Obesity Amongst Females And Males In Sri Lanka Is On The Increase-Colombo Chief Medical Officer

The Obesity among st Sri Lankan Males and Females above 40 years old is on the increase according to the Chief Medical Officer In Colombo Dr.Ruwan Wijemuni.An island wide  survey carried out recently has shown that 60% of the females above 40 years old and 40% of the males belonging to the same age group in Sri Lanka are obsessed Dr.Wijemuni has stated.
The wrong food consuming pattern including consuming food with more Sugar,Starch and Oil Have caused this situation he has stressed.due to this non communicable diseases like High Blood Pressure,Heart Diseases,Cholesterol,Diabetes and Kidney Diseases are also on  increase in the country he has revealed.

To avoid future generations  getting  obesity The  Colombo Public Health Department is planning to conduct an awareness campaign on Preventing  Obesity  among st the School Children in  all government and private schools in Colombo City beginning this Wednesday Dr.Wijemuni has said.

The public health department is expecting to cover around 140 public and private  schools in the city through this programme.

EDITED- Three Killed Due To A Fire At A Bakery In Colombo -Another Three Critically Wounded

Three persons were killed due to a sudden fire broke out at the up stair of a bakery in Maradana (In Colombo City)this noon .The fire was broke out when a person tried to switched on the Gas Cooker to prepare Koththu Roti it has been reported.

Another three critically wounded persons were admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.All the victims are workers attached to the Bakery Police have said. 

It takes one and half hours for the fire brigade to doused the fire according to Police.The exploding of the gas tank was the reason for this sudden fire Police have further said.

Meanwhile due to the heavy traffic prevailed in the area at the time  the arrival of ambulances and the fire brigade to the scene  has been delayed sources said. 

Former Trade Minister Johnston Fernando Was Further Remanded Until 08th Of June

The imprisoned former Trade Minister Johnston Fernando and two of his associates were further remanded until 08th of June after they were   produced before the Kurunagala Magistrate Court this morning.The former minister  and his associates who were remanded over the allegation leveled against them on involved in Financial Fraud at  Sathosa Limited were arrested by the Police Finance Crimes Investigation Division and remanded afterwards.

Women And Child Abuse Has Escalated During Last Few Years- State Minister Of Child Affairs

The State  Minister Of Child Affairs Rosy Senanyake has said today(24) that during last few years the abuse of women and children in Sri Lanka has escalated by twenty folds.This has been revealed through an island wide survey she has stressed.

The State Minister has revealed this at a ceremony held in Awissawella today.

Police Have Used Water Cannons To Disperse A Group Of Protesters At Meethotamulle Protesting Against Garbage Dumping Site

The Police have used water canons to disperse a group of protesters who were protested in front of the Garbage Dumping Site in Meethotamulle area in Kolonnawa(Colombo District) by requesting an assurance from the authorities that disposal of garbage at Meethotamulle Garabage Dumping Site will be halted.

Around 700 metric tonnes of Garbage collected from the Colombo City is disposed daily at the 16 acre  Meethotamulle Garbage Dumping Site  and the bad o dour coming from  garbage mountain at the site  has caused severe health threats to the residents of the area especially the  children sources said.

The residents of the Meethotamulle Area have continuously protested in the past also calling for the removal of  garbage dumping site from the area but the authorities still failed to give a solution for the request.


An Indian National Who Tried To Smuggle Out Rs.9.7 Million Worth Stock Of Gems Detained At The Air Port

An Indian National was arrested by the Sri Lanka Customs this morning  at  Katunayake Bandaranaike International Air Port when he tried to smuggle out  Rs.9.7 million worth stock of gems from  Sri Lanka .

The suspect who was arrested at the departure lounge while awaiting to aboard  the flight to  Dubai had concealed a stock of Sri Lankan Gems weighing 200 Carrots concealed inside a Cigarette Pack .

According to the Customs Officers the detained stock of gems due to be forfeited and action will be taken against the suspect Indian National.

A Candlelight Vigil Ceremony To Be Held In Colombo Tomorrow(24) On Behalf Of The Gang Raped Girl

The Ministry Of Child Affairs and Child Protection Authority have organized a Candlelight Vigil Ceremony at the Independence Square in Colombo tomorrow(24) evening to express sympathy and solidarity towards the family members of  18 year old School Girl in Kayets who was gang raped   according to the State Minister of Child Affairs Mrs.Rosy Senanayake.

The ceremony is scheduled to be held at 5.30 p.m tomorrow.

Minister Rosy Senanayake has said that some people are attempting to take a political advantage from the incident.Such gang rapes should be stopped and those who are responsible for the act should be severely punished to prevent such incidents happens  in future she has further said.

The Minister has appealed the public to come to Independence Square tomorrow evening with a candle to express the sympathy and solidarity towards the family members of the said girl.

Jaffna Magistrate Court Has Issued A Stay Order Banning All Forms Of Protests In Jaffna Town

The Jaffna Magistrate Court has issued a stay order today(23) banning all forms of protests in Jaffna Town .The court has also instructed the Police to arrest any individual who violates this stay order.

According to the Police the Jaffna Magistrate Court has issued the stay order to Northern Provincial Councilor Ananthi Sasidaren,Chairman of the Janata balaya Organization T.Kumaravelu and another individual of an Organization prohibiting them form organizing  and hold any protest campaign in Jaffna Town and breaking the peace .

The Jaffna Magistrate Court has remanded around 130 protesters few days ago for unlawful protests conducted near the Jaffna Magistrate Court Complex ,Damaging Public Properties and assaulting  of Police Officers .

The remanded protesters were launched protests when the nine suspects of the gang raping incident of a 18 year old School Girl in Kayets Area have been brought to the court .

A Sudden Fire Had Destroyed Matara To Colombo Private Bus Completely-Passengers Were Exit Through The Rear Door

A Private Passenger Bus travelling from Matara to Colombo had suddenly  caught fire at Samudra Road in Galle this morning and the bus was completely destroyed due to this according to the Police.

Around 60 passengers who were aboard at the time when bus was caught on fire have managed to exit  through the rear door of the bus.No casualties have been  reported due to the incident and the fire has been reported as erupted  in  front side of the bus.

The Galle Municipal Council Fire Brigade and the Navy Fire Brigade have rushed
to the scene and managed to doused the fire.

The Galle Police have conducting an investigation on the incident.

Four Member Committee Appointed To Investigate In To The Bribery And Corruption In Ports Authority

A four member committee headed by President's Counsel Nalin Ladduwahetti has been appointed today(22) to investigate in to the allegations of  bribery and corruption occurred at Sri Lanka Ports Authority during the previous government the Government Information Department Has announced.

Five Higher Police Officials In Jaffna And Kayets Have Been Transferred With Immediate Effect

The Inspector General Of Police(IGP)had transferred Five  Higher officials attach to the Police Stations in Jaffna and Kytes with immediate effect according to the Police Department Sources.

Accordingly the ASP,OIC and SSP of Jaffna Police Division ,HQI Of Kayets Police Station  and HQI Of Jaffna Police Station have been transferred and they have replaced with new appointees the sources said.

These higher officers have been transferred on service requirements according to the Police Department.

Police Officers in Jaffna and Kayets have became under heavy criticism of the public due to their poor handling on the situation   following the gang rape of a 18 year old school girl in Kayets .

Around 903 Foreign Nationals Arrived Sri Lanka Were Arrested For Violating Visa Requirements

Around 903 Foreign Nationals who arrived Sri Lanka last year (2014) on tourist visa were arrested  for violating visa requirements the Minister of Public Order and Christian Religious Affairs John Amaratunge has informed the Parliament today(22).

The said tourists have been engaged in employment,religious propaganda activities etc.by arrived here on tourist visa the Minister has said.

These foreign nationals were arrived here from Countries belonging to South Asia,Europe and America according to the Minister Amaratunge.The minister has informed these details to the Parliament in response to a question raised by the UNP MP Buudhika Pathirane.

Pesticide Glyphosate To Be Banned In Sri Lanka -President Sirisena

The Government has decided to ban the importation  and distributing of  Pesticide Agro Chemical "Glyphosate" according to the President Maithripala Sirisena.The World Health Organization(WHO) as well as the consultants  have been recommended to stop importing this pesticide due to it's effect on kidney disease that spreading in north central province president has revealed.

While addressing the inauguration Ceremony of   10th Hotel Exhibition at BMICH this morning President has further stated that he will not personally influence any businessman in the country as done during the previous regime.

Speaker Has Given Permission For A Parliamentary Debate On Treasury Bond Issue

The Speaker Chamal Rajapakshe has today(21) given the permission for a Parliamentary Debate on  report submitted by the Committee appointed to investigate on Controversial Treasury Bond Issue of Central Bank.

Prime Minister Ranil Wikramasinahe has appointed the Committee.Speaker has given the Parliamentary Debate on  treasury bond issue as opposition has continuously requested a debate on the issue.

Around 130 Protesters Who Made Tense Situation Near Jaffna Court Complex Were Remanded

Around 130 persons that were arrested yesterday regarding  protesting unlawfully and damaged public properties near the Jaffna Court Complex have been remanded today(21)  until 04th of June by the Jaffna Magistrate.

The protesters were produced before the Jaffna Magistrate Court today in three batches and out of them 47 were remanded until 01st of June,43 were until 03rd of June and 40 were until 04th of June respectively.

These protesters were damaged public property near Jaffna Court Complex and assaulted the Police Officers who were there at the court complex to provide security by demanding death sentence for the nine suspects arrested in connection with kidnapping,rape and murder of a 18 year old school girl in Kayts .The tense situation has occurred when the suspects involved in gang rape were produced before  Jaffna Magistrate Court yesterday.

Four Opposition MP'S Holding Ministerial Posts In Government Have Resigned From Their Posts

Four MP' s of the  main opposition Sri Lanka Freedom Party(SLFP) who are holding Ministerial Posts of the present government have been resigned from their posts short while ago.The main reason behind their decision to resigned from their posts was dissolving the local government institutions and not holding fresh elections for those institutions.

The four ministers who have resigned from their ministerial posts Pavithra Wanniarachchi,Dilan Perera,C.B Rathnayake and Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene have criticized Prime Minister Ranil Wikramasinha's decisions heavily during a press briefing held at Opposition Leader's Office this noon.

Former Defense Secretary Was Questioned By The Financial Crimes Investigations Division

The former Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapakshe was questioned by the Police Financial Crimes Investigations Division this morning regarding the alleged MIG Deal and the share issuance of  Lanka Hospitals.

The former defense secretary had filed a fundamental rights petition at Supreme Court on 11th of May by challenging the legality of forming  financial crimes division and seeking an interim order to prevent the crimes division from arresting him over the charges.

After considering the petition a  two member Judge Panel of the Supreme Court  has controversially  issued an interim order last week  by  avoiding  financial crimes division from arresting the former defense secretary until this October.

Former Housing Minister MP Wimal Weerawanshe Was Questioned By CID Over His Wife's Passport And Identity Card

The former minister of Housing MP Wimal Weerawanshe has given a statement to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) this morning regarding how his wife Shashi Weerawanshe has obtained the Diplomatic Passport and National Identity Card.

The CID has informed the court on  last Friday that the Diplomatic Passport and National Identity Card of Minister weerawanshe's wife have been forged and they were obtained by her  producing false details.
