Navy Have Arrested Five Local Fishermen Who Were Engaged in Illegal Fishing At Mannar.

Sri Lanka Navy have arrested five local fishermen who were engaged in illegal  fishing  by using banned fishing nets  and explosives in the seas off southern bar of Mannar(Northern Province).

Navy have taken into custody four unauthorized  fishing nets ,A dinghy boat,four pairs of diving fins and 550 Kilo Grammes of Fish along with the fishermen.

The arrested fishermen along with the equipment and fish were handed over to the assistant director of fidheries in mannar for future course of action.


Health Ministry To Introduce Health Pictorial Warnings For Local Tobacco Products Beedi And Cigars

Ministry Of  Health,Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine is considering to print health pictorial warnings on wrappers of altetnative tobacco products "Beedi" and "Cigars"(Suruttu) as done on Cigarette Packets the Director General Of Health Services Dr.Palitha Mahipala has stated.

"As Beedi and Cigars too harmful for human health there should be a plan to print health pictorial warnings on these products as well "Dr.Mahipala stressed.

The Ministry Of Health has introduced a  health pictorial  warnings For Cigarette Packets to print 80%  of it's  surface.

Cabinet had recently approved a proposal to increase the ses tax imposed on the   paper used to wrap Beedi from Rs.2000 to Rs3000 it has been revealed.

Police Have Arrested Six Suspects Believed To Be "Ava" Crimes Gang Members In Jaffna

Police have arrested six suspects believed to be the members of "Ava" Crimes Gang which have  terrorized in some areas in Jaffna.

Four of the suspects were arrested yesterday (05) and two were arrested today (06) according to the Police.

A group of Police Officers attached to the Crimes Investigations Department (CID) in  Colombo who are currently in Jaffna to carry out search opearations to arrest "Ava" group members had arrested these suspects with the assistance of Jaffna Police.


President Sirisena Left For India To Attend A Two Day International Conference

President Maithripala Sirisena had left for India this evening to attend a two day International Conference in Noida at Gautham Budh Nagar District ,organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding framework convention on tobacco control.

President Sirisena is due to deliver a special speech at the inauguration of the Conference tomorrow (07) highlighting the need to tightening the tobacco control meassures.

Around 180 countries and international organizations like European Union  are due to participate in the conference .

During his Indian visit President Sirisena expects to meet Indian President Pranab Mukarjee this evening and hald talks .President is due to return to the country tomorrow evening.


Sri Lankan Airlines To Recruit Many Of The Terminated Mihin Lanka Airlines Staff To It's Staff

National Carrier Sri Lankan Airlines  has decided to recruit many of the employees attached to the terminated Budget Carrier Airlines  "Mihin Lanka ' which stopped all it"s business operations with effect  from. 31st of  October the Air Lines has announced.

Accordingly Sri Lankan Airlines  has already recruited  two batches comprising of more than fifty young cabin crew members  of former  Mihin Lanka Airlines to it"s staff .These cabin crew members have been issued   their appointment letters recently at Katunayake.

Those Mihin Lanka Employees who not received the opportunity to serve Sri Lankan Airlines will be provided of Service Severance Package according to the specified Government Guidelines.

Government  has earlier taken a policy decision to terminate Mihin Lanka  Airlines due to  it"s income loss .

Accordingly Sri Lankan Airlines will cover all 10 flying routes operated by Mihin Lanka as full service operations it has been announced.
