Non Communicable Diseases Amongst Sri Lankans Are In Increase Due To Bad Food Habits

The Non Communicable Diseases including Diabetes,High Blood Pressure and Stroke are in increase amongst Sri Lankans due to the higher daily  consumption of  Salt,Sugar and Oil  The head of the Nutrition Unit in Medical Research Institute Dr.Renuka Jayathissa has said today(27). According to Dr.Jayathissa the daily consumption of Salt,Sugar and Oil of Sri Lankans are  more than two times higher then the quantity required .

An average Sri Lankan consumed 10.8 -11 Grammes of Salt daily as the required quantity is around 5 Grammes and the quantity of Sugar and Oil are in the same status she has stressed."Now the comes to introduce low salt,sugar and oily Food Recipes to the public to avoid the spreading of non communicable diseases "Dr.Jayathissa further said.


Public should have use alternative ways when preparing meals like using Baking Method instead of frying food items with oil .She stressed.Dr.Jayathissa has expressed these views at the Media Seminar held today on "Healthy Living Style by reducing Salt and Sugar intake" held at Health Education Bureau today.

Former Test Skipper Mahela Reached The 10,000 th Run In Test Cricket

Former Sri Lankan Skipper Mahela Jayawardena has today (26)became the first Sri Lankan Cricketer to score 10,000 Runs in Test Match Cricket as he reached the milestone during the first day's play in second Test Match against South Africa currently been played in Durban,South Africa.Mahela is the 9th Cricketer of the world who has reached this milestone.He was out after scoring 31 runs today as his Test Cricket Runs stands as 10,030.

He has already surpassed the 10,000 run mark in One Day Internationals(ODI)

Met Department Warned Jaffna Fishermen To Refrain From Fishing Due To A Cyclonic Condition

The Department Of Meteorology has warned the Fishermen reside in Eastern Jaffna to refrain from fishing in the seas Northern and Eastern Seas from  Mannar to Batticloe as the low pressure built in Bay Of Bengal is  developed in to a Cyclone.According to the Meteorologists a cyclonic condition is developing in 750 Kilo Meters east of Jaffna.

During last few weeks Seas in North to Southern Sri Lanka have experienced rough waves and gusty winds due to the low pressure area developed in Bay Of Bengal.

Met Department Urging Fishermen To Refrain From Going To Sea Due To Depression

The Meteorology Department has urging  Sri Lankan Fishermen to refrain from going to seas from Mannar to Hambantota due to the depression build in Bay of Bengal.The low pressure that seen there in last few days now developed to a depression according to Department Sources.

Due to the Depression build in heavy rains and strong winds as well as rough seas are forecast from the areas of Mannar,Jaffna,Batticloe and Hamabanthota the Met Department has stated.

Government Hospital Nurses To Launch An Island Wide Strike From 15th Of January

The largest Nurses Trade Union Public Services Nurses Union (PSNU) has threatened to launch an Island Wide Strike of Government Hospital Nurses from 15th of January 2012 if the Health Ministry has failed to give permanent solutions for 11 of their service demands according to the Union President Ven.Muruththettuwe Ananda Thero.

The Demands including the implementation of delayed Nurses Constitution,Increase the Uniform Allowance and implementing the Nursing Degree Course are even acceptable as reasonable demands by the Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena Ven.Ananda Thero said.

The Executive Committee of the PSNU met recently unanimously decided to go for an island wide strike if the authorities failed to give prompt solutions  for nurses demands he further added

Thirteen Suspects Arrested For "Sirikotha" Attack Released On Bail

Thirteen United National Party (UNP) supporters  who were remanded till 02nd of January in connection of  damaging the properties of UNP Headquarters at "Sirikotha" on last monday were released today (22)on  bail by Nugegoda Magistrate.

The accused who were released today included UNP Provincial Council Members Maithri Gunaratne and Srilal Lakthilake.

Three UNP Provincial Councillors And Seven Others Arrested Over Yesterday's Protest

Three Provincial Council members  and seven others belongs to main opposition United National Party(UNP)were arrested by Police today(20) in connection with damaging the properties of UNP headquarters in Colombo and remanded them till 02nd of January 2012.

The three Provincial Councillors arrested are Maithree Gunaratne,Srilala Lakthilake and Ravi Jayawardena._
