One Out Of Eight Sri Lankans Estimated As Suffering From Some Kind Of Mental Disorder

Image result for depressionOne out of eight persons in Sri Lanka estimated as suffering from some kind of mental disorder and majority of them are suffering from Depression  according to the Mental Health Officer attached to the World Health Organization(WHO) Dr.Suveen Thirapaty.

However only 40% of the locals suffering from mental disorders  are seeking treatment for the diseases at present and the majority of 60% avoid treatment he has stressed.

Addressing a media seminar held on "Depression" last morning(29) in Government Information Department in Narahenpita (Colombo) Dr.Thirapaty has stated that around 80,000 Sri Lankans annually getting Depression   and around 800,000 are currently living with the disease .

Depression affected females more than men and there's no barrier for the disease as anyone at any age can get it Dr.Thirapaty stated.

Addressing the seminar Psychiatrist Dr.Niel Fernando has said that by identifying the disease earlier Depression can be cured without any medication  and people with Depression normally have several of the following symptoms for at least two weeks-

The symptoms are-
Sadness,Loss of Energy,A Change in appetite and or weight loss,sleeping more or less,anxiety,reduced concentration,indecisiveness,restlessness,feelings of worthlessness/guilt/hoplessness ,irritability,thought of self harm or suicide ,loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities ,Aches,pains,headaches,cramps or digestive problems without a clear physical cause that do not ease with treatment.

The best way to avoid Depression is to talk to someone you trust (A family member or a friend ) about your feelings he has stressed.Eat regularly and engage in exercises regularly including a short walk  are also helpful to avoid the disease he said.

Depression can be defeated Dr.Fernando has said while giving the names of some famous people who managed to overcome the disease like Abraham Lincoln,Princess Diana,Beethoven,Sir Vincent Churchill and local film personality Anoja Weerasinghe.

Four Persons Injured And Hospitalized Due To Lightning

Image result for lightningFour persons including three children were injured and admitted to the Balangoda Base Hospital last evening(29) due to a lightning struck ed on them in Batugammana ,Balangoda area.

There were  two one year and eight month old children among the injured it has been revealed.

A Sudden Fire Erupted In A Motor Vehicle Yard In Angoda Doused

Image result for fireFew old motor vehicle spare parts were destroyed due to a sudden fire erupted in a Motor Vehicle yard in Angoda (Colombo)last night(29) .

The fire brigade officials attached to the Kotte Urban Council along with the residents of the area have doused the fire before spreading it further.It is believed that a repair done to the electrical circuit in the yard may have caused the fire.

Joint Opposition MP Wimal Weerawansha Has Ended His Fast In Colombo National Hospital

Joint Opposition MP and leader of the National Freedom Front Wimal Weerawansha who had commenced a fasting campaign nine days ago while in Welikada Prison  has ended his fast today(30) as per a requests made by the chief incumbents of Ramanna and Siyam Chapters ( maha nikaya's ) it has been reported.

The MP who had been transferred  to the Colombo National Hospital yesterday(29) from Welikada Prisons Hospital as a result of his poor health caused due to the fast ended his fast after drinking a glass of milk provided by the chief incumbents of the said Buddhist chapters.

MP Weerawansha was arrested on 10th of January by the Police financial crimes investigations division(FCID) after recorded a statement from him over an alleged misuse of state owned vehicles during the previous regime.He was further remanded until 03rd of April.

MP has commenced a fasting campaign against refusing his revised bail application by the Colombo High Court .The second revised bail application filed by MP Weerawansha is due to be considered by the High Court on 03rd of April.

Sri Lankan Health Minister Left The Island To Attend Global Ministerial Summit On Patient Safety Held In Germany

Minister of Health Dr.Rajitha senaratne left the island
to attend  second Global Ministerial  Summit on patient safety  held in Bonn,Germany.

Health Ministers of 25 countries are participating in the Summit which will be concluded today(30).

Sri Lankan Health Minister is due to meet Secretary of state to Health  in Britain jeramy hunt today (30) and brief him on the Health development activities of the country.
