Elections Commissioner Requested Not To Sell Sunday Newspapers Yesterday And Today Due To Political Ads

The Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya has yesterday(16)requested the Acting Secretary to the Ministry Of Media to avoid selling any of the Sunday Papers yesterday(16) and today(17) due to the political advertisements related to today's election published in those papers.

The election campaigning for  today's Parliamentary Election was ended at midnight  Last Friday.Due to this situation the News Paper Organizations here have released their Sinhala/English and Tamil Sunday Papers to the market on last Friday .

However as those Sunday Papers have been in the paper stalls both Saturday and Sunday as well the Elections Commissioner has made a request from the acting secretary to the Media Ministry  Boralessa to instruct the newspaper organizations not to sell those papers on yesterday and today.

Sri Lankan Voters To Cast Their Vote At The Parliamentary Election Scheduled To Be Held Tomorrow (17)

Sri Lankan Voters numbering 150,44490 are due to cast their vote tomorrow(17) at the Parliamentary Election to be held to elect 194 members to the Parliament .

According to the Elections Secretariat 6151 candidates are contesting in this election to secure a Parliamentary Seat and out of them 550 are female candidates.

Eligible Voters are due to cast their vote from 7 a.m to 4 p.m tomorrow at 12,314 polling  centers set up throughout the Island.The Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya has requested the voters to cast their votes as early as possible during the given time and carry the official Ballot Card along with a valid Identity Card with them to the polling center.

According to the Elections Commissioner the Ballot Boxes and Ballot Papers were  transported to the Polling Centers situated throughout the island by this evening.

The Governing United National Party(UNP),United Peoples Freedom Alliance(UPFA) and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna(JVP) are the main parties contesting for the election.

Two Were Killed And Five Injured Due To A Van Crash In Jaffna

Two persons were killed and five others injured when the Van they traveled in Crashed on to a wall at Kodikamam in Jaffna today(16).

The crashed Van was travelling from Katunayake to Jaffna at the time of the accident according to the Police.The injured were admitted to Jaffna Teaching Hospital.The driver was among the deceased Police have said.

The All Ceylon Health Services Union has requested the Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya to take a legal  action   against the Administration of Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital and some employees of the hospital who were illegally campaigned for a leading candidate of the ruling United National Party by violating Election Laws.

In a letter sent to the Elections Commissioner the President Of All Ceylon Health Services Union Samantha Koralearachchi has revealed  that besides openly campaigning for the said candidate the administration of Jayawardenepura Hospital has illegally recruited new ward attendants to the hospital after  Dissolved Of Parliament which was
clearly violated the election laws.

Around 63,000 Police Personal To Be Deployed For Election Duty On Monday -Inspector General Of Police

Around 63,000 Police Personal are due to be deployed in Election Duty during the Parliamentary Election scheduled to be held on this Monday(17) according to the Inspector General Of Police (IGP)N.K Ilangakoon.

The Police Special Task Force(STF) and Civil Defense Force will assist the police to provide security during the election the IGP has said.

The Police Personal,STF and Civil Defense Force  will provide security to  Election Centers,Counting Centers and will carryout the duties like patrolling and search operations at check points he has stressed.,

Public Allow To Travel Free Of Charge For Twelve Hours In Express Highways On Election Day

The Government has decided not to charge any fee from commuters travelling through   All Express Highways in the Country on Election Day(Monday the 17th of August) for 12 hours from 6 a.m to 6 p.m .

This facility will be   provided to facilitate the Public who are travelling outstation areas to vote at the Parliamentary Election scheduled to be held on Monday according to Ministry Of Highways And Investment Promotion.

Police Have Arrested Three Suspects Along With Illegal Ballot Papers,Election Handbills And Political Stickers

The Police have today(15) arrested three suspects who were transporting 1324 Illegal Model Ballot Papers ,323 Election Bills and 1482 small Political Stickers from Three Wheeler at Thalthuoya Area.The suspects  were arrested when the three wheeler they traveled in was checked at a checkpoint in between   Kandahandiya to Galaha Area.

Police have also seized the Three Wheeler which the Ballot Papers and other materials were transported.

An European Female With 5.5 Killo Grammes Of Cocaine Has Been Arrested At Katunayake Air Port

The Air Port Custom Officers have yesterday(14) arrested an European Female with 12 packets of Narcotic Cocaine worth around Rs.85 Million at the Katunayake Bandaranaike International Air Port .

The Packets containing 5.578 Kilo Grammes of Cocaine were concealed inside the covers of story books and fax rolls  that  female has carried with her according to the Custom Officers.

The female who arrived Katunayake International  Air Port from Peru through an Emirates Flight has planned  to fly Cambodia via Colombo and Kuala Lampur at the time of her arrest.

President Sirisene Sacked The Secretaries Of UPFA And SLFP -Also Suspended Their SLFP Membership

The Colombo District Court has issued an enjoining order this evening per the request of President Maithripala Sirisene preventing Susil Premjayantha and Anura Priyadarshana Yapa performing duties as General Secretaries of United Peoples Freedom Alliance(UPFA) and Sri Lanka Freedom Party(SLFP) receptively until 28th of August.

Besides the Court Order ,President Sirisena as the Chairman of  Sri Lanka Freedom Party(SLFP) suspended the membership of both secretaries according to powers vested him through the Party's Constitution.

Both Susil Premjayantha and Anura Priyadarshana Yapa  conducted a press briefing this morning and announced that six out of seven senior SLFP Politicians that President has named for Prime Minister's Post if the UPFA wins the forthcoming election have decided not to accept the premier post.They also requested the President to appoint former President Mahinda Rajapaksha as the prime minister if UPFA wins the election.

As the both secretaries were acted against his decision President Sirisene has got a court order to dysfunction the duties of both secretaries of UPFA and SFP and appointed Professor Vishwa Warnapala and Duminda Disanayake as the acting secretaries of  UPFA and SLFP with immediate effect

According to the Political Critics the latest developments which clearly divided the SLFP in to two groups in the wake of forthcoming election it will affect the vote base of SLFP and UPFA severely .

Seven Senior UPFA Politicians have rejected the President's Offer To Accept The Prime Minister Post

By reacting to the letter sent by President Maithripala Sirisene to former president Mahinda Rajapakshe yesterday by urging that the president will be never appointed former president as the prime minister if the United Peoples Freedom Alliance(UPFA) wins the forthcoming election,Both the Senior politician of Sri Lanka Freedom Party(SLFP) John Seneviratne and the UPFA Secretary Susil Premjayantha have said today(14) that there's no other suitable person to hold Prime Minister's Post of the next government other than former president rajapakshe.

Addressing the media today (14) in Colombo ,Senior Politician John Seneviratne has said that the seven senior politicians that president has been named as the suitable candidate for prime minister ship have decided not to accept the prime minister's post.

According to  secretary to the UPFA Susil Premajayantha all party leaders of UPFA have sent a letter with their signatures to the President  indicating that if UPFA wins former president rajapakshe  should be appointed as the  prime  Minister'

Election Campaigning Activities Of Parliamentary Election To Be Closed At Midnight Tonight

The election campaigning for the Parliamentary Election scheduled to be held on 17th of August (Monday) will be ended at 12 in the midnight tonight .

Engaging  in any election campaign activity after midnight tonight will be illegal according to the Election Secretariat.

As the deadline for campaigning nears the two main parties contesting for the forthcoming election the United National Party(UNP) and United Peoples Freedom Alliance(UPFA) are preparing to conduct their final  rallies which are scheduled to be held in Maradana(In Colombo) and in Kurunagala(In North Western Province) respectively.

The final rally of the UNP will be held under the patronage of it's leader Prime Minister Ranil Wikaramasinghe at Maradana tonight and the last rally of UPFA'S election campaign is scheduled to be held at Kurunagala with the participation of their campaign leader the former president mahinda rajapakshe.

The final rally of the leftist Janatha Wimukthi Peramuna(JVP) is due to be held at Aluthkade Kunction in Colombo this evening under the patronage of it's leader Anura Kuamra Dissanayake.

Colombo High Court Judge Has Sentenced A Former Army Major Life Imprisonment For Possessing Heroin

The Colombo High Court Judge Lalith Jayasuriya has today(13) sentenced a former Army Major who  was found guilty of possession of  Six Kilo Grammes Of Heroin   a life imprisonment .

By announcing the life imprisonment sentence for the former Army General the Colombo High Court Judge has stated that although the offense of processing a  large haul of narcotics warranted the Death Sentence he has given life imprisonment sentence as the death sentence had been confined only to the statutory books.

Police Have Arrested 700 Persons In Connection Of Violating Election Laws

The Police have so far  arrested 700 persons in connection of violating election laws according to the Department Of Police.

Out of these persons 546 were arrested during 244 raids carried out throughout the island by  Police Teams and 154 were arrested per the complaints made by public  the Department has announced.

Through an urgent letter President Maithripala Sirisesna has today(13) requested the former president who is contesting for the forthcoming parliamentary election from United Peoples Freedom Alliance  not to create ethnic disharmony  during the election campaign.

The President has also urged if the United Peoples Freedom Alliance(UPFA) chaired by him has wins a majority of 113 seats in Parliament at the forthcoming election he as the Executive President and the chairman of UPFA will name  one of the seven senior recognized politicians of  UPFA as the Prime Minister and will not name former president to the post.

The President has also named seven senior politicians of UPFA including former speaker of the Parliament and eldest brother of former president Rajapakshe ,Chamal Rajapakshe as potential candidates for the post of Prime Minister.

In his strongly worded letter sent to the former President Rajapakshe ,President Sirisene has accused former president of fueling communal hatred.

Commonwealth Election Observers Have Stated That Forthcoming Election Seems To Be Cleaner Than Presidential Election

The forthcoming Sri Lankan Parliamentary Election seems to be cleaner then the Presidential Election held on 08th of January as only few election law violations had been reported so far according to the chairman of the Commonwealth Election Observers Team the former President of Malta Dr.George Abela.


The head of the Commonwealth Observers has said during a press briefing held in Colombo today (12) that they will expect the government to conduct a democratic election which gives voters a chance to elect suitable candidates to the Parliament .
