President To Inaugurate The Moragahakande Dam Project Today (08)

Moragahakande Dam Project which is the largest project constructed by the Mahaweli authority after four decades  and providing water to 300,000 acres of land for cultivation   and pure drinking water to around 300,000 persons, today (08).

The construction of the project was started on 25th of January 2007 and it due to complete on 25th of July 2016.Moragakanda project is  located in Elahara area.

The Moragakanda river is the  last river constructed under  the five Mahaweli rivers and it was built by blocking the water coming from Nuckles mountains which flowing through the Amban River and by blocking the Kalu River.Through the Moragakande Project around 2000 reservoirs in Eastern,North Central and North Western provinces will receive water.

The full water capacity of the Moragakande River is 660,000 acres and it will add 25 mega watt power to the national power grid.

In whole around 1.5 million people  will be bdnefited through the project it has been revealed.

Moragahakande River is the only river consisting of three dams built with sand ,concrete and rocks.ha

Due to the project around 3500 families in laggala and naula areas have been displaced and they are currently re settling in other areas it has been announced.

betel leaves contain "Mawa"narcotic and Illegal Cigarettes targetting  school children at a trade stall  in nallur,Jaffna.

Police have also taken in to custody a stock of Betel Leaves contain "Mawa"narcotic and Illegal Cigarettes in possession of the suspect who had arrived in Jaffna from Puttalam area.

The suspect due to produce before the court.

A Young Couple Was Killed Due To A Three Wheeler-Car Collision

A young couple was killed and their infant had
critically injured and hospitalized after the Three Wheeler they were travelling in colliding with a Car arrived in opposite direction at Thambuttegama area last evening (06).

The critically injured couple and their infant were admitted to the Anuradhapura General Hospital for treatment where the couple had succumbed to their injuries on admission.

The driver of the Car was arrested by the Police over the accident and he is due to produce before the court.




Prime Minister Wikramasinghe Had Requested The Speaker To Convene The Parliament To Debate On Bond Scam Report

Prime Minister Ranil Wikramasinghe had today
(07)requested the Speaker Karu Jayasuriya to convene the Parliament as soon as possible to begin a debate on the report of Central Bank Bond scam issue while addressing the special convention of ruling United National Party (UNP)held today (07)at Campball Park in Borella (Colombo).

Opposition Parties have earlier stated that the Speaker should convene a special parliamentary session over the Bond scam report which was handed over to the President Maithripala Sirisena recently.

The special convention of UNP was held to mark the 70th Anniversary of the Party.

A Person Was Arrested While Transporting Heroin

Matale Police have arrested a person while
transporting 3.5 grammes of Heroin from Kandy to Matale by hidden in his underwear at Thanna,Matale.

The suspect who is a resident of Kirimatiyawa in Matale had several court cases filed against him previously over smuggling narcotics it has been revealed.

He is due to be produced before the Matale Magistrate Court along with the haul of Heroin taken in to custody in possession of the suspect.

A Motorcyclist Was Killed After Colliding With An Animal

A 37 year old Motorcyclist was killed after colliding
with an unirentified Animal at Dimuthugama area on Hambanthota-Meegahapandura road last night (06)it has been revealed.

The critically injured Motorcyclist had succumbed to his injuries after admission to Hambanthota Hospital for treatment.

The Motorcycle ridden by the deceased who was a resident of Dimuthugama area was toppled over the road after colliding with the animal it has been revealed.

A Youth Was Killed After Colliding With A Train

A Youth was killed after colliding with a train
travelling from Aluthgama to Maradana at Bambalapitiya area it has been reported.

The identity of the deceased youth not yet been revealed and Bambalapitiya Police have sent his body to Colombo National Hospital.

A Motorcyclist Was Killed Due To A Road Accident

A 26 year old Motorcyclist was killed after the
Motorcycle he was riding colliding with a Lorry parked in a roadside at Senarathgama area on Padeniya-Anuradhapura road.

The critically injured youth Motorcyclist was admitted to Thambuttegama Hospital and later transfered to Anuradhapura General Hospital where he had succumbed to his injuries.

The deceased was identified as a resident of Ibbalamuwa area.

Galgamuwa Police have arrested the Lorry driver regarding the accident.

Twenty Seven Indian Nationals Arrested While Staying In Sri Lanka Illegally

officials have today (06)arrested 27 Indian Nationals who are staying in Sri Lanka illegally with expired visas in Vavuniya District.

A Sri Lankan Arrested With US Currency Notes And Cigarette Packs Illegally Brought To Sri Lanka

Airport customs officers had yesterday (05)arrested a
41 year old Sri Lankan who had attempted to smuggle US Dollers 25,000 and 120 Cigarette Packs illegally to Sri Lanka at Katunayake,Bandaranaike International Airport .

The US Doller currency notes were hidden in a small belt belonging to suspect  and the Cigarette packs were hidden in his luggage according to Customs Officers.

The estimated value of the US Dollers currency notes and Cigarette packs taken in to custody in possession of the suspect is around Rs.4 million it has been revealed.

The suspect who is a resident of Chavakachcheriya area was arrested after he was arriving from Chennai,India by a Sri Lankan Airlines flight.



Special Police Task Force Personal And Navy Recovered Two Hidden Stocks Of Kerala Cannabis

The Special Police Task Force Personal in Jaffna had
this aftern8on (06) recovered 17.760 Kilo Grammes of Kerala Cannabis hidden near the Thondamanaru Bridge in Velvatithurai area (Northern Province) as per an information received by them.

The stock of Kerala Cannabis recovered is due to be handed over to the Velvitithurai Police for a legal action.

Sri Lanka Navy too had today (06)recovered a large stock of narcotics including 90 Kilo Grammes of Kerala Cannabis hidden in the sea coast of Velvatithurai.


A Czech National Was Injured And Hospitalized Due To A Knife Attack In Ella

A Czech national has been injured and hospitalized
due to a knife attack received from his fellow countryman during a brawl occurred among them at a tourist hotel at  Halpe area in Ella today (06).

The injured was admitted to the Badulla Hospital for treatment.

Police have arrested the Czech National who had attacked the injured over the incident and he is due to produce before Bandarawela Magistrate Court

Eleven Persons Were Injured Due To A Road Accident In Southern Expressway

Eleven persons have been injured and hospitalized
after the Van they were travelling in veering off the road and colliding with a security fence of the Southern Expressway near the 95.5 Kilo Meter post at Imaduwa this noon (06).

The injured were admitted to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital for treatment and the condition of two of them is critical it has been revealed.

The Van travelling from Galle to Matara veering off the road as a result of the driver's inability to control the speed of the vehicle according to reports.

Akmeemana Police along with the Southern Expressway Police are jointly conducting an investigation on the incident.

Two Persons Were Arrested With A Haul Of Heroin

The Police narcotic bureau officers have arrested two
persons while transporting 1.530 Kilo grammes of Heroin by a Motorcycle at wassawulla in Kuliyapitiya area.

The haul of Heroin was stored in a travelling bag according to the Police

The two suspects who are residents of Wassawulla area have been remanded until 11th of January after being produced them before the Kuliyapitiya Magistrate Court.

extend the ban imposed on Perpetual Treasuries Limited by preventing functioning  as a primary dealer  of the Bank for further six months with effect from today (05).

A Person Was Arrested With A Stock Of Mawa Narcotic

A federal Criminal  Court in Switzerland had collected evidences yesterday (04)from 13 Sri Lankan Tamil; Youth belonging to the Tamil Diasphora over cheering the money  collected from Sri Lankan Tamils in Switzerland  for LTTE Terrorist Organization it has been revealed.

The Federal Court has given the group of suspected Sri Lankan Tamil youth a 20 day period to provide details on the money they have collected from Tamil Nationals in Switzerland during a ten year period from 1999 to 2009 after they had requested more time for it according to reports.

The suspects had sent the collected money to Sri Lanka via Dubai and Singapore .

Related imageColombo Fort Magistrate has today(05) issued an open warrant to arrest former Sri Lankan Ambassador to United States Of America Jaliya Wikramasuriya who had ignored the court over involving in a financial fraud while he was the Ambassador.

The Former Ambassador Wikramsuriya was arrested by the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division and later remanded over cheating US Dollars 130,000 belonging t Sri Lankan government when purchasing a new building for the Sri Lankan Embassy in USA during his tenure.

However he was later released on bail due to medical reasons .But as he avoided appearing before the court on 17th of November last year for a case filed against him regarding the fraud Colombo Fort  Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne had issued the open warrent t arrest him and produce before the court.

The court also ordered the four persons including the wife of Former Ambassador Wikramsuriya who had signed his bail application to appear before the court on  16th of February .

A Female Was Critically Injured After Colliding With A Train

A female was critically injured and hospitalized after
colliding with a train transporting goods from  Nawalapitiya to Nanu Oya at malliappu railway cross road on Hatton-Nuwara-Eliya main road this evening (04).

The injured female was admitted to Dikoya Base Hospital and later transfered to Nawalapitiya Base Hospital for further treatment.

According to the railway gate keeper the female who is a resident of Hatton area had asked him whether a train arrived at that time just before the incident.

Hatton Police are investigating on the incident.

Two Suspects Arrested Over The Death Of A British National Were Remanded

The two suspects arrested over the death of a 37 year
old British National whose body was recovered in a ground at Maligawatte were remanded until 15th of January by the Colombo Additional Magistrate today (04).

The suspects were remanded adter being produced before the court today by Maligawatte  and the Additional Magistrate has ordered to produce one suspect for an identification parade.

Maligawatte Police had informed the Court that inquiry is underway regarding the death of the British national as the Police has suspected the death may be a murder.

Government has signed a memorandum of
understanding (MOU)with the Sri Lanka Institute Of Information Technology (SLIIT) which is a private non profitable degree awarding institute in Sri Lanka to form a non profitable institute awarding a  medical degree by abolishing the SAITM (Malabe Private Medical Collage) on 30th of December 2017 the Government Information Departm
ent has announced.

Accordingly the newly formed Medical Degree Institute will be recruited the current SAITM students and will be received  an approval from Sri Lanka Medical Council for it's Medical Degree.

The Institute will recruit new students from 2019 the Information Department has stated.
