegation leveled against her. But  she has  notified the division that she will not able to be there on that day due to a health problem..As Mrs.Weerawanshe was asked to appear before the crimes investigations Division this morning she came there with her husband Wimal Weererawnashe.

Shashi Weerawanshe was recently released on bail by the Colombo Magistrate Court after she was arrested and remanded over obtaining a fake diplomatic passport and national identity card.

An Unused Stock Of 45,000 metric tonnes Of Imported White Raw And Nadu Rice varieties found Stored In Warehouses Without Selling It

A stock of 45,000 Metric Tonnes of  imported White Raw Rice and Par Boiled Rice(Nadu) worth around Rs.3 billion have found stored in Sathosa Ware Houses for the past five months without selling it  as the demand for these rice varieties is zero according to the Sathosa sources.

The former Management of Lanka Sathosa Limited has imported 30,000 metric tonnes of White Raw Rice at a cost of Rs.1.6 billion from an Indian Company  and 15,000 metric tonnes of Par Boiled Rice at a cost of Rs.1.4 billion  from Bangaladesh during December last year Dr.Lokubalasuriya has stressed.

As the Sathosa is  receiving a good quality of White and Nadu Rice varieties from local farmers there's no need to import these rice from india and bangaldesh. she has stressed.

Around 6% Of Urban School Children Are Found As Overweight

A recently concluded survey has revealed that around 6% of the all school children in Urban Schools situated throughout the island are found as overweight.The majority of these overweight school children are suffering from the disease fatty liver which caused the enlargement of the liver according to Community Physician attach to the School Division of Family Health Bureau Dr.Ayesha Lokubalasuriya.

The  bad food habits like consuming food which contains higher amount of Starch,Sugar and Fat are the main cause of this overweight problem among st urban school children Dr.Lokubalasuriya has said.

Under the circular which issued for  the School Canteens throughout the island to restrict the selling of  sugary soft drinks and short eats in school canteens the selling of sugary soft drinks has down by 90% she has stated.

Imprisoned MP Sajin Vaas Has Been Further Remanded Until 17th Of June

The Imprisoned opposition MP Sajin Vaas Gunawardene who was arrested and remanded for allegedly misusing the vehicles belonging to the Presidential Secretariat has been further remanded until 17th of June by the Colombo Fort Magistrate Court today(03).

MP Sajin Vaas was produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate Court today.The Criminal Investigations Department(CID) has arrested him on 11th of May after recording a statement from him over the allegations leveled against him.

The MP was also charged for using bullet proof vehicle that used by the former president Mahinda Rajapakshe during the previous regime.

Parliament Adjourned Until 09th Of June -No Decision Has Taken Today On Appointing Representatives To Constitutional Council

The Parliament which met today(03) had failed to reach a final decision regarding appointing of three civil society representatives to the Constitutional Council.The special session of Parliament was conducted today in view of  reaching a final agreement regarding the appointing of Three Constitutional Council members.

However during the one and half hour long meeting of the Party Leaders held today at Parliament with the participation of speaker Chamal Rajapakshe ,no final decision has taken regarding the representatives  Parliament Sources said.

Due to this situation the speaker has adjourned Parliament until 09th of June.

Former President Rajapakshe Will Contest In The Forthcoming General Elections-His Media Spokesman

The Media Spokesman of the former President Mahinda Rajapakshe has said that the former president will contest in the forthcoming general elections either whether he   receives  the nominations from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party(SLFP) or not .

The Former President Rajapakshe is hoping to contest in the forthcoming general elections from the SLFP and if  he doesn't get the nominations from the party then he will be contesting from another party his media spokesman has said during an interview with British Broadcasting Cooperation (BBC).

The President Maithripala Sirisene has said to be refused to nominate the former president Rajapakshe as the SLFP'S Prime Ministerial Candidate for the forthcoming elections although several of the opposition parties belonging to the main opposition United Peoples Freedom Alliance(UPFA) made requests from the president to
do so.

A Person Possessing A Fake One Million Dollar Note Was Arrested In Colombo

The Special Task Force Officers  have arrested a  person possessing  a fake One Million Dollar Note yesterday (01)evening at  Welikada ,Rajagiriya (In Colombo District).The said person was arrested on information received by the Police.

The suspect is  a resident in Vavuniya(Northern Province) and due to be produced before the Colombo Magistrate Court.

Public Is Advised To Be On Alert On A Viral Eye Disease Spreading Most Parts Of The Country

The Ophthalmologists  are requesting the public to be on  alert on an Eye Disease known as "Viral Conjunctivitis"which  is spreading in mos parts of the country at present.Redness in Eyes, tearing and Scratching of the eyes are the main symptoms of this disease according to them.

A large number of patients suffering from this eye disease are daily receiving treatment through the  Colombo Eye Hospital and other government hospital  eye clinics throughput the country these days   it has been reported.The Ophthalmologists are advising the public to seek medical treatment immediately if someone has shown the symptoms given.

Nine Suspects Who Were Arrested Regarding Gang Raping Of The Kayets School Girl Were Remanded Until 15th Of June

All nine suspects who were arrested regarding the kidnapping,gang raping and murdering of a 18 year old School Girl in Kayets(Northern Province) have been further remanded until 15th of June by the Kayets  Magistrate today(01).The magistrate has ordered to remanded the suspects further after they were produced before the Kayets Magistrate Court today.

Meanwhile 43 out of the 47 persons who were arrested and remanded for  protesting unlawfully  in front of the Jaffna Court Complex  were also further remanded after they were produced before the  Court today.

Former First Lady Was Questioned By The Police Financial Crimes Investigations Division

The former first lady Shiranthi Rajapakshe who was summoned today(01) by the Police Financial Crimes Investigations Division has stated that state funds were not used in running 'Siriliya Saviya" Charity Organization chaired by her.She was asked to appear before the Division this morning to record  a statement regarding the  allegation leveled against her on  controversial  transactions of several bank accounts belonging to the said charity organization.


The statement of Former first lady is due to be recorded at Financial Crimes Investigations Division building at 9.30 a.m but due to the security reasons she was asked to come to another place to give the statement.A group of people has seen gathered in front of the investigations division building this morning to support Mrs.Rajapakshe.

During the questioning the former first lady has said that her charity organization received money through local and foreign donations and all the money has spent in transparent manner.
