A pilot project on releasing of the newly invented
"Wolbachia "bacteria injected "Aedis Egypti "dengue mosquitoes to the enviornment in view of preventing the spreading of Dengue Virus ,scheduled to be implemented in three highly dengue risk areas in Colombo namely District -1 of Colombo Urban Council ,Kolonnawa and Nugegoda areas under the financial aid of Australian government.
A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Health Ministry Secretary Janaka Sugathadasa and Australian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Bryce Hutchesson in this regard yesterday (07)at the Ministry Of Health.
Monash University of Australia had invented the "Wolbachia"bacteria to control the spreading of Dengue Virus."Wolbachia" bacteria injected Dengue mosquitoes were succesfully released to the enviornment in many countries including Australia,Vietnam ,Indonesia,Brazil and Colombia.
The Attorney General had approved the MOU that signed between health ministry and Australian Embassy.
