Cabinet Approved A Proposal To Ban Chewing And Selling Betel Leaves And Related Ingredients In Public Institutions

Cabinet has yesterday (12)approved a proposal submitted on issuing a Government circular to ban chewing and selling of Betel leaves,tobacco leaves and Areca nut products in Government instititutional premises

Health Minister Dr.Rajitha Senaratne had submitted the proposal in aim of preventing betel chewing among public to prevent spreading of Oral cancer caused due to Betel chewing according to Health Ministry.

Around 2500 Oral Cancer patients are being reported from Sri Lanka annually and in accordance to a survey conducted in 2015 around 26 percent among males and 5 percent among females of the age group 18-65 have been identified as non tobacco  smokers .

Due to spit after chewing betel leaves  caused enviornment Minister has stressed.

World Health Organization has named every ingredient in betel leaves mixture including Betel leaves as cancer agents .

Cabinet Approved A Price Formula For Imported Milk Powder

Cabinet has yesterday (12) approved a
prosposal submitted by the Minister of Agriculture P.Harrison to implement a price formula for imported Milk Powder .

The proposal had submitted accordance to the recommendation of the committee appointed to look in to the prices of imported milk powder. It is due to be implemented through Consumer Affairs Authority.Milk Powder companies importing Milk Powder had earlier requested   permission from  government  to increase the price of their Milk Powder.

As government has  not allowed the companies to  increase the Milk powder prices,  Imported Milk powder companies have decided not to clear the imported milk powder stocks from Colombo Harbour .As a result a milk powder shortage has  been created in the country during last few days .

In Accordance with the  price formula prices of imported milk powder will be decided based on the international Market prices.

A Person.Was Killed And Two Children Had Been Injured Due To Train -Motor Car Collision

A person had been killled and two
children had been critically injured and hospitalized after the Motor Car they were travelling in colliding with the "Ruhunu Kumari"Train travelling from Galle to Colombo at an unprotected Railway crossing in Pamburana ,Matara this morning (13).

The critically injured children had been admitted to Matara General Hospital for treatmemt .

The incident occurred when the Motor Car attempted to  across the railway crossing at the time train was proceeding .

Matara Police are conducting an investigation over the incident.
