Jaffna International Airport To Be Opened On 17th Of October

The newly constructed Jaffna International Airport in Palali is scheduled to be inaugurated on 17 th of October (Thursday )under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wikramasinghe and  President Maithripala Sirisena it has been announced.

ATR-72 Aircraft of Alliance Air the subisidary of Air India carrying 70 passangers is scheduled to be arrived in Jaffna Airport in the inauguration day .

Alliance Air has already annoumced it will opetate three flights a week to Jaffna International Airport from destinations in India including Chennai .
The Jaffna Interntional Airport earlier known as Palali Airport has been renamed and expanded its facilities which began on 05 th of July after receiving Cabinet approval .

The Airport runway has been expanded under the phase one from 950 meters to 1400 meters and it will be expanded  to 2300 meters under the phase two according to sources .

The Airport will operate direct  flights to  India initially .Minister of Civil Aviation and Transport Arjuna who had submitted the cabinet paper to expand the Palali Airport towards   Jaffna International Airport had observed the progress of the work recently it has been reported .

Meanwhile Sri Lanka now have five International Airports namely Katunayaka International Airport,Jaffna International Airport ,Batticaloa International Airport ,Colombo Rathmalana International Airport and Mattala International Airport .
