IUSF Convener And 56 Others Arrested During A Protest

 Poice had arrested the convener of the Inter University Students Federation (IUSF)Wasantha Mudalige and 56 others including 48 Buddhist priest students attached to the Inter University Bhikku Students Federation when they were protesting in front of the Education Minister's office at the Education Ministry premises

The protesters had staged a peotest campaign in front of the Education Minister's office  against the Police attack on Satyagraha campaign held yestetday (22) at the Buddhist and Pali university in Pitipana area(Western Province).

Protesters wanted to open the Buddhist and Pali university which was closed two months back .

Five Pesons Had Been Arrested Over Robbery At Indian Visa center

 Police have detained five persons over stealing a laptop and DVR Mechine from the visa center attached to the Indian embassy in Colombo on  14th of February .


All the suspects are residents of Colombo suburbs and a 63 year old female is also among those suspects Police Media Spokesman has stated.The stolen Laptop was found from a canal at Kirulapona area according to the Police.

UNP Abolished Party Membership Of 1137 Councillors

 The United National Party (UNP) had abolished the Party  membership of 1137 Local government Councillors elected from the Party over supporting other parties .


The Central Committee of the UNP which met today(21) has unanimously decided to abolish the party membership of these local Councillors elected to 341 Municipal/Urban councils  and Pradesheeya Sabhas in 2018.These councillors had already handed over nominations for the forthcoming local government elections from other political parties.

Elections Commission To Submit A Special Motion To Supreme Court Tomorrow (20) Regarding Difficulties

The Elections Commission is due to submit a special motion to the Supreme Court tomorrow(20) explaining   that there's no  sufficient support from the relevant factions to hold forthcoming local government elections Professor Ratnajeevan Hoole: The Election Commission Believes the President  Violated the Constitution – Groundviews

The Elections Commission had recently pledged the Supreme Court that it will conduct the Elections as scheduled and through this motion  expecting to explain the obstacles facing by the Commission to fulfill that pledge .Through this motion the Elections commission is due to explain the difficulties it is facing like inadequate funds ,inability to print the required ballot papers by government press and inadequate transport facilities etc to hold the elections .

The Ministry of Finance last Friday (17) informed the National Elections Commission that providing funds for the forthcoming local government elections will be  difficult due to the current economic crisis .
