Sri Lanka Navy have yesterday (23)arrested 22 local
fishermen while engaging in illegal fishing by using banned nets and explosives in Sri Lankan seas off the coasts of Silawathurai and Mannar(Northern Province).
Accordingly Navy Personal have arrested 16 local fishermen while engaging in illegal fishing practices along with 3 dinghi boats,4 pairs of diving fins ,10 oxygen cylinders,4 diving masks and 2 GPS units .
The arrested local fishermen and equipment were handed over to the fisheries inspector in Mannar for future course of action.
During another raid 6 local fishermen were arrested while engaging in illegal fishing practices by using explosives in the seas off Mannar coast along with a dinghy boat 5 pairs of diving fins ,5 diving masks and 610 kilo grammes of fish .these fishermen along with the explosives and equipment were handed over to the fisheries director in Mannar .
