US Ambassador Says USA Is Deeply Concerned Of The Appointment Of New Army Commander

The US Ambassador in Sri Lanka Alaina Teplitz has said that the United States Of America is deeply concerned of the Appointment of Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva As the allegations of gross human rights violations against him, documented by the United Nations and other organizations, are serious and credible.

“This appointment undermines Sri Lanka’s international reputation and its commitments to promote justice and accountability, especially at a time when the need for reconciliation and social unity is paramount,” the US Embassy in Colombo said.

Major General Shavendre Silva Has Been Appointed As New Army Commander

Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army Major General Shavendra  Silva has been appointed as the 23rd Army Commander of the Sri Lanka Army by President Maithipala Sirisena yesterday (19). 

He succeeds outgoing Army Commander Lineament General  Mahesh Senanayake who had completed his service extension on last Sunday (18) after working as the Commander for more than two years.

The New Army Commander Silva who had been promoted as  Lieutenant  General after appointing as Army Commander , had received his appointment letter yesterday from President at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo .

He had a 35 year old Army career since joining the Army in 1984 .He is an old boy of Saint Thomas Collage Mount Lavinia and received his Military training at Sri Lanka Military Academy  .

CID Had Arrested Two Persons With A Foreign Made Pistol

   Department(CID)Officers had arrested two persons with a Foreign made  Automatic Pistol in their possession at Ampara today (18).
  
  

The Pistol which owneed  by  a businessman in Elpitiya was purchased by the two suspects from a person in Kalmunai area .CID Officers had also arrested the person who sold the Pistol.

The two suspects who are residents of Elpitiya and Kalmunai areas had been remanded until 30 th of August after being produced before the Ampara Acting Magistrate.

Leader Of Leftist JVP Named As Presidential Candidate Of National People's Power

  comprising of 28 Political and Civil Organization's lead by Leftist Janatha Wimukthi Peramuna  (JVP) had today  (18)named JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake as it"s Presidential Candidate of the forthcoming Presidential Elections.

JVP leader had been named officially as the Presidential Candidate of National People's Power during a mass rally held at Galle Face Green in Colombo this Evening .

This was the first time JVP Had named a Presidential candidate after the Presidential Election in 1999 where former JVP MP Nandana Gunathilake was nominated.

Leftist JVP had came forward as a decisive force during 2005 and 2010 Presidential Elections where the party officially supported Forner President Mahinda Rajapakshe and FieldMarshal Sarath Fonseka respectively.
