Price Of A Cigarette Has Been Increased By Seven Rupees

The price of a Cigarette has been increased by Rs.7 with effect from midnight last night according to the Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake.

The Cabinet has last week approved a proposal to impose a 15% VAT(value added tax) on Cigarettes and to increase the production tax imposed on Cigarette  by Rs.5.

In view of reducing  the smoking habit of  locals Cabinet has also approved a proposal to increase the Cess Tax imposed on imported Beedi(Locally made Cigarettes) Leaves from Rs.2000 to Rs.3000.
