Shell Gas Price up by Rs.126

Shell gas to increase the 12.5 kg gas cylinder by Rs.126 with the effect from Midnight today(31).The new price will be Rs.1863.Consumer Affairs Authority is approved the price increase.However it is reported that Shell Gas requested from the authority a price increase of Rs.244.60 .
In part of the Shell Gas Company's decision to increase the price of a Gas Cylinder the Laugfs also requested the Consumer Authority a Price Increase of Rs.192.45 for their Gas Cylinder which is yet to be considered by the Authority.

Bomb Blast in Fort area injured 45 people


Sri Lankan Capital Colombo Rocks today after a Bomb Blast occurred in the Fort area this noon Injuring 45 people .Three of the injured were in a serious condition. most of the Injured who were admitted to the Accident Service of the National Hospital suffering Minor Injuries from burns and the blast shock waves according to the Hospital Sources.No deaths were reported.
This is the first Bomb Blast occurred in the Colombo City since 16th of May this year when a Suicide Bomb Claimed 12 lives including 8 police officers and injuring 85 people.Eye Witnesses said that Suddenly a big sound was heard and people screamed and ran in all directions.Fort area was crowded during the weekends due to the shoppers.the bomb identified as a small one and it was placed near an Apple Vendor.

Govt.expenditure on Drugs are on increase


The Expenditure on Drugs Imported for the State Hospitals this year has increased to Rs.2500 Million compared to the last year according to the Dr.Hemantha Benaragama the director of the Medical Supplies Division.Last year Government spent Rs.10,500 Million for Importing Drugs for the State Hospitals and for this year Govt.spent Rs.13,000 Million.
Due to the opening of New Hospitals and New Hospital Wards and Units the requirement of Drugs for the Hospitals are on increase and due to this Govt.need to spend an extra amount of money to purchasing Drugs for the State Hospitals Dr.Benaragama Said.

Chaminda Vass took 400th ODI Wicket


Despite Sri Lankan Cricket team became losers in the one day match series against India sri lankan sports loving public have something to cheer about when Sri Lankan fast bowler Chaminda Vaas became fourth bowler in the history of one day cricket to take 400 wickets.He achieved this feet on a day night match against India last Wednesday when he had Indian batsman Yuvaraj Singh's wicket.Before Vaas Sri Lankan Off Spinner Muththayya Muralitharan,Pakistani Pace Bowlers Waqar Yunus and Wasim Akram achieved this feet.

Final Report on Expired Blood kits due to release in two weaks

The final report of the Inquiry on expired blood kits at the National Blood Center and other Provincial Blood Banks will handover to the Secretary of the Ministry of Health Dr.Athula Kahanda Liyanage from two weeks time Health Ministry Sources revealed today(26).Health Secretary will take disciplinary action according to the recommendations of this final report against those who found responsible for storing and using of the expired blood kits ministry sources said.
The Special Investigations Unit of the Ministry of Health is conducting this investigation.

CM candidates of the losing UNP secured highest number of preferential votes


Although the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance became the winner of the Sabaragamuwa and the North Central Provincial council elections the Chief Ministerial Candidates contesting these councils from the Opposition United National Party Ranjan Ramanayaka and Major General Janaka Perera obtained highest number of preferential votes among the candidates contested.
Ranjan Ramanayaka got 130,258 votes from the Sabaragamuwa Province while Major General Janaka Perera got 116,430 votes from the North Central Province.
The ruling Party's Chief Ministerial Candidate For the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council Mahipala Herath secured 98,120 votes and Berty Premalal got 105,588 votes from the North Central Province.

Sri Lanka's Ruling Party won Two provincial Councils with a clear majority


Ruling United People's Freedom Alliance(UPFA) Won both Sabaragamuwa and the North Central Provincial Councils with a clear Majority at the elections concluded on saturday. It wins all 27 electorates in the Rathnapura ,Kegalle, Anuradhapura and the Polonnaruwa Districts belong to the two provinces.In the Sabaragamuwa Provincial council Ruling UPFA got 47,2789 and secured 25 seats and the opposition United National Part Received 34,6321 votes and secured 17 seats in the Council.Peoples Liberation Front(JVP) received 19,068 votes and got 2 seats.
In the North Central Provincial Council UPFA received 30,7457 votes and secured 20 seats and the UNP received 20,5284 votes and got 12 seats. JVP received 26,738 votes with 1 seat.

Sabaragamuwa and North Central Provinces go for Poll tomorrow


The Provincial Council Elections for the Sabaragamuwa and the North Central Provincial Councils due to be held tomorrow(23).Around 2 million voters will cast their votes to appoint 77 councilors for the two Provincial Councils. 44 Councilors to be appointed for the Sabaragamuwa Provicial Council and 33 for the North Central Provincial Council from this election.12 political parties including the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance and the Main Opposition United National Party are contesting this Election.Elections Commissioner announced today that the Ballot Papers will not be issued to those who are unable to prove their Identity.

Director Of the National Blood Centre and another Doc Transfered over the Expired Blood Kits Case


Health Secretary Dr.Athula Kahanda Liyanage today transfered Dr.Mrs. R.M Bindusara the director of the National Blood Centre at Narahenpita and a Medical Officer of the Centre and interdicted two store keepers attached to the Blood Centre in the connection of storing and using the Expired Plasma Pherasis and A.Pherasis Blood Kits.Dr.Bindusara is transfered to the Family Health Bureau office in Colombo while Dr.Nazir attached to the Blood Centre transfered to the Angoda Mental Hospital.This action was taken according to the recommendations of the Interim Report of the Investigations carried out by the Special Investigations Unit of the Health Ministry regarding the expired Blood Kits .This report is hand over to the Secretary yesterday.Investigations are continuing.

Minister Mervyn Surrendered to the courts and released on bail


Sri Lanka's Labour Minister Mervyn Silva Surrendered to the Courts this morning through his lawyers.But later he was released on Bail.Colombo's Additional Magistrate Ordered Rs.50,000 surety and Rs.500,000 Cash Bail for the release of the Minister.Additional Magistrate last Monday ordered Inspector General Of Police to Arrest the Minister and three others in the connection with assaulting of the Sirasa T.V Cameraman recently.
Meanwhile Media Unions Launched a Protest Campaign in front of the Fort Railway Station this noon against the IGP who failed to arrest Minister Silva regarding the assaulting case of the Sirasa T.V Cameraman.

Three other Hospital Blood Banks are under Investigation on Expired Blood Kits



Health Ministry Begun an Investigation on three Provincial Blood Banks which are said to be received the Expired Plasma pherasis and a.pherasis Blood Kits from the National Blood Bank at Narahenpita. Blood Banks at Anuradhapura,Kandy and Kamburugamuwa are under Investigation in this regard Health Ministry Sources revealed. Health Ministry is still Investigating on the expired Plasma Pherasis and A. Pherasis kits found at the National Blood Bank and the Blood Bank of the Colombo National Hospital.These Blood Kits are use to produce Plasmas and removing the Blood Platelets from the Blood .

Susanthika Failed to enter the 200 meters final


Sri Lanka's Sprint Queen Susanthika Jayasinghe failed to enter the finals of the women's 200 meters at Beijing Olympics Today.She clocked 22.98 seconds and finished seventh in the semi finals workout few hours ago.Susanthika won Bronze Medal at the Sydney Olympics in year 2000 for the 200 meters known as her Pet Event.She even skipped in taking part of 100 meters at the Beijing Olympics to concentrate this event.

Five policemen interdicted over the ranjan's assault reinstated their service


Five out of the six policemen who were interdicted over the assaulting of UNP'S Chief Ministerial Candidate for the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council Mr. Ranjan Ramanayaka have been reinstated pending Investigations Police Sources said.

Colombo Magistrate ordered to arrest Minister Mervin and 3 others


Colombo's Additional Magistrate today (18) ordered IGP to arrest the Labour Minister Dr. Mervin Silva and three others immediately in connection with the assaulting of Sirasa Media Crew.Sirasa media crew were assaulted by the minister and his aides when they were covering the opening ceremony of the newly built Kelaniya Bridge recently.

Usain Bolt of Jamaica becomes the fastest man on earth after winning 100 meters Olympic gold on Saturday which he won with a world record time 9.69 seconds at the Beijing Olympics .21 year old Bolt becomes the first Jamaican to win 100 meter gold Medal in Olympics.

Six policemen interdicted over the assaulting case of ranjan ramanayaka


Six policemen were interdicted for mishandling the case of assaulting the opposition united national party's chief ministerial candidate for the Sabaragamuwa provincial council Mr.Ranjan Ramanayaka police sources revealed.Mr.Ramanayaka was assaulted last wednesday at palmadulla while returning from a election rally.he accused that the supporters of the ruling united peoples freedom alliance were responsible for this attack. He and two other unp candidates who were traveling with him sustained injuries and complaint has been lodged regarding this incident with the ratnapura police. around 7 vehicles damaged due to this attack.

police used teargas and iron barriers to disperse university student's march


Police fired tear gas and used iron barriers to disperse the protest rally of over 5000 university students who were trying to march towards temple trees this evening around 5.30 p.m to handover a 100 meter long petition to president Mahinda Rajapaksha. the petition based on 3 demands including the drop the plans to levy fees for courses in state universities . when Police blocked the road to temple trees by using iron barriers student protesters tried to push these barriers guarded by the armed policemen.
How ever finally protesters were dispersed by the police after many on both sides were injured and 8 students were arrested.the inter -university students union organized this protest march.

There are Around fifty government hospitals which are not visited by a single patient daily according to the Ministry of Health in sri lanka.Majority of these are rural hospitals and central dispensaries the ministry saucers said.Although these hospitals are equipped with staff and equipment facilities as that of major hospitals, patients prefer to visit major hospitals located near these small hospitals due to their popularity sources further added.

To day is a Day to celebrate for the Sri Lankan sports crazy fans as sri lankan weight lifter chinthana vidanage tops in his catagory of 69 k.g by lifting a total weight of 293 k.g in the ongoing Beijing Olympic games and sri lankan cricketers beat India in a test match which ended today in Colombo. With this win Sri lankan cricket team clinched the test series over India by 2-1.

Colombo blood bank face an inquiry on expired blood kits


The Sri Lankan Health Authorities are conducting an inquiry to find out whether the blood bank officials of the Colombo national hospital are responsible for keeping expired plasma pherasis and a. Pherasis kits which are used to make plasmas and remove blood platelets from the blood.
The special investigations unit of the ministry of health conducting this investigation.

Prime minister of Nepal Mr.Girija prasad Koirala who was here in sri lanka to attend the recently concluded SAARC summit received a special medical care due to the poor health he is suffering.As he is suffering from breathing problems, oxygen Sylinders sent time to time for his hotel room,To the BMICH where the SAARC Leaders met and to the Parliment where the SAARC leaders were hosted for lunch according to the health ministry sources.
