Pressident Maithripala Sirisene has said today(18) he expects to implement the Capital Punishment from next year if the Parliament gives the consent.Under the 1978 constitution the Executive President can implement the capital punishment and all he needs to do is put his signature to approve it.However President Sirisene has said that he wants the opinion of legislators when implementing the capital punishment.
President while addressing a meeting held today at Galle(Southern Sri Lanka) has stressed that if he put his signature to implement capital punishment without getting parliament approval human rights groups will intervene the scene on humanitarian grounds,
President's remarks on capital punishment came amidst society 's appeal to implement it to prevent child rapes .President has stated the many in the society were shocked due to the murder of the five year old girl Seya Sadewmini In Gampaha District and wants to do justice for her by implementing capital punishment .
