91 Sri Lankan Fishermen In Indian Custody Released With Their Fishing Crafts

The Indian Officials Released 91 Sri Lankan Fishermen who were taken in to custody along with 17 of their fishing crafts yesterday two days after following the Sri Lankan visit of Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao to discuss the issue on fisherman of two countries.

These fishermen were taken in to custody by Indian Coast Guard Authorities alleged on fishing in Indian shores during  last year and this year according to the Officials.Although these fishermen and their crafts were released 9 sri lankan fishermen and 4 vessels still in Indian Custody sources added.

Ten Injured Due To Accidental Explosion In Dock Yard

Due to an accidental explosion occurred in Colombo Dock Yard this evening Ten workers  were injured and admitted to the Colombo National Hospital .According to the Hospital Sources the injured received minor injuries and out of danger.

The explosion has occurred due to  a gas tank exploded while  workers were repairing a Ship in side the Dock Yard.

The National Building Research Organization has issued land slides warning to four districts in the hill country Kandy,Matale,Badulla and Nuwaraeliya.The Disaster situation is identified in these areas and public are advised to be cautious on the situation.

Hospital Staff Of Karapitiya Teaching Hospital To Launch A Strike Next Monday

The Hospital Staff of the Karapitiya teaching Hospital in Southern Province is decided to launch a one day strike in next Monday(07th) demanding the removal of Hospital Director due to her inefficiency in handling hospital work Health Trade Unions announced today.

According to the Government Medical Officers Association(GMOA) Doctors,Nurses,Minor Staff and whole staff of the Hospital numbering around 3000-4000 will participate this Strike Action..If the demand is not meet during the strike Health Staff is planning to expand their trade union action further according to the GMOA.

Main Opposition UNP To Boycott Independance Day Celebrations

nThe main opposition United National Party(UNP) has decided to boycott the 63rd National Independance Day Celebrations due to held in Kataragama in 04th February(Friday) opposing the imprisonment of former Army Commander Retired General Sarath Fonseka and the supression of the rights of people and the media according to the Secretary of UNP Tissa Attanayake.

Addressing a media briefing held today the UNP Secretary has said there will be no celebrations when the war hero who led the victory against terrorism is in Prison and the rights of people and media supressed.

Sharp Drop Of The Postal Voting Applications For Forthcoming Local Government Electtions

The deadline of the Postal Voting for  forthcoming local government elections ended today as the percentage of the Postal Vote Applications dropped sharply according to the sources.

Meanwhile the Elections Commissioners Office has announced today that the issuing of Preferential Numbers to the Candidates of the Local Government Elections will begin tomorrow.
