Board Of Inquiry Has Revealed Corrupt Deals Running In To Billions Of Dollars Occurred In Sri Lankan Air Lines

The Board Of Inquiry that appointed to probe on the corruption occurred in Sri Lankan Air Lines during the previous government had today (04)revealed that the corrupt deals running into billions of dollars including recruiting of  unqualified staff to the air lines and manipulations of service contracting occurred during 2006-2014 and named former Sri Lankan Air Lines Chairman Nishantha Wikramasinha who is also the brother in  law of former President Mahinda Rajapakshe and the former Chief Executive Officer of the Air Lines Kapila Chandrasena as the persons responsible for these  corrupt activities.

The Board of Inquiry headed by the Anti Corruption Advocate C.J Weliamuna has mentioned in the inquiry report which was released that in one occasion despite the availability of more cost effective measures the previous management had purchased a brand new air craft worth 2.3 billion US Dollars. .
Also the previous chairman had released a cabin crew member of the air lines for the work at the presidential secretariat per the request of former secretary to the president Lalith Weerathunge but she was involved in political work of MP Namal Rajapakshe the son of the former president,However she had been over paid more than Rs.4.2 million but there's no explanation what kind of work she has provided to receive such an amount the report has mentioned.

The Former chairman and CEO have clearly engaged in abuse of power including falsifying documents to lease Super Luxary Vehicles for the use of former Chairman Wikramasinha which resulted the heavy losses experienced by the Sri Lankan National Carrier Sri Lankan Air Lines the Board Of Inquiry has stated.

The Board Of Inquiry appointed by the Minister of Ports ,Shipping and Aviation Arjuna Ranatunge has recommended criminal prosecutions against the former Chairman ,CEO and few other management staff of the  Sri Lankan Air Lines for involving these corrupt activities. .

Sri Lanka Becomes The Number One Country In South Asia Which Having Lowest Pregnancy Related Maternal Death Rate

Sri Lanka has become the Number One Country in the  South Asian Region  that having the lowest maternal death rate among pregnant mothers with pregnancy related maternal death rate has been reduced by 15% during last few years alone according to the Consultant Community Physician attach to the Family Health Bureau Dr.Kapila Jayaratne.

According to the latest survey carried out by the Family Health Bureau ,in the year 2012 around 134 pregnancy related maternal deaths have been reported from the country and that number has been  significantly reduced in 2013 with 119 maternal deaths.

The major causes of the pregnancy related maternal deaths in Sri Lanka are  Heart Diseases,Pneumonia and other physical illnesses according to Dr.Jayaratne who is also the national programme manager of the maternal and child morbidity and mortality surveillance of the family  health  bureau.The maternal deaths during pregnancy occur due to the bleeding,high blood pressure and abortions  have been significantly reduced due to the good quality  maternal services provided by local hospitals and maternal units he has stressed.

The high quality maternal services provided through the government hospitals and maternal units in Sri Lanka are equal to those in developed countries he has further said.

Ministry Of Justice To Offer Justice Of Peace Titles To 460 Veteran Personal Who Brought Glory At International Level

The Ministry Of Justice has decided to offer Titles of  Justice Of Peace to Veteran Sports Personal,Cinema Artists and Journalists who have brought glory to Sri Lanka at  International Level according to the Minister Of Justice Wijedasa Rajapakshe.

Ministry Of Justice had planned to implement this special programme  of offering Justice Of Peace Titles  to around 460 personal during  next two weeks.Under this programme around 260 Sports Personal nominated by National Sports Bodies,100 Cinema Artists nominated by National Film Corporation and 100 Journalists nominated by Major Media Associations will receive the Justice Of Peace Titles the minister has said.

The Justice Of Peace known as JP is a Title given by the Justice Ministry to personal in almost every field and those who are receiving the title are eligible to certify an impotent documents at national level.

National Cricket Selectors Headed By Chief Selector Sanath Jaysuriya Have Decided To Resign From Their Posts

The all six members of the National Cricket Selection  Committee of Sri Lanka  including the President of the Committee the Former Sri Lankan Star Cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya have  today (03) announced that they will be resigned for their posts pave the way to the new administrators of the Sri Lanka Cricket Interim Committee to appoint a new panel of cricket selectors.

Chief Selector Sanath Jayasuriya has already tendered his resignation to the Sports And Tourism Minister Naveen Dissanayake it has been reported.

The rest of the selection committee including the former cricketers Hashan Thilakeratne,Pramodaya Wikramasinha,Hematha Wikramaratne,Eric Upashantha and Chaminda Mendis are due to be tendered their resignations reports said.

During the recently concluded ICC World Cup Cricket Tournament held  in Austarlia and New Zealand ,the controversial selections made by the national cricket selectors for the national cricket team especially for the crucial matches have been heavily criticized by the local media.

The Cricket Selectors due to be resigned were appointed by the Sports Minister of the Former Government Mahindananda Aluthgamage .

A Partial Lunar Eclipse To Be Visible To Sri Lanka Tomorrow(04)

A Partial Lunar Eclipse is due to be visible to Sri Lanka tomorrow(04) with the moon rising from the Eastern Horizon around 6.18 p.m and will be there till 7.15 p.m.The Eclipse will begin at 2.31 P.M in Sri Lankan Standard Time and due to be ended at 8.29 P.M.

As this Lunar Eclipse occurs during the day time only the later part  of the eclipse is visible to Sri Lanka Local Scientists have said.After 7.15 p.m tomorrow as the Moon is entering to Penumbra
no eclipse will be visible except the little dimming of moon light they have stated.

According to the Professor Chandana Jayaratne of the Department Of  Physics  In University Of Colombo the lunar eclipse will be ended at 8.29 p.m local time with the moon leaving the penumbral part of the eclipse.As the total time of the eclipse is 5 minutes it will be the shortest lunar eclipse in the 21st Century Professor Jayaratne has stressed.

The entire lunar eclipse will be visible to the people in North America,New Zealand,Australia and Eastern Asia he has said.

Previous Government Has Spent Millions Of Rupees Unnecessarily For Consultancy Work of Roads -Minister Kabir Hashim


During the making of  extension to the Southern Express Highway from Hambanthota to Matara Previous government had spent Rs.124 million per one kilo meter  for consultancy service alone alleged by the Minister Of Roads And Investment Promotions Kabir Hashim.


Also for Consultancy Work of Lunugamwehera-Kataragama Road Rs.255 million per Kilo Meter has been spent and another Rs.722 million per kilometer has been spent for the consultancy work  of alternative road made in Kegalle District in the view of reducing the motor traffic there Minister has stressed.

While addressing the media Minister Hashim has said that all these unnecessary spending of the Previous regime has to be considered as  an act of sin.

As the present government is handling the tender procedures properly when awarding tenders to build roads ,henchmen of the previous Rajapaksha regime are trying to criticize the development work currently underway Minister has further said.

Court Of Appeal Has Issued An Interim Order To Suspend Full Face Helmet Ban

The Court Of Appeal has today(02) issued an interim order by suspending the gazette notification on banning the using of full face helmets by  motorcycles until 27th of April.The Police Department had earlier  decided to implement the ban with effect from today.

However after considering a petition filed by  two motorcyclists  who are challenging the ban   the bench of Judges in Court Of Appeal has issued an interim order to suspend the gazette notification.

The Petitioners have stated in their petition that if the ban of using full face helmets imposed it will cause motorcyclists a great inconvenience.

President Has Pardoned The Female Who Damaged The Mirror Wall Of Sigirya Frescoes

President Maithripala Sirisena has today (02) pardoned the 23 year old Batticloe female garment worker who was sentenced to two years imprisonment for damaging the mirror wall of Sigiriya Frescoes by using sharp object .The female Sinnathambi Udeni was arrested by the archeology officers in Sigiriya on 15th of February and handed over to the Sigiriya Police.

After produced before the court she has been sentenced to two years imprisonment as the investigations report has been revealed that the  damage she has done to the historical mirror wall of the sigiriya frescoes cannot be corrected.

The accused had also accepted her wrong doing but stated at the court
that she was not aware on the historical value of the mirror wall as that was the first time she has been visited Sigiriya.

Full Face Helmet Ban To Be Implemented From Today(02)

The Banning of wearing Full Face Helmets by the motorcyclists will be implemented with effect from today (02) according to the Police Department.As a first step the ban will be implemented as a warning opportunity  the department has said.

The aim of the banning of wearing full face helmets is to reduce the robberies and crimes occur by using these helmets.Over the past few months robberies and crimes done by people wearing full face helmets have been increased Police have said.

However the government has yesterday said that the banning  of wearing full face helmets will be implemented from next May not from today as planned.Few days a go a section of motorcyclists have protested in Colombo against the full face helmet ban.

Main Opposition Sri Lanka Freedom Party To Propose New Reforms To The 19th Amendment

Sri Lanka Freedom Party(SLFP) which belongs to the main opposition  has decided to propose new reforms to the draft bill on 19th Amendment which proposed to reduce several executive powers of the Executive Presidency.

SLFP  is with the view that reducing several executive powers of the Presidency including the chief of the government status should discuss further as it attempts to make Prime Minister's Post more powerful with several executive powers the secretary to the SLFP Anura Priyadarshana Yapa has said.

As SLFP is still strong in the opposition, without their backing the new government will not be able to pass the bill with two thirds majority he has further stated.

The Draft Bill On 19th Amendment has been tabled in Parliament last week.

Two Were Killed And Twenty Eight Got Injured Due To A Army Truck-Bus Collision

Two persons including an Army Personal  were killed and another 28 Passengers got  injured and hospitalized after a Army Truck and a Passenger Bus collided head to head at Ratnapura New Town this evening.Army Truck was travelling Diaytahalawa to Kuruwita in Ratanapura District when it collided with the bus which was  travelling in the opposition direction.

Injured were admitted to the Ratnapura Hospital.

Special Gazette Has Been Issued To Reduce Cement Prices

A special gazette notification has been issued on reducing the price of 50 Kilo Gramme Cement Bags per the proposal made through the Interim Budget  recently.According to the Gazette Notification  a 50 Kilo Gramme Cement Bag issuing to the market from any trade name should be sold for Rs.870 from now onwards and distributing ,selling and displaying of Cement Bags above the given price should be a punishable offense.

The Police Financial Crime Investigation Division had today (31) recorded a statement from the former Treasury Secretary and Secretary To The Economic Development Ministry Dr.P.B Jayasundara on the controversial Hedging Deal.The government had lost over US Dollars 200 million due to this deal it has been reported.

Yesterday (30) Police Financial Crime Investigation Division had recorded a statement from the former Central Bank Governor and the director of the Divi Naguma Project Ajith Nivaad Cabraal over the Hedging Deal.

Supreme Court Has Rejected A Petition Filed Against The Former President Rajapakshe

The Supreme Court had today (31) Rejected the Petition filed by the Duminda Nagamuwa of Front line Socialist Party against former President Mahinda Rajapakshe over alleged deployment of the Army Personal during the recently concluded Presidential Elections on 08th of January.

In that petition the former President was charged that he has allegedly violated provisions of the Civil Security Act by deploying Army Personal during the election.

Seven Police Officers Got Injured And Hospitalized Due To The Police -Uni Student Clashes

Seven Police Officers including an Inspector got injured during the clash between the Protesting University Students and Police at Colpetty Junction occurred this evening and admitted to the National Hospital,Colombo.

The Riot Squad of the Police have used Tear Gas and Water Cannon to disperse a group of University Students who were obstructed at traffic in Colpetty Junction .The Group was on the way Colombo for a Protest Campaign when this incident occurred.

Police have used tear gas and Water short while ago to disperse a group of University Students at Colpetty Junction who were marched towards Colombo to protest against several demands including the Malabe  Private Medical College Issue .Police have used the tear gas and water  against the Students as they have obstructed the traffic at Col petty Junction.

The University Students too attacked Policemen with stones it has been reported.Police have arrested three Students who behaved violently during the march.The Inter University Students Federation has organized this protest march.

Due to this protest march heavy  traffic has been reported in many routes to Colombo and motorists have advised by the police to use alternative routes

Government To Recommence All The Suspended Road Development Projects With Chinese Asssistance

Sri Lankan Government has decided to recommence all the suspended main and provincial road development projects with the assistance of China.The Ministry Of Highways,Higher Education And Investment Promotions has said to be already paid around One Billion Rupees for  relevant Chinese Contractors for the projects.

Some Chinese Companies had earlier decided to suspend some of the projects due to non payment of money .The extension of Southern Express Highway is one of the suspended projects due to be recommenced it's work soon.
