Common Opposition Candidate Maithripala Sirisena Has Been Elected As The New Sri Lankan President

The Common Opposition Candidate representing the National Democratic Front (NDF) Maithripla Sirisena has received the majority of the votes castes in yesterday's Presidential Elections and elected as the new President of Sri Lanka .According to the results issued so far the Former Health Minister and the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party has been received more then 50% of the votes while the former President Mahinda Rajapaksha has been received around 47% of the votes.

Mr.Sirisena has became  the first Sri Lankan Executive President  elected from the North Central Province.

Voting Of The Seventh Presidential Election Has Been Concluded

The voting of  the seventh Presidential Election has been concluded at 4 p.m this evening and the counting has already began after the receiving of ballot boxes to the  1109 main  counting centers situated  in 44 areas island wide according to the Elections Secretariat .

The voting has been concluded in peaceful manner without reporting a major incident and in  many districts had a 70% to 75% voter turnout the secretariet ha announced.In  few  districts the voter turnout exceeds 80% after many years it has been reported.

According to the Elections Secretariat Voter Turnout of the Districts of Kandy(75%)
,Matale(75%),Galle(79%),Ratnapura(84%),Kegalle(70-75%),Nuwara Eliya(80%),Kalutara(70%),Matara(76%).

The  voters numbering 1,50,44,490 have been eligible to vote in this election where 19 candidates have been contested.The counting of postal votes are taking place in 303 centers island wide.

Voting Of The Seventh Presidential Elections In The Country Commenced

Around 1.5 million Sri Lankan voters are eligible to cast their vote in the Seventh Presidential Elections began 7 a.m today(08) .The voters are to cast their votes at 12,314 polling stations situated throughout the island from 7 a.m to 4 p.m today  the Elections Secretariat has announced.

A total of 1,50,44,490 voters are eligible to cast their votes during this election where 19 candidates including two independent candidates are contesting .Current President  Mahinda Rajapaksha and former Health Minister of this government and former general secretary  of the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party Maithripala Sirisena who is the common presidential candidate of the New Democratic Front formed by main opposition parties in the country are the main contenders in this election.

Around 71,000 Police Personal are deployed at polling stations situated island wide to provide security.

As the current President Mahinda Rajapaksha has requested the elections commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya on 20th of november 2014  to conduct a presidential elections  elections commissioner has called nominations for the elections on 08th of December where 17 political parties and 2 independent groups were handed over nominations of their candidates.

The Postal Voting was conducted late December and last week for the public sector employees who were applied for postal votes.

According to the Elections Secretariat the first elections result is due to be released early tomorrow(09) and the final result by tomorrow evening.

The Elections Commissioner has decided to stop counting the votes of those polling stations facing threats of groups and politicians with immediate effect.

Fifty Five member International Political Observers Panel is currently also here to monitor this presidential Elections.

Maldives To Handover The Sri Lankan Prisoners In Custody To Sri Lanka

The Government of Maldives has decided to handover all 15 Sri Lankan Nationals currently serving in prison sentences in Maldives to Sri Lankan Government the Foreign Ministry has announced.These prisoners are due to handover as a goodwill gesture the Ministry has said.

Fifty Five International Political Observers Began Their Observations Prior To The Presidential Elections

The 55 member International Political Observers Panel has commenced their island wide observations  today(06) from Northern Province.The Panel members have visited Northern Province this morning and meet government agents there to get an idea of the situation in the area prior to the Presidential Elections scheduled to be held on this Thursday(08).

These Political Observers are due to present at the polling booths as well during this Thursday's elections.Around 15 million people eligible to vote in this election.
