Supreme Court To Go Ahead With MP Weerawansha's Petition Against VAT Increase
The Supreme Court has today(01)decided to consider the petition filed by National Freedom Front leader MP Wimal Weerawansha by seeking an order to revoke the government's decision to increase the value added tax(VAT).
The petition which was filed by MP Weerawansha and two others has seeking an interim order from the court to prevent authorities from ordering the public to pay VAT.The petition also argued that a parliamentary approval is must before the VAT increased.
The government has increased the VAT by 4% from 11% to 15% with effect from 02nd of May 2016.

JVP MP Vijitha Herath Who Was Detained Regarding An Accident Acquitted From The Charges Of Driving Under Liqour Influence
The Propaganda Secretary of the leftist Jantha Wimukthi Peramuna(JVP) MP Vijitha Herath who was arrested by the Police Monday(30) night after his vehicle was crashed into a telephone pole in Rajagiriya(In Colombo)has been today(01) acquitted from the charges of driving under liquor influence by Colombo Traffic Court Magistrate.
However MP Herath was ordered to pay Rs.1500 fee for two other charges on failing to prevent an accident and damaging public property.
The Welikada Police have detained the MP Monday night soon after the accident but later released on police bail.
MP Herath has told the media earlier he was not under the liqour influence at the time of the accident and he lost the control of his vehicle while trying to save the life of a pedestrian who crossed the road unexpectedly.

Peoples Movement For The Rights Of Patients Requested President Sirisena To Intervene When Making Appointments To Independant Drug Regulatory Authority
The Peoples Movement For The Rights Of Patients has yesterday(31) made a written request from President Maithripala Sirisena to intervene and provide necessary facilities and powers to the Independent Drug Regulatory Authority to carry out their functions independently and more effectively.
The Movement has also urged the President to make all appointments to Drug Regulatory Authority according to the National Drug Policy Act as problems occurred regarding the chairman and chief executive officer posts of the Authority recently.
