Sri Lanka has made an encouraging progress on reducing the poverty to below 7% of the local population according to a new research finding revealed by a World Bank Group today(16).According to the new research finding the fall in poverty of the Sri Lankan Society is mainly due to the increased labor income as the local economy has shifted from less productive Agriculture towards the Industry and Service Sectors .
The research finding also shows although the poverty has decreased ,progress is uneven across gender,ethnicity and location.A large number of poor still living within or close to urban areas and there are considerably higher rates of Poverty prevails in North and East ,The Estate Sector and in Monaragala District the findings have revealed.
The Research Finding has also revealed that As around 40% of the local population still earn less than Rs.225 daily ,many people in the society are at risk of falling back to poverty .
