The Landmark judgment has been given by the Supreme court after taking into consideration two Fundemental rights petitions filed by Professor Mahim Mendis and the former Chairman of the SriLanka,Chamber of Commerce Chandra,Jayaratne requesting to take An action against those who are responsible for the Current Economic crisis of the country.Accordingly the The judge panel of the Supreme Court headed by the Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya had announced that the former Presidents Mahinda Rajapakshe ,Gotabaya Rajapakshe ,Former Minister Basil Rajapakshe ,The Monetary Board of SriLanka Central Bank ,Former governors of the Central Bank Ajith Nivad Cabral,Professor W.D Lakshman the member of Central Bank Monetrary Committee Samantha Kumarasinghe,Former Secretary to the President P.B Jayasundare ,Former Secretary to the Ministry of Finance S.R Atygalle were responsible for creating current economic crisis and failed to take any action to resolve it.
The Judge panel however dismissed the two fundemental rights petitions filed by the petitionrs citing they were expired and ordered the respondents to pay Rs.150,000 each to the petitioners as legal costs without ordering respondents to pay compensations.for the damage they have done to the economy.
The Judge panel has also stated that the respondents were directly responsible for breaking the trust of the public and violating the people's fundemental rights .
