Deputy Government Printer Ganga Kalpani Liyanage Has Been Appointed As New Government Printer

Government has appointed the Deputy Government  Printer Gangani Kalpana Liyanage as the new Government Printer with effect from yesterday(15).

Ms.Liyanage who had served the Department Of Government Printing around three decades had replaced the  acting Government Printer B.K.S Ravindra .

One Youth Was Killed And Two Others Injured Due To A Car They Were In Crashed At Rathgama

One youth was killed and two youths were injured and hospitalized in the wee hours of this  morning as a car they were travelling in crashed in to a wall and a telephone post in Rathgama (Southern Province) area on Colombo-Galle main road it has been reported.

The accident has occurred while the three youths were on their way to Galle after attending a function held at a hotel in Hikkaduwa along with a group of their friends according to the Police.

The critically Injured  two youths  were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.The body of the 26 year old deceased youth was also sent to the same hospital .

The car which was driven in high speed at the time of the. accident was damaged severely  the Police have stated.

The driver of the car had fled away from the scene soon after  the acc
ident and Rathgama  police have launched an investigations to arrest the driver.

Three Went Missing And One Person Was Rescued And Hospitalized While Drowning In Panadura Sea Area

Four persons who went swimming in the sea off Panadura (In Colombo) had swept away this evening due to strong sea currents and three of them went missing believed to be drowned according to the reports.

One person out of the four that swept away due to the sea currents is being rescued  while drowning and he was admitted to the Psnadura Hospital for treatment the Panadura Police have stated.

Police have launched rescue operations to find three missing persons.

Government Has Increased The Special Commodity Levy Imposed On Raw Sugar And White Sugar

The special commodity levy imposed on raw (Brown)sugar has been increased by Rs.15 per kilo gramme and imported white sugar by Rs.2 per kilo gramme with effect from today (16) the government has announced.

However the price of white sugar will remain as Rs.95 per Kilo Gramme the government has stated.Government has earlier reduced the special commodity levy imposed on white sugar and increased the levy imposed on raw sugar. As a result of this the local consumers are induced to consume more white sugar than raw sugar.

The consumption of sugar in Sri Lanka is 31 kilo grammes per person and due to this  Health Minister  has made a proposal to the Cabinet recently to increase the price of white sugar by considering the  increased number of Diabetic patients in Sri Lanka which opposed by many the Ministry of Health has announced.

The annual import of sugar in Sri Lanka is 650,000 metric tonnes which is  92 percent of the total local requirement and the annual sugar production  in Sri Lanka is 56,000 metric tonnes which is only 8 percent of the local requirement according to reports.

Government has earned a revanue of  Rs.19,500 million annually through the special commodity levy imposed on sugar it has been reported.
