President Maithripala Sirisena is due to submit a Cabinet Proposal to abolish the Executive Presidency and to establish a New Electoral System at the Cabinet Meeting scheduled to be held tomorrow(18).According to the President the Cabinet Paper due to be submitted to the Cabinet tomorrow suggesting to abolish Executive Presidency in the country and transfer it's powers to the Parliament.
After named as the Presidential Candidate of Common Opposition during last January's Presidential Election President Maithripala Sirisena has signed a memorandum of understanding with United National Party and other opposition parties belonging to Common Opposition in which he agreed to abolish the Executive Presidency,Establishing a New Electoral System and to amend the 18th Constitution .
After as Elected as Executive President he has amended some powers vested to Executive Presidency through the 19th Amendment.The President also pledged at the Funeral of Late Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero held on last Thursday he will abolish the Executive Presidency soon as it was one of the requests late thero made to the current government.
The Executive Presidency established through the 1978 Constitution.
