Police Inspector And A Constable Attach To Ahungalla Police Got Remanded For Accepting A Bribe

A Police Inspector and a Constable attach to Ahungalla(Southern Province) Police have been arrested and  remanded until 21st of April due to taken a Rs.5000 bribe from a person .

The Officers of the Bribery Commission have yesterday (08) arrested the said Police Inspector and the Constable while accepting the bribe .After produced before the Balapitiya Magistrate Court they were ordered to remand until 21st of April.

Supreme Court Confirmed 19Th Amendment Is Consistent With Constituiton -Speaker

The Speaker Chamal Rajapakshe has today(09) informed the Parliament that Supreme Court has confirmed proposed 19th Amendment is consistent with the constitution and certain  sections in the Amendment required a referendum to approve .

As soon as the speaker informed the Supreme Court's decision on 19th Amendment Prime Minister Ranil Wikramasinha has told the Parliament that the government will omit the sections which require a referendum.

The Supreme Court gave it's decision after examining 19 petitions filed against the 19th Amendment.

Meanwhile the  President Maithripala Sirisena  has announced today that the draft bill on 19th Amendment will be presented to the Parliament on 20th of April and soon after it got passed the Parliament will be dissolved to hold  a fresh general elections.However the main  opposition Sri Lanka Freedom Party(SLFP) has stated that they will  backing  the government to pass the draft bill only if the new electoral reforms included in the bill.The new general elections should be held under a new electoral system the SLFP has stated.

Sathosa Has Earned A Record Breaking Revenue During March This Year

The State owned Lanka Sathosa Limited has earned a record breaking Rs.3.2 billion as revenue on  March this year by selling consumer goods according to the Sathosa Sources.When compared to March last year(2014) the  revenue in March this year has increased by Rs.1 billion the sources have added.

During March last year Sathosa has earned Rs.2.2 Billion as  revenue. Sathosa Chairman Mr.Kiran Atapattu has told  this writer today that on 06th of April alone the revenue earned by Sathosa was topped Rs.160 million which was the highest revenue earned during a single day.The revenue in March has increased due to the dedication and commitment of the Sathosa Staff he has said.

Main Opposition Party SLFP To Oppose The 19th Amendment If Electoral Reforms Are Not Included

The main opposition  Sri Lanka Freedom Party(SLFP) has said today(08) that the Party will only supporting the government to pass the draft bill on 19th Amendment  if the electoral reforms too included in the bill .

Addressing the Media in Colombo today (08) the General Secretary Of The Sri Lanka Freedom Party MP Anura Priyadarshana Yapa has said that if the government tries to pass the 19th amendment without the new electoral reforms it will not getting the support of SLFP to pass the draft bill.

The Draft Bill on 19th amendment with constitutional reforms which was approved by the Cabinet has been tabled in the Parliament recently.

"As the Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya has already prepared a report on the proposed electoral reforms there's no reason for the government to delay of adding electoral reforms to the  19th amendment" SLFP General Secretary has said.

MP Anura Priyadarshana Yapa has also said that although 26 SLFP MP's have been accepted ministerial portfolios in the government recently still the Opposition is having  two third majority in the Parliament.

Chief Prelate Of Asgiriya Chapter Has Passed Away

The most venerable Aggamahapanditha Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Rathanapala Maha Thero who is the chief prelate of Asgiriya Chapter of the Siyam Nikaya section has passed away while receiving medical treatment at Private Hospital in Singapore.The Venerable Thero had admitted to the hospital in critical condition.

A Court Order Was Taken To Prevent Five Persons Including A MP Leaving The Country

The Police have taken a court order by preventing  five persons including MP Tiran Allas from leaving the country on charges of financial fraud.MP Tiran Allas and five others were charged on involved in financial fraud in the year 2006 during the construction of houses for the Tsunami Victims in North and Eastern Provinces.

However addressing a media conference in Colombo today MP Allas had refused the charges leveled against him.One person is behind these accusations He has said.

Speaker Chamal Rajapakshe Has Delayed Announcing The Opposition Leader

The Speaker Chamal Rajapakshe has today(07) informed the Parliament that he is still not decided who will be appointed as the Opposition Leader as there is a dispute regarding that post.He has also told that he is still studying on the issue and will announced  the decision soon.The Speaker was due to be announced his decision on the Opposition Leader post today.

As the number of MP'S representing the United Peoples Freedom Alliance(UPFA) including the Sri Lanka Freedom Party(SLFP) have been accepted Ministerial Portfolios of the government recently, several opposition
parties are claiming that  the Opposition Leader Post should be given to their parties by replacing  the current Opposition Leader representing United Peoples Freedom Alliance MP Nimal Siripala De Silva.

Meanwhile a letter said to be signed by over 60 UPFA MP'S requesting to appoint one of their MP'S Dinesh Gunewardene as the Opposition Leader was handed over to the Speaker this morning.

Government's Proposal To Issue Rs.400 Million Treasury Bills Has Been Defeated At The Parliament

In side The Parliament 
The proposal tabled by the Finance Minister Ravi Karaunanayake to issue Rs.400 million worth treasury bills to increase the government revenue has been defeated today(07) at the Parliament with majority of 21 votes.52 MP's have been voted against the proposal while only 31 MP's have voted in favor of it.

The government has expected to increase it's revenue through the issuing of treasury bills and increasing local borrowings as the revenue has  decreased when comparing to the government's expenditure .Due to the recent pay hikes offered to the government workers and price reduction of several essential goods government revenue has been decreased according to the government sources.

As the opposition is stronger in the Parliament than the government the defeating of the said proposal has become a big blow to the government at the time it search the ways to increase revanue.

Doctors Have Issued A Warning To The Public On Illnesses Related To High Temperature

Local Doctors have issued a  warning  today (06) to the Public on  Skin related illnesses like Skin Cancers and Burns which may have occur as there's an unprecedented hot temperatures prevails  during   day time as a result of the Sun  moving directly overhead of Sri Lanka .

The Colombo Chief Medical Officer Dr.Ruwan Wijemuni has said that the  people especially the small children and pregnant mothers should avoid expose  their skin  to the sun rays these days.People should drink more water to avoid possible dehydration as a result of high temperatures and should wear cotton cloths instead of silk and artificial  cloths with long sleeves to avoid exposing the  skin to the sun rays  he has stressed.

The sportsmen and women who are engage in long term sports activities during the day time  should be aware on the situation as they may have suffer from heat stroke which cause due to the high temperatures Dr.Wijemuni has  said.People should also use an umbrella or an Ultra Violet Ray Cut Sun Glasses to avoid eyes getting exposed to the sun rays he has further said.

Bhutanese Prime Minister To Visit Sri Lanka On Thursday

The Prime Minister of Kingdom Of Bhutan Tshering Tobay is due to arrive  Sri Lanka on this Thursday for a three day official visit.During the  visit he  is due to hold talks with Sri Lankan Government Officials .

General Manager Of The State Owned Bank Of Ceylon Was Suspended With Immediate Effect

The General Manger Of State owned ,Bank Of Ceylon D.M Gunasekere has been suspended with immediate effect on charges of misusing power and corruption the Ministry Of Finance has announced today(06).

According to the Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake the suspended General Manager was alleged as involved in an opening of a branch of  Bank Of Ceylon in one of the fastest growing tax heavens in the  world Seychelles Islands in  2011 without a prior permission of  Management of the Bank Of Ceylon.The previous government was behind this opening the minister has stressed.

Sri Lanka's Tourist Arrivals Had Risen By 18% In This March Compared To The March Last Year

According to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) Tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka had risen by 18% in March this  year when comparing to the March last year (2014).In overall 157,051 tourists have arrived in the island this March while 133,048 Tourists have been arrived March last year.

Chinese Tourists are remained as the second largest source of Tourists arrived in the island and in this March Chinese Tourist Arrivals have increased by 84.5 % when comparing to the Chinese Arrivals in March Last Year ,Tourism Development Authority has said.53,135 Chinese Tourists have been arrived in the Country this March when comparing the Chinese Arrivals last March numbering 28,798 .

According to the latest Report issued on Tourist Arrivals in Sri Lanka a total number of 478,838 Tourists had arrived in the country during first three months this year when compared to the 421,50
1 Tourist Arrivals reported in the first three months of last year.

Government To Set Up A Welfare Center To Uplift The Life Of War Affected Widows In North

The government has decided to set up a welfare center at Kilinochchi District in the Northern Province to assist   thousands of widows who affected due to the three decade old war there.There are around 50,000 families in the Northern Province headed by women and these families are facing numerous difficulties when providing food,education and accommodation needs of their children the Prime Minister's Office has said.

The new welfare center planning to set up will be called as the "National Center For the Upliftments Of The Household" and it  will facilitate thousand of widows in the north who have lost their spouses during the war the Prime Minister's Office has said in a statement.

Sri Lankan President Arrived Pakistan For A Three Day Official Visit

President Maithripala Sirisena had arrived Pakistan today (05) for a three day official visit.President Sirisena was greeted by Sindh State Chief Minister Sayed Qaim Ali Shah when he arrived the Karachchi International Air Port this evening.

Later President flew to Islamabad and Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Shariff had greeted him at the Air Port.Sri Lankan President  was accompanied by  Ministers Mangala Samaraweera,A.H.M Fowzie and Rishard Baduideen .

President Sirisena is due to hold bi lateral talks with Pakistani Premier Nawaz Shariff and President Mamnoon Hussain on Monday .He is also due to sign number of memorandums of understanding and agreements in various fields with Pakistani counterparts following the talks..

Up Country Train Service Disrupted Due To A Derailment

Due to the derailment of a fuel transport train which traveled from  nawalapitiya to hatton this morning the train service of the up country rail track has been disrupted according to the main railway control room .

The fuel transport train which traveled to Hatton had derailed near the  Watawala Railway Station and two fuel tanks had faced the derailment it has been reported.The railways department is currently trying to restore the  train service normalcy.

An Electrically Powered Elevator To Be Installed At Historical Sigiriya Rock Fortress

An elevator powered by Electricity is due to be installed at historical Sigiriya Rock Fortress soon  without harming it's cultural values and attractiveness according to the Director General Of Archaeology Department Dr.Senerath Dissanayake.

The main purpose  of installing an elevator at Sigiriya Rock Fortress is to facilitate disabled and elderly people who are not able to climb the rock fortress Dr.Dissanayake has said.

The government is planning  to modernize  the Sigiriya which is known as the most visited historical site in Sri Lanka in a bid to attract more tourists  to the historical site he has stressed .

Sun To Be Going Directly Over Sri Lanka From Today (05) Up To 15th Of April

The Meteorology Department has announced that the Sun will be going directly over Sri Lanka from today(05) up to 15th of April .The nearest towns which are going to be affects today due to the over heading of the Sun are Koggala,Nakulugamuwa and Denipitiya at 12.13 noon the met department has said.

Showers or thunder showers will occur in most parts of the Island during evenings these days and south -western coastal areas will experience showers during the mornings too the  met department has further said.

Air Port Custom Officers Have Arrested A Man Who Tried To Leave The Country With A Stock Of Wallapatta Chips

The Air Port Custom Officers have today (04) arrested a Sri Lankan National who had attempted to leave the country with Rs.9.6 million worth Wallapatta Chips stored in his baggage.

The 40 year old Colombo Resident had been arrested by the custom officers while trying to fly to Dubai around 4.30 a.m today with the chips of Wallapatta taken from an endemic plant it has been reported.According to the customs 19.29 Kilo Grammes of Wallapatta Chips have been found concealed in his baggage.The suspect was fined  in a sum of Rs.150,000 and the stock of wallaptta was forfeited   customs have said.

Wallaptta is an essential ingredient using to make an expensive colognes.
