Ministry Of Health Says Steps Have Been Taken To Minimize Spreading Of Infectious Diseases In Adverse Weather Affected Areas

The Ministry Of Health today said there is no threat on spreading Infectious Diseases amongst the People lives in the Areas affected by the Adverse weather conditions at present as the Ministry has taken necessary steps to prevent spreading of such diseases among them.

To prevent Infectious Diseases Ministry has already deployed five mobile teams to North Central and Eastern Provinces which are affected from the adverse weather.The Saudi Arabian Government is to send a team of Doctors to treat patients in affected areas and the United Nations fund For Population Activities(UFPA) has provided a specialized protective clothing kit for the use of pregnant mothers Ministry has stated.

Adverse Weather Killed 37 People And Left One And Half Million Homeless

According to the Disaster Management Center 37 people died and more than one and half million people are affected due to the adverse weather pattern prevails in most parts of the country.Also 5 Elephants died due to drowning in flood waters according to the sources.

The most affected area is Batticloe District in the Eastern Province.According to the Meteorological Department heavy showers will continue tomorrow too in the Northern.Eastern and North Central and Uva  Provinces.

Death Toll Due To The Adverse Weather Pattern Risen To 32


As the rainy and cold climatic weather pattern continues further in most parts of the Country the death toll due to the prevailed weather conditions risen to 32 today.Out of the total number of deaths reported so far 14 were reported from the worst ever flood hit area of Batticloe District in the Eastern Province according to the Disaster Management Center.

According to the Center 12 people were missing due to the floods condition and further 49 are got injured.

India,Canada And European Union To Supply Relief Items To Sri Lankan Flood Victims

Neighboring India,Canada and the European Union are came forward to supply relief to the flood effected people in the Country.


India  has already sent a consignment of relief material including ready to eat meals,Milk Powder,Baby Milk Formula,Salt,sugar and pulses according to the government sources.India already promised to send 25 metric tonnes of essential items including food ,water and medicine.sleeping mats ,water purifying tablets ,blankets and bed sheets to Sri Lanka.The second shipment is due to arrive in Monday

Meanwhile Indian High Commissioner Mr.Aloka De Kantha handed over the first consignment of essential items arrived from India today to the .Minister  Of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksha.

Over One Million People Affected And 27 Died Due To The Worst Ever Floods Hit Sri Lanka

 27 people died and over one million people were affected due to the worst ever floods from decades hit in most parts of the Island due to the heavy showers according to the Disaster Management Center.Disaster Management Center also said that there are 47 injuries and 12 people also missing due to the flood situation.

 More then half out of over one million people affected due to floods are from Batticloe District of the Eastern Province,As a request made by the government to the public on donating essential items to the flood victims donations of food,medicine and clothing are pour in to the centers which are collecting these items  to distribute amongst the affected people.







































34,105 Dengue Patients And 246 Dengue Deaths Reported From Sri Lanka Last Year

During last year 34,105 dengue patients were reported through out the island and  there were 246 deaths according to the Epidemiology  Unit.Out of the total number of dengue patients reported the highest number  of 858 patients were reported from Jaffna District followed by 608 patients from Gampaha in the Western Province and 584 patients from Colombo .

The Highest Death toll which is 58 deaths were reported from Colombo District followed by 34 deaths reported from Gampaha District according to the Epidemiology Unit.

Meanwhile The Colombo Chief MOH Dr.Pradeep Karyawasam has said today that 48 dengue cases were reported during the 14 days of this month so far from the city of Colombo.He appealed the public to be on alert on dengue epidemic as it is in rise due to the   rainy weather pattern prevails in the country these days.Public are advised to follow precautionary measures including cleaning the dengue mosquito breeding places and destroying the mosquito breeding elements like empty cans,plastic cups,coconut/king coconut combs etc to avoid spreading of  dengue.

UNICEF And Epidemeology Unit To Launch Series Of Public Awareness Programmes On Immunization

The UNICEF and the Epidemiology Unit in Sri Lanka jointly planning to launch an  island wide public awareness campaign on the National Immunization Programme begins from 24th of January.


The inaugural Programme of this Campaign is due to be held in Nugegoda in the Colombo Suburbs on 24 th of this month with participation of Media Personal and the Health Minister  UNICEF Office in Colombo has announced today.

Met Department Stated That The Cold Climate Will Prevails Till End Of February

The Meteorological Department has stated that the Cold Climate prevails in most parts of the Country will lasted till end of February.

The Temperatures in most  areas  including Colombo,Negambo,Kandy,Nuwra Eliya,Batticloe and Anuradhapura  goes down and remained well below the body temperature.The temperature in the Nuwara Eliya which normally has a cold temperature during  this season of the year dropped sharply to 7.9 degrees Celsius according to the Meteorological Department

The Temperature in Colombo District too stands around 61 years low to 18.8   Degrees Celsius while the temperature in Kandy too dropped below 20 Degrees Celsius and the temperature in Batticloe in Eastern Province dropped to 16.9 Degrees Celsius.

It has been believe that the Cold Wave prevails in most parts in India make an impact towards the cold climate here.Besides the Cold Weather Heavy Showers continues in Eastern Province while most of the other parts in the country passed without a sun shine these days.

Colombo Health Department To BanTube Well Water In Eating Houses

The Colombo Public Health Department has completely banned the using of   tube well water by the Hotels and Eating Houses situated  in Colombo City with immediate effect .According the Chief Medical Officer In Health(MOH) in the Colombo City Dr.Pradeep Kariyawasam the Colombo Public Health Department will take a legal action against those Hotels and Eating Houses who are using the Tube well water as it proved that the water is polluted.



According the Dr.Kariyawasam around 25 percent out of  around 1000 Hotels and Eating Houses situated in the City are getting the water for their activities through Tube Wells.Around 46.7 percent of the water used by these eating houses are polluted according to the surveys.

Swiss Authorities Arrested 10 LTTE Members Who Involved In Sending Money To The Organization

Swiss Prosecutors today said that they have arrested 10 LTTE members who are suspected as transferring money to the Terrorist Organization LTTE and having membership of the Organization.

Authorities said that the suspects were involved in collecting several million Swiss Franks for the LTTE during past years  forcibly taken from the Sri Lankans living abroad.They were arrested during a search operation in 23 premises around the country it has been reported.

The Death Toll Due To Floods Risen To 18- 47 Injuries Reported

The death toll due to the floods occurred as a result of the heavy showers prevails in the island now reached to 18 and there are 47 injured persons so far according to the National Disaster Management Center.According the Center the number of displaced persons reported up to now is nearly 970,000 .

The Director General of the Disaster Management Center Major General Gamini Hetiarachchi has said that 11,388 homes have been partly damaged while 1609 houses have been damaged fully,Around 200 tanks too damaged due to the floods according to him.

The Meteorological Department meanwhile said that the heavy showers prevails in most parts of the Country will continue another few days and declared that  this is the worst ever showers experienced by the country from thirty years.

Adverse Weather- Authorities Issued Land Slides Warning To Ten Districts

As heavy showers continues in most parts of the island today as well The National Building Research Organization(NBRO) today issued warnings of Land Slide to Ten Districts .The ten districts received the land slide warnings including the districts of Matale,Badulla and Kandy in the Hill Country.

According to the NBRO the poorly built constructions in the sloped areas of these districts contributes heavily towards the reported land slides so far.

Education Ministry To Close Schools In Eastern Province And Kandy Due To Bad Weather

The Education Ministry has decided to closed all Schools in Eastern Province for Five days starting tomorrow and Schools in Kandy tomorrow due to the adverse weather conditions prevails in these areas.

Earth Slip In Hill Capital Buried 14 People - 4 Died And 3 Are Still Missing

14 people were buried under the rubble and 7 of them rescued due to a Huge Earth Slip taken place in Gatambe of the hill capital Kandy District this morning.Another 4 bodies buried under the rubble were recovered by this eve and 3 are still missing according to the Police..The rescued persons were admitted to the Kandy General Hospital for treatment.

A huge rock was toppled on few houses situated in Deveni Rajasinha Road near Gatambe area and abandoned the area.

Health Minister Crticizing The Medical Officers Consuming Flour Based Food Items While Advising Public Not To Consume Them

Health Minister Maithrepala Sirisena has criticizing  the Medical Officers attached to the Ministry Of Health who are advising the public not to consume food made from flour and sugary drinks prone to non infectious diseases like Diabetes.Heart Diseases and Obesity while serve and consuming such food after seminars and workshops.

Health Minister said that the Doctors should act exemplary  to public when consuming food.
He made these remarks when he was invited by the Director General of Health Services Dr.Ajith Mendis for tea after a programme held on "Non Infectious Diseases " in Colombo last Tuesday and witness the Tea Table prepared for the occasion.The table compromised with short eats made from flour like Rolls,Patty,Sandwiches and Icing Cake with  serving Sugary Drink

After witnessing the Tea Table and the Medical Officers Minister loudly said that Those Doctors who advised the public not to consume these food items now seen consuming it and left the place without consuming any food.After Minister left the scene the Medical Officers who are eating Short Eats served were seen stop eating.





WHO Donated A Stock Of "Tami Flu "Drug For Treating Children With H1N1

The World Health Organization (WHO) has donated 100,000 capsules of the drug" Tami flu" to Sri Lanka this morning to treat small children suffering from H1N1.WHO resident representative here Dr.FR Mehtha handed over the drug stock to Health Minister Maithrepala Sirisena which contained 30 and 40 mili gramme Tamiflu Capsules.

Earlier WHO donated Tami flu Capsules for the use of Adult H1N1 Patients to the Medical Supplies Division.Meanwhile the H1N1 Vaccine "Panvax" which distributed to Government Hospitals and MOH Offices to vaccinate risk groups are due to get expired tomorrow(07th) according to the Ministry Sources.

Imported Stock Of 4 Million Eggs To Be Distributed To The Market

Minister Of Corporatives and Internal Trade Johnston Fernando has ordered the officials to distribute the stock of 4 million Eggs imported to Sri Lanka from India to the market .An Egg belongs to this stock will be sold Rs.11 each through the Laksathosa Outlets.

This stock of Eggs imported to Sri Lanka to reduced the sky rocketing prices of Eggs in the Local Market.Currently an Egg is sold between Rs.16-18 in the Local Market.

Government To Stop Importing Carbon Fertilizer

Government has decided to stop importing Carbonic Fertilizer in the view of increasing local Fertilizer Production according to the Minister of Farming and Wild Life S.M Chandresena.According to the Minister that the Government will produced Fertilizer locally which are used to grow  crops like tea and rubber and also manufacture Fertizer for Fruits and Flower Cultivations also in the future he added.

Health Officials Instructed Hospital Directors And MOH'S To Finish Vaccinating The Remained H1N1 Vaccines Before 07th Of January

Health Officials instructed  all Hospital Directors and MOH'S to finish vaccinating the remained stock of H1N1 Vaccines which are due to   expire  this month before this  Friday(07th) according the Health Ministry Sources.

Meanwhile the senior doctors are questioning on what  basis the health officials said that the remained stock of vH1N1 Vaccines expire in 07th of January as it didn't mention in the vaccine packs.In these packs it only mentioned that these vaccines will expire in 11/01 they stressed.

Doctors also taking note that While Health Officials clearly said that the batch of H1N1 Vaccines used for vaccination last December  expired in 31st of December although it didn't mentioned in the pack and it is a puzzle how can they mention the vaccine stock due to expire this month will exactly expire on 07th

Ministry Of Health To Charge A Treatment Fee From Accident Patients With Liquor Influence

Ministry of Health has decided to charge a treatment fee from the accident patients with influence of liquor who got admitted to state hospitals within next two weeks according the Health Minister Maithrepala Sirisena.Health Minister has further added that if a doctor at the state hospital confirmed that a patient who got admitted to state hospital due to an accident is with influence of liquor he will be subjected to pay the treatment fee immediately.

Health Ministry is to issue a circular regarding charging a treatment fee from accident patients within next two weeks he stressed.

Health Minister Maithrepala Sirisena has clearly stated during a function in Kandy last year that A treatment fee will charged from the patients seeking treatment for Alcohol related illnesses from this January,Instead of giving an exact date to implement this plan Ministry Of Health has said that this plan will implement within this month.

Minister Of Internal Trade Johnston Fernando has said today that there will be no hike in the Gas Prices from midnight today even one gas company requested a Rs.235 gas price hike.To keep gas prices unchanged government has decided to remove all taxes imposed on gas cylinder he stressed during a press briefing held in Colombo today.

Ministry Of Health To Received New Stock Of AH1N1 Vaccines Soon

Ministry of Health to received 500,000 stock of AH1N1 Vaccines through the World Health Organization(WHO) in coming weeks according to the Ministry Sources.The Stock of 1.5 million AH1N1 Vaccines received last year are due to get expired on 31st of December this year.

Meanwhile the Ministry Of Health has planned to use the old stock of AH1N1 Vaccines which are  due to expired in few days time to vaccinate pregnent mothers and the devotees arrived at Kataragama Religious site these days.

President Mahinda Rajapaksha Extended The Price Relief Formula For Electricity Consumers By 30 Units

President Mahinda Rajapaksha has today instructed the officials of Ceylon Electricity Board(CEB) to extend the price relief formula offered to the electricity consumers to 120 units from  90 units which has earlier stated.President Rajapksha has earlier announced during his 2011 Budget Speech that a 8 percent tariff hike will be imposed on electricity consumers who are using more then 90 units of electricity.


However the Schools,Hospitals and Religious Centers are excluded from that tariff hike.According the Power and Energy Ministry 4.2 million electricity consumers will not subjected for a 8 percent traffic hike after the 120 unit price formula plan implemented.

Ministry Of Health To Instruct Shop,Transport And Telephone Booth Owners To Clean Their Premises To Prevent H1N1

Ministry of  Health has decided to advise all the Shop,Common Transport Services  and Common Telephone Booth owners to clean their apartments including the Stair Cases   by using Germ Killers in order to prevent the spreading of H1N1 INFLUENZA among the community.It has been reported that so far around 340 H1N1 infected people were reported from the Country and there were 25 deaths.

Health Minister Maithrepala Sirisena today instructed the Health Ministry Officials to take all precautionary measures to prevent the possible out break of H1N1 in the country.

Export Earnings And Import Expenditure Increased During First Ten Months Of This Year

According to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka export earnings of the Country  during  first ten months of year 2010 has been increased by 13.2 percent with earnings worth US Dollars 6,505 million .Meanwhile the Importing Expenditure rose by 8.4 percent as the Country spent US Dollars 1131 million to Import essential items.

A Part Of The Galle Road In Colombo Caved In For The Second Time

A part of the Galle Road near Roxy Cinema Hall in Wellawatta (in Colombo) caved in again today after it caved in on 04th of May in the year 2007.Due to this Road Traffic which lasted few hours occurred in the area this noon according to the sources.

Junior Medical Adminstrators/Consultants Feared Over The Service Extensions Of Their Senior Counterparts

Junior Medical Administrators and Consultants working in Outstations feared that they will not able to get transfers to  the State Hospitals in Colombo and Suburbs from some time as Some Senior Medical Administrators  attached to  Major Hospitals in Colombo who reached the retirement age applied for service extensions.

According to the Health Ministry Sources Few Medical Administrators who are already reached the retirement age of 60 applied for service extensions already.It has been reported that if these Medical Administrators getting the requisite Service Extensions a group of senior consultants working in Colombo based state hospitals who also reached the retirement age  too planning to apply for Service Extensions.If such a thing happened Junior Consultants working in outstation hospitals will not able to get transfers to Colombo from some time the Health Ministry sources stressed.

The sources further added that some senior Medical Administrators who are closed to retirement age already begun to go after Cabinet Ministers to get some political backing to extend their service period.

Power And Energy Minister Critcised the Proposed Visit Of UN Expert Panel

The Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka has strongly opposing the proposed visit of  Expert Panel appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to investigate alleged war crimes against Sri Lanka.The UN Expert Panel members are due to visit Sri Lanka and give the evidence before Lessons Learnet and Reconciliation .



Health Ministry To Charge A Treetment Fee From Alochol Related Non Communicable Disease Patients From 01st Of January

The Ministry Of Health has decided to charge a fee from all the patients who are admitted to the State Run Hospitals for Alcohol realted Non Communicable Diseases as a Treetment fee with effect from 01st of January 2011.The aim of this move is to deter the Alochol use amongst the public according the Ministry Sources.

Health Minister Maithrepala Sirisena has already submitted a Cabinet Paper to the Cabinet in this regard according the sources.

It has been reported that the Government has spend Rs.90 million annualy to treet Non Commuinicable Diseases like Stroke,Heart Diseases,Diabetese,Kidney Diseases and High Blood Preasure and majority of these Patients got the Disease due to Alcohol Consumption.

Around 80 percent of the Non Communicable Disease Patients reported from Sri Lanka are belongs to the age group of 40 -55 sources further added.

Plantation Company To Sell Coconuts For Cheep Prices To The Colombo Residents

Plantation company in Chilaw has decided to sell Coconuts to the residents of Colombo and the suburbs for cheep prices during this festive season.According to the president of the Company Dr.Sunil Jayasekera they will sell the coconuts Rs.32-35 per nut to the residents in mentioned areas.

At present Coconuts are selling for Rs.44-60 per nut in  the Open Market.

Sri Lankan Air Lines Commenced Their Flights To London

Although Heath row Air Port in London not commenced their daily routine flights to other destinations after  temporarily shut down it due to the heavy snow fall yesterday Sri Lankan Air Lines commenced their Flights to London this morning.After the Heath row officials announced the shut down of the Air Port yesterday Sri Lankan Air Lines too suspended their flights to London.

However even the Heath Row Air Port not commenced their routine flights Sri Lankan Air Lines announced that they commenced their flights to London.
