Several Acres Of Land And Trees Destroyed Due To A Fire At Moragahakanda Reserve

A Sudden fire erupted in Moragahakanda Reservoir reserve last evening  (15) had destroyed several Acres of land and valuable old trees according to sources .

Accordingly valuable trees around 100 years old had been destroyed due to the fire and many rare animal species live in the reserve  too had been affected due to the fire which lasted for several hours.

The fire had been  doused later , however strong winds had prevented the dousing of the fire it has been revealed.

Burning of forests had caused this fire according to authorities.

Twelve Villages Are Being Visible Due To The Reduced Water Levels Of Moragahakanda Reservoir

Around 12 villages at Naula area in Matale which had been submerged due to the Morgahakande Reservoir ,are being visible these days due to reduced   water capacity of Moragahakanda Reservoir as a result of releasing it's water to other reservoirs and paddy fields in the area it has been reported.

Due to the dry weather prevailing in the area the water of the Moragahakanda Reservoir had released to other reservoirs and paddy fields and as a result 460 ,000 acre feets of water stored in the Reservoir now reduced to 171,582 Acre feets it has been reported.

Meanwhile large number of villagers who had shifted to other places and given new houses due to their submerged houses at naula area are being arriving in the area these days to view their old houses which are now visible.

Some of them had broken  down after seeing their old houses according to reports  .

A Person Has Died Due To An Electrocution In Mandaramnuwara

A 23 year old person has died due to
electrocution after colliding with a electricity line at Hapugahawatte in Mandaramnuwara ,Nuwara-Eliya yesterday (15).

The incident occurred after the deceased colliding with an extended unauthorized Electricity line it has been revealed .The deceased was a resident of Mandaramnuwara area .

Court Released Extremist National Thowheed Jamaath Colombo Leader As Attorney General Has No Objection Over It

Jayaratne has today (15) released the Colombo District leader of the Extremist group National Thowheed Jamaath Mohommad Pawas on bail .

The Chief Magistrate Jayaratne had released the remanded suspect pawas on two surety bails of Rs.500,000 each after Attorney General Dappula De Livera has  no objEcton on releasing him . However the Magistrate has imposed a foreign travel ban over the suspect.

The suspect who had been arrested by Keselwatte Police over attempting a criminal activity by using CD's and Video cassettes belonging to Thowheed Jamaath group had remanded by the Magistrate recently.

However the suspect was released on bail today  accordance to the Request made by Keselwatte Police.

The case against the suspect is due to be taken up for hearing on 24th of September .

The Increased Excise Tax imposed On Two Varieties Of Cigarettes Has Not Been Implemented Yet -ADIC

Although The Ministry Of Finance
had issued a Gazette Notification under the signature of Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera to increase the Excise tax imposed on 67 mili meters to 72 mili meter category 1000 sticks of  "Bristol " and Navicat  " cigarettes by Rs.37,000 ,The Gazette Notification has still not been  implemented according to Alcohol and Drug Information Center (ADIC) .

The Gazette Notification regarding the increasing of Excise duty imposed on Bristol and Navicat cigarettes has due to be implemented with effect from 11 th of July ,But it is delaying due to  some kind of influence the Executive Director Of ADIC Pubudu Sumanasekare ha stressed .

As the Finance Ministry has increased the Rs.20,500 worth current excise tax imposed on  above cigarette sticks under scientific basis the tax increase should be implemented as soon as possible ADIC Executive Director has stated .

Meanwhile addressing a press briefing held at Health Promotions Bureau in Colombo This evening (15) the Chairman of the National Alcohol and Tobacco Authority Dr.Palitha Abeykoon has said that an  island wide raids had been launched with effect from today to tackle those selling and using  Alcohol and Tobacco by illegal means .Public Health Inspectors are being conducted these raids and the persons tackle during raids will be punished according to the provisions of National Alcohol and Tobacco Act he has stressed .
