Veteran Athlete Sugath Thilakaratne Has Been Elected As The New President Of Sri Lanka Athletic Association

Veteran Athlete Sugath Thilakaratne has been elected as the new President of  Sri Lanka Athletic Association today(14).At the Election of Sri Lanka Athletic Association which was held today at the Auditorium of National  Institute Of Sports Science At the election Sugath Thilakeratne has defeated his main contender to the Post Of President Upali Kumarasiri by majority of 59 votes .

The former 400 meters runner Thilakaratne has been received 83 votes at  the election and  retired DIG Kumarasiri has received 24 votes.

Pivithuru Hela Urumaya Leader Udaya Gammanpila Has Lodged A Complaint Against President And Prime Minister At Bribery Commission

The leader of the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya  ,Western Provincial Councilor Udaya Gammanpila has today(13) lodged a complaint at Bribery Commission against President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wikramasinha regarding promising to offer positions during the Presidential Election Campaign .

According to the Western Provincial Councilor Gammanpila who is known as a key supporter of Former President Mahinda Rajapakshe ,During the Presidential Election Campaign President Sirisena has announced that he would appoint Ranil Wikramasinha as the Prime Minister  once he elected  as President and Under the Presidential Elections Act promising ,issuance and acceptance of positions to ensure victory at the  Presidential Election are an acts of bribe.

Supreme Court Had Issued An Interim Order Preventing The Arrest Of Former Defense Secreatry

The Supreme Court has issued an interim order today(13) preventing the arrest of former defense secretary Gotabaya Rajapakshe until the final determination of the fundamental rights application  filed at the Supreme Court by him.The next hearing of his petition is scheduled on 06th of October.

The former defense secretary who is also the brother of former president Mahinda Rajapakshe had filed a fundamental rights application seeking an interim order to prevent his arrest and challenging the legality of  Police Financial Crimes Investigations Division which investigating the large scale financial frauds of previous government.

Meanwhile before considering the fundamental rights application filed by former defense secretary today Judge one of the judges belonging to the three judge panel Justice Buwaneka Aluwihare had announced that he will step down from the case due to personal reasons.The remaining two judges Justices Eva Vanasundare and Sisisra De Abrew have gave the decision.

The Former defense secretary has appeared before the bribery commission yesterday to record a statement regarding the allegations leveled against him.

Misusing The Money Belonging To Tsunami Housing Project- Chief Operating Officer Of RADA Further Remanded

The Chief Operating Officer of the Reconstruction and Development Agency(RADA) Saliya Wikramasuriya who was remanded few days ago for allegedly misusing of millions of rupees allocated in the Tsunami Housing Project at Kilinochchi was  further remanded until 19th of May by the Colombo Chief Magistrate.

Colombo Chief Magistrate had issued the order of remanding Saliya Wikramasuriya after he was produced before the Colombo Magistrate Court today(12).

Meanwhile Police is due to be arrested the key suspect of  case on misusing   Tsunami Housing Project Money soon according to Police Sources.

General Election To Be Held Prior To Local Government Poll- President Sisisena

President Maithripala Sirisena has said today(12) that the local government bodies will become under the supervision of a special commissioner after they will  automatically dissolve on 15th of May.According to the  President he prefers to conduct the General Election prior to the local government poll.

The official term of the local government bodies ended on 31st of March this year but the government had extended the term until 15th of May due to the political situation prevailing in the country at that time following the Presidential Election held on 08th of January.

However earlier the Political Analysts have predicted that the local government poll will be held prior to the general election as the extended term of the local government bodies due to end on 15th of May.

Meanwhile the proposed 20th Amendment regarding the electoral reforms was presented to  all political parties by the President Yesterday(11).The Parliament is scheduled to be dissolved soon after the passing of 20th Amendment the government sources have said.

Sri Lankan Embassy Building Has Damaged Due To The Nepali Earthquake

The Sri Lankan Embassy in Nepali Capitol Kathmandu has been damaged due to the 7.4 magnitude earthquake which struck ed Nepal few hours ago sources said.According to the Sri Lankan Embassy Officials in Kathmandu the Embassy Building has suffered minor damage due to the quake.

The Embassy Staff is not affected due to the earthquake they have said.

The Colombo Crimes Division has arrested the Former Minister A.H.M Fowzie's son Western Provincial Councilor Nauzar Fowzie this morning over an alleged death threat he made against a Businessman in 2012.

The Colombo Chief Magistrate gihan pilapitiya has ordered the police yesterday(11) to arrest the Western Provincial Councilor Fowzie over the allegation against him.The chief magistrate's order was issued following the B File filed by the Colombo Crimes Division.

Former Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapakshe Has Filed A Fundamental Rights Application At The Supreme Court

The former Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapakshe has today(11) filed a fundamental rights application at the Supreme Court by challenging the  legality  of forming   Police Financial Crimes Investigations Division .
Through his application the former Defense Secretary who is also the brother of Former President Mahinda Rajapakshe has sought Supreme Court's intervention to prevent arresting him after the conclusion of several investigations carrying out by the Criminals Investigations Division (CID),Bribery Commission and the Police Financial Crimes Investigations Division over the allegations leveled against him.

Former Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapakshe has named the Inspector General Of Police,Cabinet Ministers,Secretary To The President,Director Of CID ,Deputy Inspector General Of Police(Frauds and Corruption Investigations Division) and Attorney General as respondents of his  Application.

Meanwhile He has appeared before the bribery commission today to provide a statement regarding an allegation leveled against him.

Government Hospital Radiographers To Launch An Island Wide Token Strike On Wednesday

All Government Hospital Radiographers except in Four Hospitals have decided to launch an Island Wide one day token strike on this Wednesday(13) by demanding  to cancel the charge sheets issued for the 14 Radiographers regarding their involvement  in a strike launched last year(2014) .

According to the Government Radiographers Union 500 Radiographers attach to around 110 hospitals island wide will be participated this token strike scheduled to be held from 8 a.m on Wednesday to 8 a.m on This Thursday .However the Radiographers attach to Maharagama Cancer,Castle Street Maternity ,De Soyza Maternity and Peradeniya Children s Teaching Hospitals will not participate the strike due to humanitarian reasons the president of the Radiographers Union Darmakeerthi Apa has said.

During the strike period the life saving tests will be performed at all government hospitals he has said.

The Health Ministry Officials have  issued charge sheets to 14 Radiographers attach to government hospitals for involved in a strike launched  last year Darmakeerthi Apa  has stressed."This is a clear violation of a Trade Union Rights "President Of The Government Radiographers Union has further said.

Former Minister MP Johnston Fernando Was Further Remanded Until 25th of May

The former Minister Of Trade And Cooperatives MP Johnston Fernando who was arrested and remanded for Financial Fraud occurred in Lanka Sathosa Limited has been further remanded until 25th of May by the Kurunagala (North Western Province)Magistrate today(11).MP Fernando who was arrested by the Police Financial Crimes Investigations Division last week was brought to the Kurunagala Magistrate Court this morning from Welikada Prison in Colombo.

He is due to be transferred to the Welikada Prision again shortly.

MP Sajin Vaas Gunawardene who was arrested this noon for misusing the vehicles owned  by Presidential Secretariat has been  remanded until 20th of May by the Colombo Fort Chief Magistrate.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has summoned MP Gunawardene this morning to record a statement regarding the allegation leveled against him,

MP Sajin Vaas Gunawardene of main opposition United Peoples Freedom Alliance(UPFA) had arrested this noon by the Criminal Investigations Department(CID) over an allegation leveled against him on misusing of vehicles belonging to the Presidential Secretariat during  previous government.

CID summoned MP Gunawardene this morning to record a statement regarding the allegation.

Recently the Police have announced that they do not know the whereabouts of around 120 vehicles belonging to the Presidential Secretariat.

President Agreed To Dissolve The Parliament If Party Leaders Not Accept The 20th Amendment-JVP Leader

The leader of the leftist Janatha Wimukthi Peramuna(JVP) MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake has said today(10) that President Maithripala Sirisena has agreed to dissolve the Parliament with immediate effect if he fails to reach an agreement among st the political parties on  20th Amendment,The Amendment is due to be presented to the representatives of All Political Parties tomorrow(11) .

President Has made these remarks during the meeting held with JVP Representatives yesterday(09) JVP Leader has said. 

Government Has Removed Special Tariff On Imported Rice And Introduced A New Tariff

The Government has decided to remove the Special Trade Tariff imposed on imported rice and  introduced a new tariff with effect from 06th of March.According to the Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake Government has removed the Rs.40 Special Trade Tariff imposed on imported rice and  introduced a Rs.35 Tariff .

The new tariff on imported rice will include other tariffs as well Finance Minister has said.However due to this new tariff there will be no change of other imported tariffs he has stressed.

A Fallen Tree Killed One Person At Pitugala Junction In New Kandy Road

One person died due to a fallen tree at Pitugala Junction in Malabe-Kaduwela New Kandy Road according to the Police.The road was blocked this morning as a result of the fallen tree and heavy traffic was reported at the road for hours.

Afterwards Police have taken steps to clear the road and pave the way to  motorists to move on the road.

President Siirsena To Present The 20th Amendment On Electoral Reforms To All Political Parties Tomorrow(11)

President Maithripala Sirisena is due to be presented the proposed 20th Amendment on Electoral Reforms at the All Political Party Representative's meeting scheduled to be held tomorrow(11) according to the government sources.

The Amendment is due to be presented to the Cabinet on 13th of May and to the Parliament on 19th of May.

According to the government's 100 day programme Parliament will be dissolved after passing of  19th and 20th Amendments at the Parliament.The main opposition Sri Lanka Freedom Party  also prepared it's proposals on the electoral reforms as the 20th Amendment and circulated among  party leaders and media last month.

Government To Dissolve All Local Government Bodies On 15th Of May-Minister Amaratunge

The Government has decided to dissolve the local government bodies on 15th of May according to the Minister John Amaratunge.The term of local government bodies which is scheduled to be completed by the end of March was extended until 15th of May due to the political situation in the country at that time Minister has stressed.

The Cabinet has today decided not to extend the terms
of local government bodies after 15th of May.

Government will appoint a special committee to inquire on the fraudulent activities that  occurred in some local bodies after they are dissolved Minsiter Amaratunge has said.

President Had Ordered To Stop Deforestation And Clearing The Lands Surrounding Wilpattu National Park

President Maithripala Sirisena has today(09) ordered to halt the deforestation and clearing the lands that surrounding the Famous Wilpattu National Park.President has also instructed the authorities to take legal action against those who are involved in deforestation and clearing land surrounding the national park.

During last few days The  Bodu Bala Sena Organization has continuously accused that the Minister Rishard Badurdeen is engaged in clearing the forest in Wipattu to settle Muslim People there.However the Minister has denied of any involvement on the issue and challenged that  if someone proves he has been involved on this he will be resigned from his ministerial post.

Meanwhile President Sirisena has also instructed the secretary of the Environment Ministry to probe on the complaint.Per the instructions of the president sirisena the  Ministry Of Environment has decided to investigate on the deforestation and clearing the lands near Wilpattu Parthe ministry sources have said.

Corruption- MP Sajin Vaas Has Been Informed To Be Appeared Before CID On Monday

The MP of the opposition United Peoples Freedom Alliance(UPFA) Sajin Vaas Gunawardene has been informed to appear before the Criminal Investigations Department(CID) on Monday(11)  to provide a statement regarding certain missing  vehicles belonging to the Presidential Secretariat.

The CID has questioned the MP Gunawardene on last February over corruption charges leveled against him including earning luxurious assets and properties during the previous government.He was also charged of purchasing luxurious vehicles including helicopters.

Former Chief Operating Officer Of RADA Was Remanded Regarding Cheating Money From Tsunami Housing Funds

The Police Special Investigations Unit has today(09) arrested and remanded the former Chief Operating Officer of  Sri Lanka Reconstruction and Development Agency (RADA) Saliya Wikramasuriya over an allegation leveled against him on cheating Rs.169 million from Tsunami Housing Funds.He was remanded until 12th of May by the Colombo Fort Magistrate after produced him before the Magistrate Court.

The money that the former Chief Operating Officer of  RADA has cheated have been received to build houses for the people in North and East who lost their homes due to the Tsunami that struck ed Sri Lanka on 2004.

Consumer Affairs Authority Has Launched An Island wide Inspection On Alcohol Levels Included In Liquor

The Consumer Affairs Authority has launched an island wide inspection on checking the percentage of Alcohol included in all the Liquor Varieties  according to the Chairman of the Authority Rumi Marshook.This inspection was launched due to the large number of complaints received by the Consumer Affairs Authority that in some liquor varieties the Alcohol Percentage included are above or below  the percentage mentioned on the label he has said.

Usually the percentage of Alcohol included in liquor is between 22.8% to 48.5% .

Presidential Guard Headed By Sri Lankan Army Was Dissolved

The Presidential Guard Established under the Sri Lankan Army by the former President Mahinda Rajapakshe has been dissolved with the effect from 30th Of April according to the Army.All the Army Personal attached to the Guard reassigned to their previous military units Army sources said.

The dissolving  of Presidential Guard headed by Army will not affect the President Maithripala Sirisena's security the sources further said.

The Police Financial Crimes Investigations Division has today (08) summoned the former Secretary Of The Ministry Of Sports Major General Nanda Mallawaarachchi regarding the allegation leveled against him over the financial irregularities occurred in the Sports Ministry.

Around 200 Sri Lankans Living Abroad Were Granted Dual Citizenship Within Last Week-Immigration Emigration Controller

Sri Lanka Immigartion and Emigration Department has granted dual citizenship for  200 Sri Lankans who are  reside in  nine countries including in Europe and America within last week according to the Department Sources.Those who have fulfilled required qualifications were granted the Dual Citizenship the sources have added.

Granting Dual Citizenship's for Sri Lankans living  abroad was suspended by the previous government four years ago.However the present government has began granting dual citizenship for Sri Lankans since 30th of April.

The Immigartion And Emigration Controller M.N  Ranasinha has said that there are a large number of Sri Lankans living  abroad that applied for Dual Citizenship and they too will be
 given a chance to get the dual citizenship in near future.
