Newly Elected President Will Be Sworn In Tomorrow(21) At Parliament

Newly elected President Ranil Wikramasinghe iis scheduled to be sworn in as the President of Sri Lanka tomorrow (21) at the Parliament Building in capital Colombo ..



Delivering a speech at the Parliament this morning  after being elected  as the 08th Executive President of Sri Lanka ,President Ranil Wikramasinghe has made a special appeal from all the factions to come together to implement a new mechanism to solve the problems faced by people of the country .

"Sri Lanka is currently under economic crisis and youth are demanding a system change to overcome this crisis  .People are not demanding us to do old politics anymore   and what   they want is all the  parties to come together and work with unity .All the factions in the Parliament including the other two contestants who contested with  me at the President's race MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Opposition LeaderSajith Premadasa   should join hands with me to implement a new mechanism to overcome the current crisis faced by  the country " he has stressed . 

Ranil Wikramasinghe Elected As The New President Of Sri Lanka

 Acting President Ranil Wikramaisnghe has been elected as the 08th executive president of Sri Lanka this morning (20)  through  a secret ballot held among MP's of the Parliament  .



Out of the 225 MP's who are eligible to vote in the Parliamentary vote  held this morning ,134 had voted in favor of the Acting President Wikramasinghe and 82 had voted in favor of  MP Dallas Alahapperuma who has represented the governing Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP)  party. Only  03 had voted for the leader of the leftist Jathika JanaBalawegaya Party, Anura Kumara Dissanayake .

Earlier Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa had withdrawn his candidature from the President's race  to support the candidate of governing party Dallas Alahapperuma .After this  move many have predicted MP Alahapperuma will win the race with the support of Main opposition party Samagi Janabalawegaya (SJB ) lead by Sajith Premadasa and other Tamil and Muslim Minority parties which had pledged their support to him .

However Many in the governing party which was formed by Ousted Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaskhe and his brother former finance minister Basil Rajapaskhe had voted in favor of Acting President Ranil Wikramasinghe .

University Students Protest Held Against Acting President Ranil Wikramasinghe

 Students attached to the Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) had conducted a Protest campaign in front of the Colombo Fort Railway station this morning (19) demanding the resignation of Acting President Ranil Wikramasinghe from his post .


University Students as well as members of Trade unions and Social activists had participated in this  protest .

A New Party Had Been Formed To Represent Galle Face Protesters

 A group of Protesters  representing  the Galle Face Protesters had yesterday (18) submitted relevant documents to the Elections Commission for registering a new political party under the name  "Public Protesting  Citizens "(Jana Aragala Purawasiyo).



The new party is being registered to represent the Galle face protesters the General Secretary of the newly formed party Chanaka Bandara has stated .

Acting President Declared Stare Of Emergency In The Island

 Acting President Ranil Wikramasinghe had issued an extra ordinary Gazette notification yesterday (18) declaring a State Of Emergency in the island with immediate effect . 


The State of Emergency had been declared  in the island in the interests of Public security ,The protection of Public order and the maintenance of Supplies and services essential to the life of the community Acting President has stated .President can declare the State of Emergency in terms of article 40(1)(C) of the constitution by virtue of the power vested in him by the section 2 of the Public Security Ordinance(Chapter 40)  as amended by Act No.8 of 1959 ,Law No.6 of 1978 and Act No 28 of 1988 .
