Suicide Attempts Are On The Increase

Although Suicide deaths are being
decreased in Sri Lanka suicide attempts are on the increase according to the Consultant Phyciatrist attached to the Colombo National Hospital Dr.Pushpa Ranasinghe.

Around 15.14 Suicides per 100,000 population  had been reported from Sri Lanka last year and majority of them around 78 percent were males She has stressed.

Addressing a Media briefing on World Mental Health Day held at Health Promotions Bureau in Colombo last morning  (03)Dr.Ranasinghe has stressed that the reasons caused for 37 percent of the  Suicides are not known .

Around 93,000 lives had been saved within the period 1995-2005 due to banning of the use of  key pesticides in Sri Lanka which caused many Suicides in the past she has revealed.

World Mental Health Day falls on 10th of October and the theme of this year is Mental Health promotion -Suicide prevention .

Around 23,000 Suffering From Cancer Detected Annually In Sri Lanka

Around 23,000 persons suffering from Cancer is being detected in Sri Lanka annually with  around 13,000 Cancer deaths according to the Consultant Community physician attached to National Cancer Control Programme Dr.Suraj Perera.

Accordingly around 2100 suffering from Oral cancers which is highest among local males and around 3500 with BreaSt Cancer which is highest among females are being detected annually Dr.Perera has stressed.

Cancers can be cured by diagnosing Early  he has stated .

A Textile Shop In Hatton Completely Destroyed Due To A Fire

A Textile shop at Dunbar street in
Hatton had been completely destroyed due to a sudden fire erupted in the upstairs of the shop last night  (03).

A worker attached to Hatton -DiKoya Urban Council had been injured whilst dousing the fire and admitted to DiKoya Base Hospital for treatment .

Another trader had seen the  smoke of the fire  and informed it to the Hatton Police and Police officers along with the workers of the Hatton -DiKoya Urban Council had broken the doors of the shop and managed to control the spreading of the fire .

Police have suspected  an Electric leak might have caused the fire .The loss incurred due to the fire has not yet been estimated.  

A Person.Was Arrested With Stocks Of Kerala And Local Cannabis

Western Naval Command along with Puttalam Police have arrested a 58 year old person whilst transporting 1.087 Grammes of Kerala Cannabis and 7.900 Grammes of Local Cannabis in a Motor Car at Karabay Junction in Palavi ,Puttalam yesterday (03).

The suspect who is a resident of Arachchikattuwa   area in Puttalam had been arrested at the Road block in Karabay Junction during a joint search operation carried out there .

The suspect along with the stock of Kerala and local Cannabis  along with the Motor Car had been handed over to the Puttalam. Police for further investigations .
