Voting Of The Local Government Elections Has Concluded-Overall Voter Turnout Exceeds 60%-Counting Had Begun

As the voting of the local government elections-2018 
concluded at 4 p.m this evening more than 60% overall voter turnout have been reported from 24 districts in the Island according to the Election Offficials.


The voter turnout of the Colombo District stil, not yet been announced.Voter turnouts of 24 Districts in the island of today's election stands at 4 p.m are as follows.

Gampaha 75%,Hambanthota 80%,Matale 80%,Nuwara Eliya 70%,Polonnaruwa 75%,Galle 75%,Matara 7o%,Kalutara 80%,Kurunagala 78%,Anuradhapura 85%,Kegalle 70%,Ratnapura 75-80%,Kandy 65%,Kilinochchi 76%,Jaffna 70%,Batticaloa 75%,Trincomalee 85%,Mulathivu 78%,Badulla 65+,Monaragala 80%,Vavuniya 72%,Puttalam 73%,Ampara 70% and Mannar 77%.

The voting of the Local government elections was held to appoint 8328 members to the 340 local government bodies including 24 Municipal Councils,41 Urban Councils and 275 Pradeshiya sabhas.

Around 57,097 candidates representating 43 registered political parties and 222 Independent Groups have been contested for this election .

The voting was held from 7 a.m to 4 p.m today in 13,374 polling stations throughout the Island  and 10.5 million voters were eligible to cast their  votes.

The chairman of the Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya has stated that the Ballot boxes were already transported to the 9000 counting centers situated throughout the Island and Counting has already begun.

The results of the 75% of the polling divisions can be announced by 9 p.m he has stated.The final election result is expected to be  announced  around 12 noon tomorrow (11) the Chairman of the Elections Commission has stressed.

A Person Was Sentenced A 10 Year Rigorous Imprisonment Over Raping A School Girl

Rathnapura High Court has sentenced a person who
found guilty over raping of a 14 year old school girl brutally in December 2009 at Balangoda area ,a 10 year rigorous imprisonment yesterday (09).

The High Court has also ordered the accused who is a resident in Balangoda area to pay a compansation of Rs.100,000 to the victim.

The girl was abducted and raped by the accused while she was on the way home after  school was over.

Attorney General had filed indictments in high court against the accused who had earlier stated that he was not guilty for the charges but later accepted that  he had committed the crime.



A Person Was Arrested While Transporting A Stock Of Waste Tea

Police have arrested a person while transporting a
stock of Waste Tea weighing 267 Kilo Grammes in a Cab at Puhulpola area in Welimada last Thursday (08).

The suspect was a 18 year old resident in Guruthalawa area.


A Person Was Arrested With A Haul Of Heroin

Modara Police have arrested a person with 2.950
grammes of Heroin in his possession near the Randiya Housing Scheme in Modara area.

The arrest was made as per an information received by the Police.

A Candidate Contesting For The Local Government Elections Was Arrested While Distributing Leaflets With Party Symbol

A candidate who is contesting for the Local
government elections scheduled to be held today (10) was arrested yesterday (09)by the Chilaw Police while illegally  distributing a stock of leaflets printed with his party symbol and vote among the public at punchivilakkuwa in Chilaw .

Twenty two leaflets and two calenders printed with  party symbol of the candidate were also taken in to custody in possession of him by the Police.

The suspect is due to be produced before the Chilaw Magistrate Court.

The election publicity activities had concluded on wednesday (07)and involving in an activities related to election publicity after that date banned by the Elections Department.
