United National Party (UNP) Has Secured 106 Parliamentary Seats At The Election To Form Next Government

According to the final result of the Sri Lankan Parliamentary Election held yesterday(17) the United National Party(UNP) has secured 106 Parliamentary Seats including 93 members elected through the vote and 13 members from National List with 5,098,927 Votes (45.66%) and in a position to form the next government.

The other major party United Peoples Freedom Alliance(UPFA) chaired by President Maithripala Sirisene has managed to secure 95 Parliamentary Seats in the election with 83 members elected through the vote and 12 elected through the National List.UPFA has received  a total number of 4,732,669 votes (42.38%)at the election.

The Tamil National Alliance(TNA) has became the third major force in the Parliament by securing 16 Parliamentary Seats including 14 through vote and 2 seats through the national list.TNA which contested for the North And Eastern Provinces has received 515,963 votes(4.62%) .

The leftist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna(JVP) has secured  6 seats including 4 through the vote and 2 seats through the National List .At the last Parliament the JVP had only 3 members.

The Elections Commissioner is due to made a statement regarding the Election after  releasing the  final  preference votes list of the  candidates .

"There Are No Winners Or Losers In This Election.Lets Develop The country Together" -Newly Elected Prime Minister Ranil Wikaramasinghe

The Prime Minister Ranil Wikramasinghe has said today(18) through a special statement that "There are no winners or losers in this election .Let's develop the country together as a one family". 

Prime Minister wikramasinghe who is also to be sworn in as the newly elected Prime Minister today (18) has also invited all to join hands with the government to build an ethical country with a new political culture.He has thanked all those who have assisted  to conduct a free and fair election.

"Lets work together as the children of one mother for the betterment of the country" Prime Minister has further added.

According to the election results released so far the United National Party(UNP) has secured 92 seats of the 225 member Sri Lankan Parliament and the United Peoples Freedom Alliance(UPFA) has managed to secure 83 seats.The leftist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna(JVP) has secured 4 seats.

Out of the Parliament's 225 members 196 members elected through the election and remaining 29 members  elected through the national list.

Former President Mahinda Rajapakshe And Pivithuru Hela Urumaya Leader Gammanpila Have Accepted The Election Defeat Of UPFA

Both the former president Mahinda Rajapakshe and UPFA (United Peoples Freedom Alliance) candidate Udaya Gammanpila have accepted the election defeat of UPFA according to the election results released so far.

The former president and election campaign leader of UPFA Mahinda Rajapakshe has told the french news agency AFP early this morning that he will accept the defeat of UPFA at the Parliamentary Election according to the election results declared  up to this morning." My dream of becoming the  Prime Minister has faded away .It was a tough fight we  carried out during the election campaign" the former President  has stated.

Meanwhile the UPFA candidate for the Colombo District and the leader of Pivithuru Hela Urumaya Udaya Gammanpila has said that although he has accepted the defeat of UPFA the struggle they launched during the election campaign will continue .

Although non of the major party able to secure majority seats in the Parliament  the United National Party (UNP) can form a minority government per the latest election results,UNP has won 11 districts and UPFA  9 districts according to the election results declared up to this morning.

Voting Of The Parliamentary Election Was Conducted In Peaceful Manner- President/ Elections Commissioner

Both the President Maithrpala Sirisene and Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya have admitted  today that the Sri Lankan Parliamentary Election which concluded this evening was conducted in peaceful manner and no major incidents have reported.

Voters have actively participated in casting
their votes at the election and in most of the areas the voter turnout stands more then 70% according to Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya.
