The supreme court has today(11) issued an interim order by suspending the increase of value added tax(VAT).
Supreme Court has issued the order after considering a petition filed by National Freedom Front leader MP Wimal Weerawansha seeking a court order to revoke the decision on increasing VAT.
The petition has sought a court interim order to prevent relevant authorities from ordering the public to pay VAT and it also argued that parliament approval is must before the VAT is increased.
Government has increased VAT on certain goods and services by 4% with effect from 02nd of May 2016.
