Government Has Increased The Special Commodity Levy Imposed On Raw Sugar And White Sugar

The special commodity levy imposed on raw (Brown)sugar has been increased by Rs.15 per kilo gramme and imported white sugar by Rs.2 per kilo gramme with effect from today (16) the government has announced.

However the price of white sugar will remain as Rs.95 per Kilo Gramme the government has stated.Government has earlier reduced the special commodity levy imposed on white sugar and increased the levy imposed on raw sugar. As a result of this the local consumers are induced to consume more white sugar than raw sugar.

The consumption of sugar in Sri Lanka is 31 kilo grammes per person and due to this  Health Minister  has made a proposal to the Cabinet recently to increase the price of white sugar by considering the  increased number of Diabetic patients in Sri Lanka which opposed by many the Ministry of Health has announced.

The annual import of sugar in Sri Lanka is 650,000 metric tonnes which is  92 percent of the total local requirement and the annual sugar production  in Sri Lanka is 56,000 metric tonnes which is only 8 percent of the local requirement according to reports.

Government has earned a revanue of  Rs.19,500 million annually through the special commodity levy imposed on sugar it has been reported.
